How should one read the Bible? We've gone over this time and again and then new Muppets come in and say the same literal/metaphor rhetoric. Seriously, what is the point of the book if the whole bloody thing should be taken with a grain of salt?
I don't know how to read the ******* thing. All I am saying is there was a great flood, and not to read it 100% literally, ie when they say "the whole world" it means THEIR whole ******* world.

Not rocket science people.

That I don't have enough information to make an informed decision, and in that respect I think dogmatic affirmations and denials are as ill informed as each other.

My hunch? It means little of course but I'd be surprised if we are all there is. Very bloody surprised.
Sorry I got you mixed up with Roylion before .

How can I know that? Because we in the modern world through the disciplines of archaeology, geology and the like are well aware of the relative sizes of flood events both in our own time and in the past.

Your point is obviously that the people at the time saw whatever flood event the Noah myth is referring to as large and cataclysmic. Yes, that's obvious. That they were inspired to construct a story of it being of supernatural origins, based on their own world view and scope (which compared to ours in the modern world is obviously more limited) is also obvious. They used their own existing extensive mythology to place that story in their cultural context.

Yes.....and?

Human literature. Human fear/dream. Indeed.

The supernatural aspect of the story is obviously an invented embellishment.
Might I suggest brushing up on some mythology.

You're lack of a holistic understanding of myth is appalling for a history teacher.

Tell him about that fellow you told me about. You know the guy that combines alot of spiritual things etc . You know the one who says we won't understand because we don't have the language for it.
Apologies if I've mixed you up with someone.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Dude you've mixed me up with someone else. I have no fuucking idea what you are rambling on about.

And which one was that? What do those archaeologists say about which one it was? Where was it?
Dude calm the **** down. There's a record in that part of the world of a massive flood, and there's a flood story. Maybe they are one and the same, maybe it'a a co inky dink. But don't get your ******* pants on fire about it.

Whether God exists or not should not change your life day to day, because He (or no one, or WTF ever) gave you free will for a reason. Exercise it. If there's things we're not meant to know, then we won't ******* well know them!

not any more, a few thousand years ago yes IMO. thunder- the gods rumbling. lightning- the gods mighty hand coming down to smite the sinners. etc....

our ancestors logic- why is this happening to us? it is quite simple to explain the need our ancestors had for a god/s. i have said it a hundred times but it bears repeating- god/s of the gaps. there is plenty of information out there, couple of short ones here. very logical, have a look at the links.

http://humansarefree.com/2013/06/the-island-where-dead-us-soldier-is.html

Yep it's the God concept manifesting in something. We are here, who made us, what made us. If something made us then who made the thing that made us
This hasn't changed to this day.
People didn't think it's raining quick let's invent God. That volcanoe is powerful and mysterious that will be our focal point for our creator we will throw virgins in there to make him happy because volcanoes seem to have a human element happy angry quiet.

Those island people had the God concept well before that pilot or who ever showed up.

As I said before science is no further along to who or what made us. It's still just stuff and it's in motion or been put in motion. Finding a black hole is the same as finding a frog in a pond... its stuff and it's in motion. A big band just asks what went bang and if by accident why it went bang when it did.

Gods of gaps is a fallacy. It works both ways. Untill we have covered in all the gaps we can't prove God.
If a huge white bearded fellow appeared over the clouds and thundered I am the creator your God " because we have gaps in our knowledge we could say that could have been aliens much more advanced than us playing on the knowledge they read from our minds. etc

You know I don't like the God of gaps. It alludes to that we can fill in the gaps but humans are just filling in the gaps of how things move and how things change .

What do you believe when you read the Bible? You say you don't know how to read it but you sure are opinionated when it comes to others' interpretations of what they read. When I read the Bible I just don't see anything worthy of taking into every day life. And that is putting aside all the other issues I have with it.

You're telling him to "calm the fcuk down" when you're going troppo yourself? Roylion was as calm as I've seen anyone in this thread.

Your insights to this theological discussion are wonderful. If you don't want to discuss the intricacies of belief/non-belief then I suggest finding another thread.

I don't derive my morality from a book. Do I need to Bible to be a good person? No, I don't.

Calm down? I'm merely asking you some questions. You appear to be the one getting worked up. I'm asking you about the "record in that part of the world of a massive flood." What record are you speaking of?

I believe he is speaking about the recorded one, in at least 3 disparate historical accounts.....You know: The one you weren't present for.:)

Mate I am not opinionated as regards others interpretations, you've said that without evidence. I've got NFI how to read it.
