Did anyone else find it a little humorous that Rocky was accused of using a homophobic taunt while he was getting a piggy back ride from Jack Reddan… #bromance

Here's my golden rule, don't use terms that have been used to belittle people based on their race, gender or sexual orientation for decades, no matter the setting. Wouldn't be that hard you'd think.

Golden rules are great, except they generally crumble under the pressure of reality. I'm sure you'd be hard pressed to find people who think your golden rule is bad. I'm equally sure you'd be hard pressed to find someone who could follow it in every situation they find themselves in life. So it must be harder you'd think or we'd never have to deal with this sort of issue.

And now you're just making yourself sound like some men's right activist wanting to use appallingly derogatory terms under the guise of "It's alright boys, we're on a footy field!"

Acutally, you're trying to make me sound that way. I'm just pointing out it's not as simple as the anti-sledging argument makes it seem. If sledging is bad when it's about your pet issues then surely it's bad about other peoples pet issues (antisocial hetrosexual behaviour, body image, etc) as well. Who is to say that because an issue has decades of stigma around it that it's any more or less hurtful than something with years of stigma around it. But then nearly anything could be someone pet issues so what we're 'allowed' to say would be a very narrow set of quite polite comments which again, is so far removed from the reality of life it's pointless.

Well this was a lot of hot air for all the footy shows to churn through - bread and butter controversy that they love. They will be disappointed that they couldn't stretch this out longer while the ASADA controversy is in temporary hiatus while it drags through court. And St Kilda only throw dwarves in the off-season. It was either dwell on Rocky-Boomergate or have to discuss whatever stupid thing Eddie Maguire said this week.

Hopefully sanity will now prevail, seems like Rocky made a mistake in the heat of the moment and will most likely learn from it.

I understand context, and maybe I haven't explained myself as well as I could. My beef is the hypocracy of the situation with the AFL and Harvey, possibly more than with Rockliff. They are the ones making the claim of offence, yet not so upset as to punish it or make a statement.

I am far from convinced that Harvey has actually taken it any further than being offended at the time, because it was a sledge post siren, not because of the content. I do not believe he's done anything at all to make this bigger. Nothing in the media from Harvey, and the AFL have not stated that they have investigated because of a complaint by Harvey, and they usually point that out if a player has complained. Brad Scott escalated it, and then the media escalated it because of Brad Scott's unusual actions being caught on film. The AFL thus had to investigate and come out with a result, which they have. I don't actually blame Harvey. I think he is of the school of not sticking it up your opponent once the siren has gone, and believe that was his very brief beef in its entirety.

And yet none of the parties have knocked it on the head.
The best way to put a stop to the speculation, rumour mongering and media beat up is for all parties to fess up and make amends, or clear the air with what was said. (Even if it is a vague representation "I swore at him" or "I had a go at his physical stature", or "I used a word that has homophobic overtones")

I dont think there is any need to. It just brings it back to the surface. This whole thing is betweeen Rocky and Harvey, if those two have cleared the air and are all good, then it should be let go. It has nothing to do with anyone else, media included.

Another thing that adds to the unique nature of this situation is it is very rare that both teams are milled together so close on the ground after a game, and it was a send off so he admittedly got across to shake some former team mates hands (though it looked like a front to get to rockcliff) given the nature of the celebration. It would be rare that the opportunity to confront a player like that, on field, would actually present its self.. highly doubt he would have sought rockcliff out during regular after the siren circumstances, nor actually been on the ground with the chance to do it..

So there is no proof of anything homophobic being said, and the only bloke in the whole saga with any form is Harvey with his 300 pinches?

$1000 donation that the AFL rubber stamped, suggests it wasn't anything that breaks their homophobia code, particularly given the recent advertising running with Jason Ball in them.

Look I blame Redden, I don't care he has stress fracture in the ankle, if he MANNED UP and was able to carry Rocky and not stumble into Boomer none of this would of happened.

Seriously though put simply, highly charged game, Rocky says something he shouldn't of after the siren, which is the real issue not what was said, after the siren. Quite frankly Rocky was out of line, if one of my kids did that I would kick them up the bum. Boomer knowing Norf have just let a game go they shouldn't of, isn't happy. You know what, fair enough. Came up to shake hands after the game said "what was that about?" Rocky should have apologised there, the whole thing is over. "It was a spur of the moment reaction on a close game and big night for the club, emotions got the better of me."

Boomer isn't a sook, you don't survive 17 years at the top getting tagged most games and be a sook. If he played for us, we would love him.

Brad Scott should of stayed the hell out of it, he has made it an issue. But Rocky shouldn't of done it in the first place.

To be fair, Rocky copped to it straight away in his post game interview and reportedly sought Boomer out to apologise after that as well.

Just because the media dined out on it for days doesn't mean that we should erroneously let the history books imply that Rocky had to be dragged kicking and screaming to apologise.

He was immediately remorseful but, like most people, was also understandably shitted off by Brad Scott and moreso the media at how it got stripmined for every bit of tabloid goodness possible.
