If he's contracted they do.
UFC had to agree for him to fight Mayweather. He was under contract before the Mayweather fight and hasn't fought since then. I don't think they let him out of it but I do think he is in a position to renegotiated it based on his draw and value.

I've read that now he has a pro boxing licence and has competed, he is subject to, and gains the protection of the Ali act.

It would need to be resolved in a court but he isn't without a case. Gives him a little extra leverage I suppose and it isn't something the UFC would want going through the courts on the off chance they lose.

I'm assuming this is all a power play though.

Young girl dies from extreme weight cut. Stories like this pop up every few months it seems, this one would be too far removed from US/UFC to make too many waves but surely its gotta be reviewed.
I was just telling some of my non combat sport fan mates about weight cutting last night. In my opinion it's the most dangerous thing about combat sports, far more than getting punched in the head or whatever. One of my mates asked why they can't weigh the fighters on the way to the ring, and I wasn't really sure why. Of course they wouldn't want a fighter missing weight so close to a fight but it happens already and they penalise the fighter part of their purse, so maybe that's a possibility.

I think in the US for their wrestling they do a series of weigh ins in order to determine what weight class they are in, it's meant to discourage weight cutting. I guess it's still possible to keep wasting in order to make the weight but anything that tries to control this is a good thing imo.

Because the risk of them walking into the cage completely dehydrated and drained of energy is incredibly dangerous?

I’m pretty sure One (Asian fight promotion) instituted a new weight policy that determined you must be within a percentage of your out of camp weight. Essentially dictating the weight class you can fight in, I can’t honestky say I see too many viable alternatives.
Probably the safest and most viable option.

Weighing fighters on same day or just before a fight is a logistic nightmare for promotions as they'll be screwed if a fighter, particularly the main event, misses weight. Let alone the danger of guys trying to cheat the system and still cut weight and come into the fight dehydrated and starved.

Should be something like, If you sign a contract to fight at 170, You cant be more that 10-15% heavier that the weight limit in which you signed to fight in

Ad a weigh in 36 hours out from the fight and another the morning of the fight.

Surely no fighter would try to maintain his peak cut for an additional 24 hours going into the day of the fight. It would take them well past the point where any size advantage would be more than diminished by the toll on the body, strength and stamina.

No strength and conditioning coach would encourage this.

I think that’s the issue. Short of checking a fighters weight weekly/fortnightly and enforcing a fighters weight class someone is gonna try to game the system and get what they think is an “advantage”. Let’s not forget Rumble tried to fight as a welterweight for gods sake.

As much as Conor was out of his element in a boxing ring, The exact same math applies here. Floyd has no idea what would happen in an MMA ring. Would get taken down and slapped around for 14 mins and 40 seconds before a RNC gets applied and taps with 10 seconds left

Or that. Would all depend on what the opponent wants to do. Finish him in 10 seconds or give the ppl 15 mins of viewing gold. He would literally have no say in how the fight goes

Just re-watched Khabib's last 4 fights.

It's quite clever how he uses the cage to cut off space for his opponents. It's like fighting two guys at once....one is holding you down and the other punches'n'elbows whilst your helpless on the ground. Easier said than done but whoever fights him next has to stay in the middle of the cage for as long as possible.
