Autopsy The good, the bad and the ugly Vs Swans R12 2019

I am not too worried about this game TBH.
Thinking about it, we really only play at a ground like the SCG once a year, possibly twice if you factor in the Tassy ground. To change a game plan for 1 or 2 games could be detrimental to the whole package. We have a game style that suits the majority of AFL grounds in the competition, and if we lose at these postage stamps but still win the flag, who cares?
Remember, we lost in Tassy and at the SCG last year and that didnt turn out too bad, did it?

Agreed. Smith was perplexing. Masten, believe it or not can play inside if instructed to do so. Better yet reward Ah Chee or M allen. Ah chee would have been closest (though inferior) replacement given size and aerial ability.

M Allan picked up 35 possessions in the WAFL game.

He was the obvious replacement for Yeo position wise and size wise.

But we went for Smith who is nothing like Yeo and did bugger all........but so did most of the side.

The side just looked totally switched off. Noted throughout the whole game when the Swans had it we were standing still or jogging as they ran it out of defense, no pressure no intent.

Shocking effort.

Sorry but I totally dissagree. It has nothing to do with the ground, it has everything to do with the Swans game plan beating ours.

The Swans and that game plan have defeated ours time and time again at Optus and at Subi. The Swans are more than happy for us to chip the ball sideways in defense and inch up the ground slowly with 16m passes. While we do that they flood back, clog up space and double / triple team our dangerous forwards. Then we just pump it in long, they get it run it out fast and hey presto have a empty forward line with space for Buddy and friends to work with.

Other clubs will take note. Clubs like Collingwood have shown they can change game plans to suit different teams and locations. But we cant and shouldnt?

When a team becomes too predictable then the opposition take advantage. To the Swans were are totally predictable and they have the game plan to trump us it seems every time.

And yes the Swans are predictable as well........but we dont play the right style to counter that.

Does anyone think that the 6-6-6 has hurt us in regards to not allowing Simmo to stop the midfield momentum by putting an extra behind the ball at the bounce? Is there anything to this or is the midfield just not putting in the yards giving our forwards first use out of the middle?

It hurts when we get smashed at centre cleqrances like yesterday.

Nah, disagree there.
yeah we lost to the Swans at Optus in round 1 last year, but prior to that we beat them at home in 2017 and 2015. Our long kick to open players or 1 on 1 just doesnt work at the SCG because its never going to be open or 1 on 1. The ground is small enough for players to make it a pack each time. Sydney bring the ball to ground for a contested possession or a ball up, which they do better than us at the moment (god we got killed in the ruck). More space stretches the players and allows for our running to open space or 1 on 1 play.
Our chipping the ball 16m side to side is a necessity, buying time to allow players to run into space and they receive a kick, something that is very difficult to do at the SCG. SCG suits a hard tackling, quick handball style of play. I dont want us to waste training on this style if it is to the detriment of our long kicking style that won us last year's flag.

Re our lack of game plans - I heard Simmo a couple of weeks back saying how he was aware that there was a way to beat us being used by other teams and when that is put into play, he'll just switch game plans if necessary. They have contingency plans for different scenarios. Probably the same for many teams. And you can see the switch in our games, after half time etc. But clearly, we have no answer for Swans - annoyingly not even on our home deck. But they do flood back, clog up our forward line, run it out quick to their emptier forward line. This is what they do to us, so why can't the coaches/players counteract that after how many games now? - for at least a better performance. But yes, we need to stop these blow-outs after the bye.

Coming off a cruisy flat-track exhibition match with the Dogs we walked into our own arrogant trainwreck waiting to happen? I don't know the answers or the causes (ask HT-probably Waterman?) as to why all our losses have been humungous except to say it's a different season and we're the hunted-perhaps it also shows how much of a 'team' team we are, if you hit our weak spot, we lose our composure and we fall apart. We rely on the team structure or net so much. In those big losses, we've just been completely deconstructed and exposed, and that's as much a coaching thing as players onfield intent. The Swans also recently have Cox as Intel. Fortunately, we don't get to play Swans again.
Anyway, full Kudos to Swans, you did it again!

How good do we look after the bye with our ins! Even Masten???

I still don’t know what happened in our forward line yesterday?

Every time they just ran the ball out of there like we had no one playing down there. Our forward half pressure is normally up there with the best?

Was it because the mids were not following up to put pressure on? It’s hard to tell what’s going on behind play when you aren’t at the ground.

The commentators mentioned several times that our forwards were getting drawn too far up the ground so there was no-one to kick to when we won the ball around HB (you couldn't see this on TV due to camera angles). I suspect our small forwards were coming up to the contest and weren't there to crumb when the ball hit the ground off a pack.

I'll give the match committee the benefit of the doubt and assume that both Yeo and Hurn were actually legitimately injured and unable to play.

That said, if they could have played and the plan was that they were going to be given an extended rest going in the the bye, then they have really taken the piss

Lets start at the top......
Simmo..Mate you got outcoached comprehensively. Gaff and Sheed cant play in the middle together. Its like having two witches hats in there.Mcgovern to Buddy shows FAR too much respect and opens the game up to their other forwards. When your getting bent over and shafted did you sit there thinking "we can still win this" ?? Make some moves for Gods sake!! Gov can play midfield or forward.Petrol has the speed to do stints in the guts.Ryan should be in the middle as much as possible.Whenever hes near the ball our chances of success go skyhigh.

BIG ++ Ryan.An out and out star!!

The negatives like everybody else will be a long list
...The Rucks. We looked better with Vardy jumping but Hickey got in good positions but did F.A. with his taps.Mate take the ball clean and kick the Effing thing. You look better taking the ball clean out of the contest but you dont do it often enough. The other advantage is that your feet are on the ground and you can get involved in the next contest which has been your strength this year.
..Dom Sheed;ive never seen a bloke your size get brushed aside so much in tackles.
..When our mids are as slow as Sheed,Gaff and Reddan;why are they all more than 5m from the ruck contest. There was SOooo much space at the feet of the rucks that Sydney just used their pace to run into.
...Waterman?..Ive revised my opinion;hes a good WAFL player.Twice he got out marked and he dropped his little chin on his little chest to show how sad and disappointed he was..with the addition of Reid running round him and goaling.Get AGGRESSIVE!!!!You should have got in Alirs face coz he doesnt like it.He just likes to get a nice free run and mark on your head and make you look like a Dill.
...Smith?..Nope! Ran around most times like a chook without a head.
...Whilst im busy telling my mates that this is the best crop of small forwards the club has ever had;the delivery kept coming on top of their head.If Alir took one more effing intercept mark i was gonna slash my wrist. The big boys weren't taking marks KICK LOW! Ryan was on fire kick it out in front of him hes got pace and evasive skills to burn.Jamie Graham you need to work on a plan "B".
..JD you need to get a wriggle on when you have ball in hand. You dither!!
..Shep..Took lots of marks and "used the ball well". Ive noticed a tendency lately for you to;yes heres that word again; Dither! You mark at halfback, stop, look, then chip sideways to the boundary.Your stat looks good but you havnt attacked, youve pushed us into a corner and palmed responsibility on someone else.
..Further to that;whats with our lack of gumption coming out of the backline? When we lose we get flogged. We become a boundary hugging team of wimps. We totally give up control of the corridor.Do we have set plays for kickouts?
..Jetta gathers in the back pocket and does a silly 30m airball to Rotham?.Cole is standing next to him.A Sydney guy charges through and punches forward and they goal.Cole should have gotten body in to protect him but he just stood there.Little things! The ball is kicked long to the wing;three WC players fly for the mark;ball comes to ground to the sole Sydney player in the contest who says thank you very much.
...Players around goal need to look back to 30-40 out and pinpoint somebody instead of going for the "death or glory" goal.
...Rioli was very unlucky as his tackle was very low and that contributed to the action.

sydney is a shithole. Its the size of the losses that are a worry. While we sit around saying dont worry we are not going to change things yet, we can come back;the flogging gets bigger. There are certain games and certain venues that we need to change our mindset.
As ive said in recent weeks; clubs are now trying to short pass through us and Sydneys effort will encourage all clubs to go down that route.Forward defensive pressure is now No1 priority. But its very hard to do that week in week out;its draining! As long as we do it at the right time against the right teams we will still win the GF.

Similar to the St Kilda game last year before the bye. A better team would have rolled us.

Hopefully history repeats again and you **** all know what happened next.

How did our mids go on Sunday? Ryan is good enough to play anywhere. If your getting killed out of the midfield and killed on the scoreboard;Ryan near goals? Nah! How'd Gov go? Got forward for a decent goal..oh yea courtesy of a magnificent spot up from...Ryan!

+ Liam Ryan.

Feeling more circumspect and certainly more sober today. And it's worth highlighting this man's development in 25 games.

Named best Eagle afield in that trainwreck. He kept his head up on the other side of the country. And his work rate has been exceptional all year.

Things were looking dicey at the end of last year, but the club has handled it well. I thought the coaching group's attitude post the training camp was very mature. It showed the gulf between WC and another powerhouse but dysfunctional club like Adelaide.

Hopefully he continues to elevate his game and develop off the field. Could be an elite and more importantly complete small/half forward.

Rioli and Vardy each given a week.

Rioli’s was inevitable the second old mate got hurt, because that’s the system now, but I’d like us to challenge on the grounds that his arms weren’t pinned and he elected to not protect himself.

Vardy is interesting. I want him out of the side so it’s not a huge deal, but that sort of bump being a suspension is farce. It was barely a down field free, let alone a suspension. You wouldn’t want a bump like that to rule someone out of a final, although come finals they’d change the interpretation anyway so it’s moot.

The most disappointing thing apart from the loss in this game was the match committee. You don’t lose a big bodied mid and replace them with an outside runner when you’re playing on a small oval against a team that is great in the contest. We lost the game in the middle which exacerbated our lackadaisical efforts in the backline.
When Yeo went out, it should have been Ah Chee or at least Mallen in to add more grunt around the contest. Hewitt had a field day with his size and strength against our small mids. Also, FFS Sheed learn to tackle you downhill skier.
