The Irish-born former Sydney Swans star was relatively quiet but Albury co-coach Daniel Maher said he expected Kennelly to improve after his first hitout.

"We said to Tadhg that we didn't expect him to get 50 touches or take six bounces up the wing, we just want him to play a role at halfback.

"He was serviceable and he's only going to get better as the weeks progress."

Buchanan to retire

Buchanan, 29, informed his teammates of his decision earlier this month and was honoured at tonight’s Club Champion dinner.

He will continue to play with the Lions Reserves as an integral part of the team that will campaign towards the 2012 NEAFL premiership, before hanging up the boots at the end of the season.
