The Future

I was doing a bit of thinking in the lead up to the Shanghai Showdown about how Cam Schwabb talked about many of this group spending the "next 10 years together"

Ultimately which of our current players do you think will be integral in our long term future ( 27 or under so Davey, etc not counted) and those who ultimately you don't see in the team

Integral (top 10 in order):
Watts (if he comes on as expected), Scully, Sylvia, Frawley, Trengove, Jurrah, Grimes, Fitzpatrick (if develops as well as he could), Rivers and McKensie

May not make it:
Dunn, Morton, Spencer, Aussie, Blease, Strauss

Don't see a future:
Bate, Maric, Jetta, PJ, Martin

thoughts??

Jones could potentially be a 200 + games player for the club...or he could quickly wind up on the outer. All depends on the development of himself and of our midfield.

I think you're right about the may not make it group, but I would love to see Morton step up next year. I think I would put Bartram in the may not make it bracket too, sure he had a good year but ultimately its the sort of position that has the possibility to be filled by a better player (I still love you Clint xx )

Cool thread idea, but it will no doubt come back to haunt many of us in the coming years haha

yes, players like Jones and Tapscott who i have left out, i think will make it (and moloney) but won't end up being an integral part of our team in 5 + years, moloney probably being due to age

but we will see

BP passed up a lot of talented players last year when he went for Gysberts at pick 11, I'd be surprised if he didn't come on given the reasons he was picked. The hard ball will always be important and he briefly showed what he can do when given the chance.

Morton might not make it? zero credability in this thread.

Fitzpatrick is an interesting one, very exciting but very raw at the same time. If you're going to put Morton in the 'might not make it' pile, I don't see how Fitzpatrick belongs anywhere else but there.

To me, Morton is almost a definite to make it. It's easy to forget how young he still is, and further to that, last year was interrupted for him as a result injury. I would probably place him in the integral category if anywhere.

Bate doesn't belong in the 'don't see a future' pile either in my view. Surely the work he has done over the past few years outweighs one bad year? Moreover, he plays best when we move the ball quickly, and as our players improve/execute their skills better, that will form a massive part of our gameplan. As such, I can see him flourishing in the future, so long as he can stay injury free (probably the worst player I've ever seen in terms of playing with injury).

Aside from that, it's hard to argue with much of what you've got there. I mean, you could probably mount a case to move a few players around a bit (e.g. Garland integral instead of Rivers), but really, it's not a bad assessment at this point in time.

Does Bate remind anyone of Ling. Both have played their early careers in the forward line. Both incredibly slow but both very penetrating kicks. Both have the reddest hair on the planet.

Would it be at all possible for Bate to develop in the mould of Ling in the midfield?

Just on how you've got Watts at the top of the list there. Of all the player I could choose on our list to be our best player in the next five years it would be Watt no doubt. He's just such a talent, and for a KPF of his size to play to his potential would make us a truly dominant size, especially considering our midfield and the support around Watts (Jurrah, Petterd, Dunn).

From that list the ones I can see as being out and out stars are Watts, Sylvia, Frawley, Grimes and Scully. That's definitely quite a few, and I can see Jurrah, Trengove and Morton being in the bracket just below. Throw in McKenzie, Garland, etc and that's half of our team being very good.

morton showed no improvement this year arguably he went backwards, maybe i am being harsh because i expected more

so therefore i am unsure if he will continue to improve see??

he isn't in our best 22 on this years form

If Fitz develops as he should, he will become an integral part of our team IMO, it was a speculative pick however by me

In regard to bate, i just think we have an abundance of medium style forwards, he is good enough to make it, but atm Jurrah, Green, Pettard, Dunn are in front of him and hopefully tapscott will make it with Sylvia also potentially moving through the forwardline, so unless he improves dramatically im not sure how he will make it at melbourne

Dunn is definitely talented enough to play without a role. Fell in love with him this year, especially against Essendon and North.

Morton was flying until he got injured.

Great endurance - don't think you can write a player off just after one season where injuries were a big factor.

dunno why bumped threads are funny. At the current time those players look rather accurate. In 2 years the people who aren't currently pulling their finger out they may in fact do that.
