no one is willing to name a forward line with both King and Nahas in it. The deisre to squeeze an third tall (and/or Edwards) in seems to leave no room for both in the same team. Im not agreeing or disagreeing - but the coaching panel seem very fond of the difficulty on matching up on both of them simultaenously presents and the defensive pressure they have shown such a hunger to provide, so I find it hard to believe that when fit, both of them wont be there. An extra tall or big may also leave the forward line a little slow around the packs.

I think 1 of those smalls gets replaced by a resting mid.

HF. Martin Vickery S. Edwards
F. Nahas Riewoldt Conca
Gotta say - like him, or not, McGuane is doing everything right to be rewarded with a game in round one.
Has clearly outperformed A. Edwards to date .... and Edwards is the one who needs to be impressing Hardwick more!
He already knows what Lukey can and can't do!

Like Dimma said in the press conference yesterday, Luke needs to work on his finishing, but his work ethic and competitiveness are there. He is doing the job of third tall pretty well and will stay there until someone else surpasses him.

After the last game and the more I think about, I would like to see Newman play forward a lot. We need a smart player that kicks the ball well and also has a defensive aspect to thier game, reckon he would be a nightmare match up for opposition coaches and could also get on the end of easy goals by being able to read the play so well.

5-man forward line with 7 in the back.

Jackson (yes, it was hard to type that), Vickery, Edwards
King, Riewoldt, <no-one>

But the days of a set in stone lineup are long gone.

I expect to see Cotchin and Martin rotated through FF, and I would not be surprised to see McGuane on the bench but play forward when Vickery swings to the centre bounces and Maric gets a rest.

Why Why Why must we try ro turn just about every player thats shows something into a backman !!

Shifter mentioned pre draft that Big Ben Griffiths could be the next Tony Lockett - Yet we want him to become a Defender

i say Dimma picks a game at some point during the season where he'd like to rest Jack, and play Griffiths at FF/CHF for the full match.

also from what ive seen from A Edwards hes a long way off playing Rounds 1-5. Didnt assert himself at all during the NAB.

I posted this in the vs Carlton thread. I'd still be going with the 5 forward setup (brackets for the interchangeable mid / smalls) - x is the position:

Vickery x

X King/Edwards/Nahas/Resting Mid King/Edwards/Nahas/Resting Mid x

Riewoldt x

McGuane x

Vickery: Roam CHF. The entire arc across between distances of 45-55 metres out from goal. He can kick 50 easy and generally accurate. He can also spot up a kick inside the 50. (Ideally I would like Griffiths to play this role).

Reiwoldt: Roam central 50 from 20 metres to 40 metres out from goal. Do not lead too far into pockets. We all know he is a great mark and kick but you have to remember he is extremely clever at setting up players. He is not our number one assist man for nothing. With Mid / Edwards / King / Nahas all going to be forward at some stage he will no doubt setup some handball goals.

McG: Roam deep pockets, goal square and lead up maximum of 20 metres out. Reasons for this are he is not a great kick at goal, the closer the better. His strengths are also his marking and bringing the ball to ground to Nahas and the small brigade to finish the work.

Whoever are playing small- medium forwards (Nahas /Edwards / King/ Mid) need to lead the opposite direction to the bigger guys to not get in there way - or even just drag their men out to the boundary lines on 50 to create space for the bigger guys to lead into from McGuanes area to the top of Riewoldts area. This also allows them to be in good positions to crumb if a big boy goes up in a pack and get the forward pressure going to lock it in / defend rebounds.

Reiwoldt and Vickerys roles are almost Interchangable.

This sort of setup will stop players leading for the same ball like we have seen sometimes this preseason and I think declutter the F50 creating more space.

The only problem with that is how many times has griff actually taken intercept marks? Pretty rare if i remember say compared to rance. He nearly takes marks alot and still needs to clunk these before we are convinced he can take that CHF role.

That is exactly right imo. Will make a good key back, but gee what he could do as a forward..
Yeah im nearly of the opinion to let him chase around the top quality forwards and learn a thing or two. Then when the fitness and body are top notch unleash him into the forward line

I wanted him as a CHF, I really did.

But then I saw him kicking out from full back. With the advantage of the goal square, plus how far he can kick it, even if the opposition do mark it they will be marking it close to the wing. I think this is a huge advantage to us.

Maybe he can play CHF but take all the kickouts from FB :)

I like your idea. To give some solace to the anti-McGuane crowd I would say that the McGuane role could also be played by up to half a dozen other players, including Astbury and A. Edwards.

The downside of this is there will be an opponent either filling the hole for Riewoldt to lead into, or double teaming Riewoldt. After all, they will have a spare man there.

I expect us to have midfielders bombing it from 50 a lot this year too. We'll kick a lot of points but that is the trade off if we have 7 in the backline.
