Unlike other drinks in the house I live (except for maybe scotch), there really doesn't seem to be any flexibility when it comes to gin.

Despite one housemate having had a brief flirtation with Tanqueray, it is either drunk one of two ways, Hendrick's with Fever Tree tonic and a slice of cucumber or Bombay Sapphire with Schweppes tonic and a slice of lime.

After a false start, spring weather will soon be upon us Melbournians, so I was wondering for a person looking to broaden his gin horizons, what are peoples favorite gins?

Also are there any specialist bottle shops that stock stuff from more boutique distilleries, or less drunk options from the popular mainstays (e.g. Bombay London Dry, or Bombay Sapphire East)?

Gin is a terrible drink, only time I drank it was when I was about 16 and me and my scaly mates in our raiding our parents liquor cabinet stage chose gin as it was a clear spirit that could be replaced by tap water.

I don't think my olds ever noticed unless they hosted a cocktail party and someone ordered a gin and tonic and they got served tap water instead.

Is gin the new cider?

Gin martinis. I just get tanqueray. If i'm duty free shopping then i'll buy a bottle of Number Ten.

I always have a bottle of gin and vodka in my freezer mainly for martinis.

If you don't like it, I now like it even more.

Gin is now popular for no logical reason?
Nope. With good reason.

I think there has been somewhat of a revival in Melbourne, with places like the Gin palace opening, but really nothing to rival the ongoing craft beer scene or continued cocktail fads.

The resurgence in the UK and Spain has been far greater, with the emergence of some impressive artisan distilleries, however it is still very much a classic drink.

I am an unabashed fan and am wondering, are there any like minded people lurking around these boards and what gins do they enjoy or recommend?

I have no problem with Gin, I just don't understand the popularity of Cider. It has a very boring taste..

But anyway, I do have gin in my cupboard, don't mind a gin and juice every now and then, but haven't really tried out any more traditional ways to drink it.

Never really explored the G&J phenomena, might give it a go. As for cider, I am not opposed to it, but it does make me feel queezy after a pint or so. Would much rather beer.

The gin palace has been around for over a decade.

Gin is not a new craze.
I thought it was less than that, however you are right. Not only is it not a new craze, but not a craze at all.

The artisan distillery boom is however a new phenomena. I would be more partial to say buying Sipsmith and the like, if it wasn't so gruesomely overpriced here.

Do you know of any bottleshops with a good range of gins?

what are you after? I know that psarakos stock number ten but i would have thought dan murphys stock that too.

Next time i go to psarakos i'll check out their fancy gin selection and let you know via this thread.

Cool thanks. As for he number 10, we had a bottle(s). They are now gone.

I drank a shitload of it in Japan over the summer. No excise and there is this western themed bar in Tokyo (in Ikkebekuro and Ebisu), where happy hour extends to 9pm. Top shelf G&T's for 400 yen. Dangerous.
