The furphy that Melbourne has poor crowds

There is nothing sadder than seeing a Melbourne crowd in a home game vs an interstate side. It reminds me of a Sheffield Shield game from the 90's.

Half of them leaving during the third quarter didn't help either.
Saints v Freo
Crowd: 20,522

Melb v Freo
Crowd: 25,202

What is stopping the AFL from moving Melbourne to Docklands? The actual stadium in the city, that is the perfect size for a club like melbourne
Because it's our home ground.
Melbourne have a long lasting relationship with the MCC in which a significant number of our members are MCC members. On top of that , the MCG has been our home ground for 150+ years.
We're not going anywhere,
That being said, we already have 2 home games that aren't being played at the MCG, so there is already a medium ground to what you want.

Also, just saying, up until the last 2 years (the last 2 years being a massive bandwagon effect and an outlier you could say) , Collingwood had pretty consistently got between 20-35k against Interstate clubs yet not once would you have talked about taking them away from the MCG then.

My point related to the size of the ground the game was played at.

It looks like a Sheffield Shield crowd, even with more people there.
Thats..... That's the point of this thread though, it's pointing out the hypocrisy in which Melbourne cop it way more than any other club, when in reality the numbers are on par with the size of the club and the numbers are okay.

Nobody batted an eyelid when St. kilda got 20k on Friday night, or when Geelong got 25k against Freo, or when Essendon got 25k against Port, or when Richmond got 18k against Gold Coast etc.
Even in the last decade, all the big 4 clubs have had multiple sub 25k home crowds.
But when Melbourne just play anyone really, we cop it no matter what.

It does come down to our supporters sitting behind the camera on the MCC side, and the big stadium. But the MCG is our home ground and we're not going anywhere, so idk, maybe they should move the camera sor something lol

The afl have shown that “home game” just means a game in your own state.

Melbournes relationship with the mcc should be completely irrelevant to the afls fixture.

Most teams have changed home grounds in the past so it’s really not a big deal.

Excluding covid we’ve only dropped below 50k home crowd average once in the past 20 years, so that’s a pretty bad argument. Melbourne have been in the 20s most of those years, which is far far far better suited to docklands.

Even Carlton and Essendon have moved home games to Docklands.

Melbourne are unique in their delusion and would rather play on a ground that looks empty when broadcast (if only they could just turn the camera around lol).

I gave you reasons as to why we play at the MCG and not docklands, and you've pretty much ignored all of them. The relationship with the MCC is very relevant whether you like it or not.

We do have home games played away from the MCG , so there's your medium ground for that.

I never said Collingwood should be taken away from the MCG, because I think they shouldn't. "Pretty bad argument" - I'm not even arguing that Collingwood should be moved from the MCG. I'm just pointing out how you would've never considered to move Collingwood away from the MCG that when Collingwood very consistently got 20-35k against Interstate clubs.

I think clubs should be able to play the majority of their home games at the home ground they choose to, but idk if you're against that then we'll agree to disagree.
Maybe we could play more games against Interstate clubs at docklands, but your initial argument is to take us away from the MCG and break that MCC relationship completely. I think that's a bit shit from you tbh.

This kinda reminds me of when people get shitty about Geelong playing at GMHBA, it's really weird actually.

In an ideal set up, all Melbourne based clubs should be sharing both the MCG & Docklands. Melbourne should move matches against low drawing interstate teams, like GWS/Suns etc, to Docklands. Same for other MCG tenants. And then give North, Bulldogs, Saints some more matches at the MCG against other Vic teams.

I agree with this to an extent. But some people here are arguing that we should be taken away from the MCG and MCC completely

I don't think that, despite what I've said in this thread.

St Kilda gets one home game at the MCG a year against a big side. We have to practically beg the AFL for that.

So when I see Melbourne vs GC getting 25k or whatever, it really annoys me. It's like a waste of the MCG.

Well that's another reason why this thread is here, when another club like any of the big 4 gets 25k or so at the MCG against Interstate opposition (which has happened a lot in the last decade, I can pull the stats out if you want) no one seems to care but when Melbourne do it's a massive issue. I guess we would get smaller crowds more often, but we're smaller club than them so it makes sense.

On the other other hand as well, the interstate clubs also want to play more games at the MCG as well. Partly because the grand final and a lot of finals are played there.

Take GWS as an example , they've averaged 30k at the MCG (I've taken Melbourne out of the equation to make a point that it's not just us struggling to draw against them). You could argue that all those games should've been at Docklands as 30k is perfect for Docklands. But then how's that fair on GWS?

There's no winning here really

So the Giants who average two games in the MCG a season play there even less??? I thought the Giants wanted to play there more regularly, even considering selling a home game to play in front of the G

Because Docklands is your home ground and the MCG is our home ground. Makes perfect sense.

So what happens when you play GC at the MCG and you get 25,000?

Doesn't help that the AFL fixture us to play all the low drawing interstate sides at home every year even when we were a top 4 side.
Yeah that sorta draw MUST be tough? Played the Suns 4 times at the G in 15 years, We ALWAYS play Brissy in Brissy, Swans at the SCG (this year we got a home game against em....in Adelaide!) and Freo and WC either in WA or at Marvel.
I'd love it if the AFL fixtured us to play the lowly interstate teams at home even once every couple of years!
