Yep, first instinct should have been to pick it up.

maybe he was worried the bell was about to go and just wanted it done asap? That's the only reason I can think of. There's no way he thought he was in danger of being chased down if he picked it up

To be honest, he's still short-stepping it there. If he went hard like N Riewoldt would have done it's Christiensen that would have copped the knee to the chest.

Heppell is a fine player, but he doesn't go in hard. Goes when he has to, but often in a half-hearted fashion. Also he's a poor kick.

I disagree, he is striding as if to take the mark while assuming Christensen wasn't heading in for the mark as well. His eyes are only on the ball and he is timing his steps to take the mark...

Agreed, he does short step sometimes but this occasion isn't one of them.
