Why is there stripes on all the ovals? Some have checkers? always wondered

how do they get different colors. i.e. light green and dark green. is it simply because they mow one stripe lower than than the other? if so, won't the unevenness bother players?

I'm in no way educated in green keeping but pretty sure it's only the direction of which way the mower is driven gives the appearance of different colour/texture. Similar to thick plush carpet being vacuumed in a different direction. * I'm only assuming this so please don't take it as gospel.

When they start getting funky with zig-zag or diagonal stripes, it makes my brain mad.

But yeah, pretty sure it's just the type of grass naturally having that felt/carpet effect of being cut from different directions.
