The 'Gabba (Brisbane Cricket Ground)

Are they replacing some of the seats as part of the upgrade? In some areas of the ground (mainly on the top deck) there's areas of missing seating, the newest area is 2 bays worth of missing seats on the top deck of the Southern Wing near the interchange benches towards the back of the stand. Meanwhile Bay 13 on level 1, which was missing seats for a period of time before getting new seats recently appears to be occupied by patrons for the first time since the BBL

Looks like there is a seat replacement project taking place. I’ve noticed several bays have had newer style seats this season.

Also, I reckon a few of the old seats have found their way up to Cazaly’s stadium (like the old grandstand).

Looks as if the Gabba redevelopment officially opens tonight with new entrances and media facilities. Also appears to be new permanent LED sponsor signage boards

Cazaly always has the same style seating

Does anyone know why they haven’t filled the crowd at the top here? If it’s because of COVID, well they are okay to pack the first level!

They need to offer the mcg guy all the money. The surface has never looked as good. Normally it’s patchy. Now it just looks like velvet carpet. It was jarring for the 2 semis I went to.

Four years!?

Are they building it with a pick and shovel?

Optus took about 3 years to build and that was pretty much a greenfields Site. The Gabba has to be demolished in a built up area so that will take a while. Subiaco oval took close to a year to demolish and rehabilitate - it did have asbestos though…

Talks are apparently underway for The Exhibition Ground to replace The Gabba while it's rebuilt
Article from Fox Sports;
Talks are underway about the potential construction of a 20,000-seat stadium inside the Brisbane Showgrounds that could host Lions games for up to four years, reports The Courier-Mail.
Brisbane will require a temporary new home ground for the 2026 season onwards, as the Gabba undergoes a $1 billion redevelopment in time for the 2032 Olympics.
Chief executive of the RNA, who own the Showgrounds and put on the Royal Queensland Show (or Ekka), Brendan Christou said discussions had begun with Stadiums Queensland and the Lions.

It could see a 20,000 seat boutique venue built at the existing Main Arena, hosting AFL games and potentially Big Bash cricket matches as well.
“Obviously it’s a decision for the state government but we would love to have the opportunity,” Christou said.
“There are heritage grandstands which are part of the charm and will have to remain or (be) built around, but from our perspective it’s all about the legacy.
“The Cross River Rail station is nearby and the King St precinct can provide food and beverages for the before and after experience.”

The Showgrounds venue has hosted a VFL match before, between Essendon and Geelong in 1952. John Coleman kicked 13 goals as the Cats suffered one of just two losses on route to the premiership.
The Lions are supportive of the plan, given it has public transport links and will be an investment in a venue for future sporting events.
The venue will already be upgraded to host Olympic equestrian events in 2032.
“The Exhibition Ground ticks those boxes,” Brisbane GM of infrastructure Jake Anson said.
“It has hosted Australian football for more than 100 years.”
It would also allow the Lions to play in their home city, rather than relocate games to Gold Coast’s Metricon Stadium - one of three plans mooted last month, along with the Lions’ soon-to-be-completed Brighton Homes Arena at their Springfield training base, which will have a capacity of a bit over 10,000.
“Plans indicate that an AFL-level oval can be accommodated there (the Exhibition Ground),” Anson said.
“Lions fans want to see us play in Brisbane.
“Brisbane must continue to stage sports events leading into the Olympic Games.”

Every big stadium in Australia is a government project on a unionised site.
That is correct! Then throw in the more recent dribble the government departments and are throwing in it’s guaranteed to cost double or triple the amount and take 3 times longer
Hiring people based in diversity over skill sets and experience never works like leftism as history shows

That explains all the blowouts here in NSW. Those damn Libs, kowtowing to leftist woke snowflake SJWs (did I do that right? Miss any of the latest greatest hits of trivialization?)

How much experience do you have of these sites to be able to make such sweeping declarations about their management and hiring practices?
Don't trivialise that Facebook post he read!!!

There are reports of the redevelopment potentially being abandoned partially via cost neutrality (big redevelopment for just 8000 extra seats), partially because of the school behind the left of screen where construction would at the very least cause 300 students to move into schools where there isn't any room within catchment areas to accommodate (and politically speaking a school is a bigger vote winner than a stadium development), and partially because The Greens (who have a strangehold on the area politically, both state and federal members in that area are Greens) are kicking up a stink to the extent where they're threatening to use Federal Senate numbers to block key legislation as a revenge measure.

there is no chance in my opinion of that happening, the rebuild will happen, its part of commitment to the IOC

The Greens are such a cancer.

But yeah, no chance of this happening. The Gabba is the most outdated major football/cricket venue in the country, and Olympics or no Olympics, the venue will need to be upgraded soon.
