One thing I have noticed about the great coaches and those excellent newish coaches is they have a presence and aura about them that even the media rarely joke around with.
Malthouse,Sheedy,Mathews or Woosha, none put up with ********. Conolly has he is often referred to is cuddly and the funny fat guy, in high sight should we have seen this from day one?
Seems that in football the coaches that are the most successful are the most feared.

The most feared, the most respected. Those guys down at WCE worship the ground Woosh walks on, hell half the team probably had his photo up on their wall... just so different to the Freo Culture. Get "The King" in here, get someone who commands respect, and we'd be a hell of a better football team.

If Woosh were run over by a bus tomorrow, I'd be leaning towards Carey as a good candidate for a senior job- I reckon Freo would want to look long and hard at him also.

Inexperienced and a gamble, definitely, but he has serious footy smarts, he inspires respect and he'd be a very clean break from the previous culture that has surrounded Freo. IMO, the first team to take a gamble on him will be onto a winner.

Yeah your right, all the best coaches have an aura and players respect and fear them. Lucky for us, Woosha has it in spades! Your coach is often referred to as funny, or cuddly and he is always having a laugh. That doesnt really make me fear him never mind respect him.

I agree on Carey. I'd gamble on him if I were Freo.

Not gonna happen, re Carey.

The bloke is not going to turn down media $$ until the fire to coach is too much to stay away from. Not close to happening.

Also, I think some underestimate the tactical nouse needed by a footy coach. These blokes are students of the whole game. They spend most of every day of the year involving themselves in footy. Honestly, Wayne doesn't strike me as being that bloke.

He would be a great asset to a footy club in a FT assistant's role, forward coach etc etc, but I don't think he will ever be a senior coach, and definately not for a while.

Take an extreme scenario. Your team is one point up with seconds to go. You have the ball on the defensive 50. You kick, but stuff it up and the ball goes straight to your opponent. You hang your head in shame as he runs straight past you and kicks the winning goal. Now which AFL coach would you most like to explain that to? The only two that I can think of where I would even be game to leave the ground are Connolly and Neil Craig. And Neil Craig only makes the list because I don't know what he looks like, so hopefully he won't recognise me either.

Now, I'm not convinced that an atmosphere where players are afraid to stuff up is necessarily a good thing, and I doubt that most of the AFL coaches rely on it all that much, but most of them at least have it as a part of their tookit.

Carey is just flavour of the month, Hocking was popular sometime back and look how he is doing now.

No, if we have to get a new coach I want us to remember three words, “proven track record”. The club has employed three untried coaches, none of whom have had anything more than fleeting success.

Carey coaching the Dockers is about as likely as John Elliott returning as president of Carlton.

Carey said on Melbourne radio at the weekend the Dockers were an embarrassment and everyone in the footy world knew it

Fair points Mead, but how many gambles can Freo afford?.

We have gambled with 3 untried coaches at the AFL level, can we go for an untried again?.

Really I think the club needs to contact all experienced coaches and throw cash at them. Malthouse, Sheedy, Blight, Mathews etc.

I like CC, but as an AFL coach he doesn't cut the mustard.

That is a fair comment, but my Ma & Pa taught me that if you can't do better, don't comment.

Will any of these media personalities get off their seats and tackle the task, as they seem to have all the answers?.

If Connolly was so bad why were Hawthorn sounding him out at the end of last season? I think people should remember he spent 10 years preparing himself to be a senior coach. He lives and breathes football.

AFL coaching is one tough caper as much luck as anything. Connolly was the right choice for Freo at the time. But at some point he lost the players, and if management theory is anything to go by, once that happens you don't get them back.

I think our current performances indicate a change of coach will be necessary. But the frenzy people work themselves into about he was never any good and he should never have been appointed ignore the hundreds of coaches who have taken on an AFL gig and couldn't get a team to fly. You can count the great ones on your fingers but that doesn't mean everyone else was a complete dud.

I like the idea of a Carey or Laidley. However you do not have to be a great player (look at Malthouse and Sheedy) to be a good coach. You do however need to have the respect of the players. Worsfold got a headstart through being a great player and has continued that on in his coaching performance.

Carey could be a Worsfold but he could also be a Tim Watson, he is untried. I lean slightly to Laidley, however as mentioned in a previous post he is likely to be loyal to the Kangaroos cause and not accept any offer.

I expect that the current board would not want too strong a minded coach who would have too big a say in the whole club in their mind (say a Wallace) and that may have gone part way to the Connolly choice. That attitude may restrict our choice if we decide to change coaches.

This is a really interesting thread and it raises some important questions - do you have to be feared to be a good AFL coach? The only succesful coach I can think of that was more of a teacher was Parkin - but he could give a good spray none the less.

Throw $2 Mill at Pagan. Whatever it takes.

As North fans know, his loyalty lasts as long as a massive contracts do, so don't think he is tied to Essendon. Pav would never move from the forward 50 and you would not have one single footballer on the list who didn't work hard.

Top 4 certainty within the year.
