And to think we could've had Rioli, Harry Taylor or Scott Selwood!! The 2007 draft though, arguably is the weakest one since the draft came into play. Apart from Kruezer, Cotchin, Dangerfield, Taylor, Rioli and McEvoy, there aren't really any others who come close. Couple like Grimes and Masten are getting better but a terrible draft!

The 2004 draft has got to be the worst. Franklin, Roughhead, Deludio and Griffin the rest is just shithouse.

I agree about the 2007 draft not being strong, but we've had worse first round picks than Veszpremi. Our past 10 years of 1st round picks has been embarassing beyond Melbourne or Richmond level

Back it up
If you insist. Posted the below a few months ago

I see our first round picks are up for discussion again... here's the summary, not including traded picks

2003 - Josh Willoughby (0 games)
2004 - N/A (traded for Darren Jolly - 118 games)
2005 - N/A (traded for Ted Richards - 139 games)
2006 - Daniel O'Keefe (0 games)
2007 - Patrick Veszpremi (11 games)
2008 - Lewis Johnston (2 games)
2009 - Gary Rohan (22 games)
2010 - Jed Lamb (0 games)
2011 - Tom Mitchell (0 games)

Bolded names still on our list. Can we please, pretty please, trade our pick?

You obviously have a finger missing.

And Jetta was pick 14 after Rohan and still a 1st round draft pick!!!
I said not included traded picks. If you want to go back another year it was McVeigh in 2002 which rescues things slightly, but he was a top 5 pick. 2001 we traded our pick again

I get your point but it all has to be put into the right context or perspective rather than just 1st round draft pick imo. Overall we have picked and traded well and the general consensus from other teams, supporters and media is that we do it extremely well. Yep, we've recruited some duds but name a team that hasn't.

I think, people may disagree, our 1st round picks werent given a chance to prove what they have got. I'm a firm believer in that all players should be given a shot, you could uncover a gem. Instead of playing Spriggs who spudded it up, we could've played Josh Willoughby for a game or two. Still believe Rohan, Lamb and Mitchell are dependant on injuries, they could all be stars or duds, depending on injuries.

Willoghby had 3 years on our list and I never recall anyone suggesting he was ready for a call up, and in all the years since he's not threatend an AFL recall. The same used to be said of Daniel O'Keefe, give him a chance, he's injured. He never did enough in the chances in the lower leagues to demand a place.

I take your point about giving Spriggs chances but the young players don't get picked because there talented, they need to demand a spot in the team like Hanners did in the two's and Johnson did in the pre season. Those options were available to josh and O'Keefe and both failed to take them.

Dan Currie's North Adelaide went to West Adelaide in the SANFL prelim yesterday. Currie had 14 touches and 35 hitouts and added a goal while Lewis Johnston was a late withdrawal with illness. West Adelaide will play Norwood next week in the granny
