Did Mackie help you with your team as well as your lines? :p
I was spewing I didn't get to pick him - an underrated player and the best sledger in the business!

towered over Sharp then!
;) :p

I jest; I fully support the needs to account for the different era's heights; otherwise we would be overlooking some of the very best players the club has produced through no fault of their own. :thumbsu:

Cliff Rankin was a full forward most of his career, and he ain't even 6 foot lol

Peter Doyle was one of our most talented and skilled players
Knee injuries cruelled him
A notable game Sth Melb v Gee lakeside Oval was a revelation 1975
Worth watching

I nearly picked Derek Hall a couple of times near the end.

Was a bit like Peter Johnstone - terrific mark, horrible kick.

Funny you say that - I was thinking similar. Though the stats show he wasn't too bad - over 96/97 he kicked 50 goals, 46 behinds. Not a great ratio but not terrible either. Johnson by comparison was a little worse.

1986 Geelong 1 6
1985 Geelong 1 0
1984 Geelong 14 4
1983 Geelong 11 13
1982 Geelong 24 31
1980 Geelong 19 21
1978 Melbourne 31 11
1977 Melbourne 1 0
1976 Melbourne 4 0

Aside from 1978 and perhaps 1984 he was generally kicking more behinds than goals. I think with him it was also the manner of them - he tended to kick a behind from directly in front of goal in clutch moments which made it all the more demoralising.

Johnston's accuracy stats aren't terrible on face value. I agree it was the manner which he missed them that sticks in the mind. They didn't include out on the full stats either, he would have had a fair few of those.

I remember an interview with him where he said over the course of his career he lost all confidence in his technique, and if he shanked one early he was generally in for a shocker. Wasn't bad in open play though, probably because he didn't have to think about his action too much.
