Ponting one of the best I've ever seen - can field pretty much anywhere.

This is why I would go Ponting. As good as Rhodes fielding close imo and then when you consider he was good in the slips and even took some beauties in the deep, can't really go past him. I think when he piled on the runs and became captain people forgot about just what a freak of a fielder he was at the start of his career, always worth watching some of the youtube vids of his work.

no mention of Steve Waugh in this thread, he was brilliant around cover for Australia during his younger days - Jonty Rhodes was great, but rarely hit the stumps earlier in his career, would create plenty of opportunities for run outs but couldn't knock down the sticks (he did improve in this area - and he was always brilliant at diving and saving runs).

Mark Waugh overall better than Steve as a fielder, but as I said, Steve was very very good early on.

Dean Jones ran himself ragged in the outfield too, plenty of energy.
AB was deadly at mid-wicket and very solid at 2nd slip.

Agree with an earlier poster about Roger Harper, as early in his career he was amazing. Cat-like, and I'm talking something like a puma, with real power to go with the smooth moves.

Derek Randal was exceptional in the covers. And David Gower before he wrecked his shoulder was an unbelievable fielder.

Those Symonds clips bring back memories. Forgot how good he was.

Growing up, I'd have to say Mark Waugh. Could always rely on him to take what most people would have put down. Ponting for sure at throwing the stumps down, didn't get to see much AB unfortunately. These days would have to be Warner I guess. For such a small, stocky bloke, he covers the ground pretty well and has great hand eye coordination. Not very often you will see him fumble it.

Can still remember from what I saw of Rhodes, he was a gun. I'll never forget this clip. Probably more crazy than skilful though.

What the hell happened to Harper at the end of his career? That is the only time I seen him play and his fielding was actually very ordinary.

It's one of the great mysteries. Harper was so good, he won a MOM in a one-dayer in England - purely for his fielding. He was like Gary Ablett Snr - there were a few players around who you would call great fielders, but Harper was just at another level.

And then in his last couple of seasons, he completely lost it. Completely - not just ordinary, he became a poor fielder. What was interesting was his bowling (which admittedly had never been that good) became horrible, his action became very jerky, and his run-up looked like a constipated crab. It may have just been the yips, but it seriously made you think that maybe something had happened to his sense of balance or physical co-ordination, because of the effect on his fielding.
