Would love to see a side take this piss and run the ball out against GWS if they were 150 points up.
If Neesham was still coach he would have used this already to break through the Fwd Press. And every other club would be using this as the latest rebounding technique... ;)

Truth be told - Neesham's strategy of running the ball and drawing the man would be relatviley successful at breaking through the zone.

Teams would just need the clean disposal to make it work

Coming from a basketball coaching background, we over load one side of the court to make it a 4 on 3 contest. In other terms we pick gaps in the zone and outnumber the opposition.

My thought would be start everybody in the middle and kick it long to a spot and then number the opposition. High risk approach and as we have numbers at the ball the odds are stacked in our favor.

Then have our two quickest players level the last defensive line.

Another idea is screen and block the zone or get the kick outer to fake one way and kick the opposition which shifts the zone.

i got the impression on Sunday Lyon was welcoming the Eagles forward press to see who stood up and absorbed the pressure.

i don't believe he was trying to break the press because
- he removed all forward targets
- left Mayne with 3 - 4 opponents ensuring WC reload
- Suban and Duffield (who we know in match simulation are the designated kickers) did not take any kick ins
- positioned Clarke beside Sandi and kicked there every time

Lyon knows how to deal with it but not in round 1 of the NAB cup.

And changed only 3 players and challenged fatigued players to run and break the lines if possible.
But the main one was Hurn was left to his own devices to bring the ball back in...time and time again.
afl08??? You seeing this? :)

High risk strategy...but I like the precision kick out with players down the ground holding their position. i.e. if you nail the first kick to just on or before the 50m line, then that player can bomb long to an open player on the wing.

It basically just shits me that we don't play positions anymore and it turns into everyone chase the ball around in a big 36 man elongated group.

There always seems to be space around the 30m to 50m mark down the centre of the ground. Obviously an extremely difficult kick to execute over the head of the player at the 20m mark without telegraphing your intentions.

Just seems an underutilized kick out option.

I am and I don't like having my time wasted watching a game that the coaching staff had no intention of winning. That just pisses me off even more in all honesty.

Give Suban the option for the Torp if there is nothing on...

That reminds me...
Tarrant was good with the long kick out of the defensive 50. He won us that NAB cup game against Norf in 2010 with seconds remaining with a huge kick over the top onto our runners...

It was a practice match. Your sulking about the quality of the play is way out of proportion.

So you're perfectly happy with us being flogged by West Coast then?

What happened to preparing for Round 1 but going out to actually try and win?

Your still here?

It's an NAB cup game. I love the fact that our coaching panel used it the way they did. WCE won't know what hit them in the regular season.

Of course I am and last I checked it was a free place to post
unless you're persona non grata which I am and doubt will ever change
That second game really knocked me down as a supporter

Who knows what'll happen in the regular season but I'd be expecting 2 wins against West Coast for sure. 1 win and I'd be alright but 2 losses and I'll probably end up going into a meltdown.

Maybe i'm the only one seeing this but when we were applying the forward press we allowed the opposition forwards to roam by themselves and could not get back in time to stop them from marking in their forward 50. This happened in both games and I noticed this in our scratch match too.

Did anyone else notice this. I thought our backline pushed up too much.

I don't think this is just the case of key players missing out but it is the actual structure of our forward press.

For Christ's sake - what 'knocked me down as a supporter' in 2011 was being uncompetitive for the last 8 games, the coach knowingly playing injured players, and seeing absolutely no evidence of a game plan throughout the year. The first round of the 2012 NAB Cup is already an improvement on last year.

And why would you 'expect' 2 wins against the Eagles, a semi-finalist in 2011? I don't think any other club would have such expectations.

Back on topic mouth breathers... please don't derail a perfectly topical thread in this long offseason.

Now that I have thought about the kick out plan in depth. I would want to see some variation.

I don't want to be able to know what we are going to do as a fan. If that is the case, there's a chance our opposition will know what we are going to do.

We should have practiced 6-7 different ways of bringing the ball out of the back line and vary it up and make it unpredictable.

I watched Hawthorn in the NAB set up with the huddle and everyone spread while a player from the centre square ran into the open space about 40m from goal and it was a simple kick over with an option to kick left and right. Birchall was also fantastic with his ovelapping runs from the back pockets and this is where Broughton should be used occasionally.

Classic! Imagine running up the field in V formation

No reason why it wouldn't work. What is the problem with left field tactics?

But I would prefer a Neesham style run and gun, with slick hand-balling over the top.

But I don't think that our skill set is quite there yet.

And changed only 3 players and challenged fatigued players to run and break the lines if possible.

/;;OMFG!!!!!!!!!

There was a tactical, forward thinking coach in the box???

Surely you are shitting us all!

Yeah, went too far but really, your boohoo response was ****ing pathetic.

Please ensure that your parents remove all sharp instruments, and anything that resembles rope from the home, before you next watch a pre-season game.

I admire your passion. However, I do seriously question your knowledge of the game.

I really do.

That Wirrapunda fella used to drop a few nice 65-70 metre torps into the centre square on Big Cox's head to break things up a bit.

No reason for us to not do the same.

Bring back the torp!!

That knocked me down too but I knew injuries would take a toll. Once they did I was resigned to the losses

Why do I expect 2 wins against the Eagles?

It's simple!

Higher expectations or is that a concept people aren't familiar with

Seems like everyone's happy with the opening round of the NAB Cup and good luck to them.

All I'm saying is that I thought the second match was shit to watch and I've got everyone jumping down my throat for it. Is it really that bad to expect better? Apparantly so

I just don't understand Ross Lyon in all honesty. I was looking for some sort of understanding as to what he might play and really, I left more confused than ever. Well actually, I switched off in disgust with 2 minutes left of the West Coast game as I'd had enough of the shit not to mention I had a phone call at that time which was more interesting than losing my cool at home.

Now that I understand that we never really intended to win that West Coast game, I just feel like I wasted my time watching it, that's all I'm simply getting at.

You dont understand Ross after 2 half games? geez I thought you were alot better than that.

What I am relieved about is that finally, you realize that we did not intend to win the WC game.

He's not going to take out a membership until Saturn is aligned with Mars in the night sky, no one named Steve is at the club (this includes Hill) and he has exactly $2^(e^pi) in his bank account, but boy, if Ross Lyon ever takes a 40 minute NAB cup game not very seriously again, he'll spew.
