Get rid of Kewell

Get Jeff Kennet to take over. (Ah he gave us crown casino, Colonial stadium and Federation square Hmmmm)

Are they dreaming ?

They need 2 Kewells.

Uruguay and Australia were broadly similar except their 2 strikers were effective. Kewll needed support. simple as that.

And I hear Margaret Thatcher is the new British olympic coach

Peter Desira made a number of points, most of them painfully obvious and not really adding anyting new.

The suggestion to get rid of Kewell is just plain stupid. He looked like the only player capable of getting a score for us and so what if he prefers to travel first class. For God's sake, he is easily the best Australian player and one of the best overall in the world. To suggest that we would be better off without him is just plain lunacy!

I do agree with the suggestion of Kennett taking over the running of Soccer Australia. I look forward to to Kennett manifestio which is apparently due to be released next Monday.

Whatever side of politics you come from, you cannot deny that Kennett picked up the State of Victoria when it was a bankrupt wreck and turned it around in a relatively short period. Sure, there weren't too many prisoners taken in that period, but in the end, do we really care. He did revive the state and that is what matters.

I would be most delighted if he took the same Can-do attitude and tore Soccer Australia a new ars*hole!

There have been plenty of kennets in soccer over several years - why would he be any different ?

You need to get FIFA to see australia as a legitimate mrket, which they obviously don't. Perhaps australia needs to withdraw from FIFA inorder to get what they need.

Didn't he (and stockdale) just raise taxes to unprecedented levels ? How can he do that in soccer ? Charge twice as much to get in to a game ? Half as many would attend

Because this 'Kennet' would get the attention of the media.

With a population of 19 million, FIFA really don't care about how the code is in Australia, and at this stage I don't think they ever will.

On the Kewell article, a fair point was raised in the Hun. We have quality players, but we just don't have a quality team. We need to mould a team around players that are prepared to play at any occasion, not just over the final month.

As I saw it australia matched uruguay around the ground but their strikers took their opportunities but the aussie strikers did not.

This is very common in soccer and the reason why strikers get paid a lot. they can be added to an ordinary team and the results are instantaneous. Had recoba and the other dude been playing for oz tthe result would have been reversed.

Had there been 2 Kewells this conversation would not be taking place.

Take kewell out (for any reason) and australia don't have a chance in hell.
The sun is talking through its a.....

WTF?!
God, i hope he never reads that article. The guy is an absolute gun and its a pleasure to have a player of his quality playing for Australia.

Especially after he was offered a postion to play with England instead a few years back. He is loyal and a player that is vital to the Socceroos' future.

I don't think they were implying TOTALLY GET RID OF KEWELL, but the fact is, I think his mind is more on playing for Leeds rather than Australia.

Before the France match, he had played what, an hour of soccer for Australia in the past year? The team needs to gel, and they need to practise together, rather than just be thrown together and expected to qualify for the world cup!

That's fine in theory, but what Desira has ignored is that we play our World Cup qualifiers against the likes of Western Samoa and Fiji.....without the likes of Kewell and Viduka, we still beat these sides 20-0. Teams only bond together if they're playing against decent opponents.....games against countries like the ones I've just mentioned probably aren't even as tough as a normal training session.

As Richmond have drafted a player of Fijian origin, I feel it is my duty to protect the national honour of that country! :p

Australia only beat Fiji 2 - 0, albeit with a second string team. I think that you may find that Fiji aren't that far behind the likes of New Zealand in terms of world rankings.

That aside, I think your point is entirely valid!

Top strikers don't need to 'gel' they jusyt need to take the chances they are presented with.

The guy who scored the first goal was half injured and had had a rest while the rest of the team slogged it out in OZ !

What australian need is two harry kewells, not none at all.

Fair enough. I don't really know a lot about soccer, I'll admit that, but I'm trying to learn more.
I just think that the team needs to sort of 'gel' a bit... practise more together, so that they are able to play to the best of their ability. I'm TOTALLY AGAINST getting Kewell out of the team, because from what I saw, the guy is a superstar.
But your point is very valid, and I get what you mean.

And young David Rodran grew up as a North Melbourne fan. :D

But yeah.....ahem.....Fiji.......didn't check my facts.......I'll be applying for a job at the Herald-Sun now.........

when I was in italy recently, I caught a train from Brescia to Venice, and as I always did, snuck into first class and by pure fluke sat across from an Italian soccer selecter - under 21 team.

As many of his players went to sydney for the olympics, and he saw I was from Australia, we got talking.

Anyway, he said the biggest problem facing Italian football and European football is the fact that players dont stay at a club for all that long, or find it hard to blend in to a club.

He said on paper Italian clubs are by far the best, they have the superstars and generally they perform, however often the clubs suffer because it is very difficult to introduce a player, no matter how good he is, to a new team when he doesnt know the players, style of play, language and ontop he of course has an ego.

Soccer is one sport where everyone, especially a striker, relies so much on team mates to perform. You can just throw a Ronaldo or Vieri in an Inter Milan side and expect them to improve 100%. It just doesnt work that way. Inter try the open cheque book technique for success - but they fail miserably in the shadows of real giants the Rossoneri! :D

On top of that the Italian league is very defensive, and that makes it even harder for strikers.

Im not saying Kewell should be out of the side - but I very much agree that soccer clubs especially must gel - its hard to produce individual flair in such a defensive game without good supply from teammates. Offside is a major problem etc.

Kewell was good - but often he held on to the ball too long, and coulda passed but it seemed he didnt trust too many of his team mates.

Italian/Spanish football is very much one touch stuff, whereas the English style is more kick long and run onto the ball which may explain why he thought he could go all himself - either that or he didnt trust anybody around him, which I guess is fair enough.

Why are France playing so many friendlies with their best team? They dont have to qualify for next year, and need to get games together.

Same as Australia - we cant just bring in Kewell and expect him to do it all.

That was so obvious in the past 3 games - Australia looked like a team who had no real idea what everyone else was doing - Kewell wanted to do it all, and Viduka found it hard to read the ball and create anything.

Our transition from midfield to the strikers was laughable and predictable - Game Plan #1 (and only) - give it to Harry and pray!

At the end of the day the two games were pretty ordinary - Uraguay are fairly hopeless, and we cant beat them. Both teams were playing off just to make up numbers!

The world cup is out of 3 teams - Argentina, Italy and France.
