Grab a Shinkansen rail-pass (has to be ordered outside the country) and use that to get around.

Tokyo is obvious, but beyond the usual hit-list (Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku etc.), check out Yoyogi Park on a Sunday - it's where the locals go for their group recreation, which ranges from mass frisbee games to middle aged dudes in Grease costumes having dance-offs.

Hiroshima is incredibly powerful, and while you're there Miyajima Island out in the bay is worth a squiz. Old temple island, good little "mountain" to climb, and the whole place is overrun with feral deer.

If you like history, the best preserved castle is at Himeji (most were destroyed during WW2 and rebuilt in concrete), halfway down the train line from Osaka to Hiroshima. You can leave one in the morning, hop off halfway and stash your bags in lockers, stroll up the hill and check out the castle, and still reach the other that afternoon.

My absolute favourite though was Jigokudani Monkey Park, if you can time it for colder months (maybe October-March at a stretch). It's a national park outside a little village north of Nagano, home to hordes of Japanese Macaques, hanging out in natural hot springs in the middle of the snow.

You might also want to rethink your vegetarianism.

Well that isn't going to happen haha, I'll do some research on vegetarian options so I can plan ahead!

Thanks for all the tips! Was planning on going later this year or maybe even early next year so have a bit of time to sort everything out!

And yeah, love history especially anything to do with WW1 & WW2 :)

if theres one show that makes me pine to travel, and miss europe - strangley enough its great continental railway journeys on SBS

I know its not strictly a travel show in the getaway, go here and do this, type of show.

Its more him following an old 1900s guid book - revisiting journeys the book suggested back then and to see what has changed, bit of a history lesson, bit of modern Europe... i just get all toey watching it.. i want to be back there!

Anyhow last night journey was the classic London to monte Carlo via Paris, Marsielles, Antibe, Nice.

When he got to Monte Carlo he went to the casino, he said it was the first legal casino in the world, sold to the residents by saying the money we make off the foreigners will stop the need for you to pay taxes.

So back then, and still now, residents are not allowed in the casino, not even the prince, and then as now, the residents dont have to pay tax.

I had no idea thats why monte Carlo is a tax free haven...

Wtf?

America is an amazing country. Packed full of sights, sounds, culture, incredible food and most importantly extraordinarily friendly people.

It's bizarre to see you say otherwise. Just because their foreign policy is s**t or some ignorant Americans travel, but let's just point out if that's what makes you hate a country why aren't you calling Australia the worst country in the world?

I have a different opinion - Visiting America has never entered my radar - Many countries have sights, sounds, culture, food, people etc.

Sorry Doss I'll just finished up with one more comment.

yaco55 you know I love you like a brother matey but that's just ridiculous. You can't make an assessment if you've never been. I never thought America would be much chop either but then I went. And it was amazing. So went again. And I got engaged there. And then I went back there to get married. And I've only seen a tiny bit of it.

All I'm saying is that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. I know travel isn't something you can always just do but if you ever get a chance go, and let me know if you still hate it - assuming we're still hanging about this joint ;)

Plus they have really good burgers and record stores.

So never been there...

Happy to call it worst country in the world.

The USA is amazing. It is basically 6 or 7 countries in itself and all very different. Parts of it are horrible but other parts are some of the best places in the world.

Chicago in particular is one of my favourite cities in the world.

I've been to the west coast and south (2x1 month visits), even though I enjoyed it I always felt Australia is similar but better in all aspects so I look forward in coming home. I still will go one more time for the East coast (New York)
With Europe, I've been twice with a 6 months trip and a 1 month trip and both times i leave begrudgingly as it's so much to do, see and the people! I'm heading back to Europe at the end of July for 6 weeks and it'll be interesting if I feel that way again.
If I do I'll have to seriously contemplate moving...

My only slight disappointment is the lack of central and Eastern Europe, but we only have five weeks and some would argue we're packing a lot in as it is.

Also wanted to get to Belgium, Netherlands, Portugal and Greece, but there simply wasn't time.

It will have to be another trip one day.
