In the old days, the Inside Football magazine used to come out every Wednesday during the football season with news not just from the then VFL, but also the SANFL, WAFL, country and metropolitan football leagues around Australia.

But now, it comes out every month.

Seeing that we get our football news and every day on the internet, is Inside Football's days numbered?

Could Inside Football go back to weekly editions for its digital versions,as opposed to the print edition?

There is so much media coverage of the game now that a specialist weekly footy paper just isn’t necessary for most people.
I love my footy to the point of obsessiveness according to some people, but there is still a saturation point which kicks in well before buying IF on a regular basis.
In fact, the only issues I have bought in recent years were after Hawks flags, and tbh I was disappointed in the quality in terms of both presentstion and content.

Inside Footy has done well to nearly last for 50 years - It's always been a good standard publication - Hat's off to their contribution to footy.

Been outdated for years. AFL.com has made it redundant and that’s not even that good. They still have dinosaurs on the payroll.

Their draft special for instance is a complete waste of money. For 150+ players they do a short grab from their junior coach, who of course all say the same positive things. Where’s the analysis?

Would be sad to see it go. Pre-internet it was a weekly buy for me and the draft editions in particular were much anticipated. These days though, BF is enough for me - gives me lots of info, has training watchers, links me to media stories and the draft watchers provide far more info and insight on potential draftees. The shifting tides.

Never forgot when in the pre-national competition days, Inside Football in 1975 would herald the coming to Victoria on the front page of a big name from WA like Mike Fitzpatrick who came to Carlton from WA club Subiaco, or the arrival of 'Fabulous' Phil Carman from SANFL club Norwood to Collingwood.

I lived in northern NSW as a kid for a time and Inside Football was great for a footy starved kid in the late 80s. It seems a bit redundant now with the internet and saturation coverage unfortunately.

I also congratulate them. As a South Aussie I appreciated the coverage pre-internet days and the articles. Had to scramble to find it in NSW but golden when I did

But its time has come

The problem for Inside Football is because it's published on Wednesdays, it usually misses out on the biggest football stories of the week, and sometimes the year.

Case in point was in 2010 where Jason Akermanis was given his marching orders by the Western Bulldogs after revealing in-club information to Sam Newman, and also losing the trust of the players after leaks from his yet-to-be-published autobiographies came out, with suggestions he slammed the attitude of the playing group towards him, including then captain Brad Johnston. On that same day, Inside Football was published thus missing out on the biggest football story of 2010.

Yep, officially confirmed in the Herald Sun that it's done. Had a great run but it's peak period was decades ago so did well to last as long as it did.

Will have fond memories of the magazine; actually won a year's subscription through a comp on Brian Taylor's radio show (on the then 3UZ) to celebrate its 25th anniversary in 1996. It even came with a cassette tape Inside Football song by Greg Champion!

Can't find the story on the Herald Sun website.

How many of the players that has won Inside Football's Player of The Year Award gone on to win the Brownlow Medal?

Nine players, with Robert Harvey achieving it twice.
Gary Dempsey (1975), Kelvin Templeton (1980), John Platten (1987), Paul Couch (1989), Jim Stynes (1991), Greg Williams (1994), Robert Harvey (1997 and 1998), Shane Crawford (1999), Jason Akermanis (2001).

I was listening to the Test cricket via SEN and they played an ad for the latest (last) Inside Football!

You’d think SEN would be smarter than still running ads for a now defunct publication.
