Mark Harvey showed more at Freo than Ratten did at Carlton and he had to go find a job as an assistant after getting the chop. What makes Ratten so special that he should be able walk straight into another senior job?
Absolutely.

I would take Harvey over Ratten any day.

I actually think Ratten is a good coach. This year, when Carlton were firing... their best was as good as anyone's. In fact, I'd say their best was better than Collingwood and Geelong's this year.

But I don't want him as our coach. I don't think it's a good fit. Eade is a much better fit and much more preferable.

Freo was a basket case under Harvey. Ross Lyon couldn't believe how badly the football department was run. Ratten would be a very good coach for you, and we were stupid to get rid of him.

Did Lyon actually say that? Pretty poor if he did. I guess by saying he inherited a "basket case" it would make any level of success he has as appearing extra special and make him look a coaching genius.

I'm not a massive Ratten fan but his results are better than people on here are giving him credit for. Carlton's list (outside their on-ball brigade) isn't all that good. Their bottom 6 players are as bad as anyones, and their KPP stocks are extremely thin. I reckon he did alright in 10/11 with the players he ahd at his disposal.

Really, why is that. What will Ratten bring to our club?

Whether you guys were stupid for getting rid of him, well time will tell. I have never thought much of him as a coach, however that is from outside and there might be some extenuating circumstances that give me the appearance of Ratten simply being a coach that has no tactical nous and limited man management skills.

But I would be interested too see why you think Ratten will benefit our club after he has just been unable to coach a relatively experienced team with a slew of high draft picks, in supposed ok form, to a loss against the equal bottom team?

Not publicly, but he was shocked at how badly it was run and this incompetence was at least partly responsible for their injury problems last year.

Eade with Bassett as senior assistant would be an amazing get. Second preference would be Eade with Burns senior assistant.
Why would Burns want to come here as a senior assistant when he already has that job at a top club?

I think you guys are forgetting the list we had in 2006/7

And now Ratten is available....

Tbh I think he'd probably want or need to take a break from head coaching for a year, but as our coach, I don't mind it in theory. Although it could smack a little of taking the cheap option as I assume he will be paid out

I dont mind the idea of Eade, there's just a nagging doubt in the back of my head but I can't really place it. I see him more as a coach to exude the best out of a set playing group rather than a developmental coach if that makes sense, and in that sense maybe he isnt the best fit for us.

Wallace.... no chance in hell

Burns/Cameron/Hinkley etc, I don't know enough to comment on any of them. I guess the thing to take out of appointing a fresh coach from the last year or so is it can work wonders (Sando) or it can fail miserably (Neeld). Just taking a guy from a successful club culture and gameplane doesn't mean he will be able to apply either attribute to our specific player group.

I agree with your first point. I disagree with your second. Although Ratten and Carlton were extremely unlucky this year.

Was he the coach in 06/07? When did he actually take over? 2008 wasnt it.

Whilst yeah, you may have had an experienced side in 08 and 09, Ratten has no excuses for not achieving more with his list over the last 2 years.

And I still would like your opinion on exactly what qualities/skills he will bring to Port? Genuinely interested to see what the Carlton faithful see as his strengths.

Carlton stinks as badly as us right now, we don't want anyone from Carlton here.

Shit list management, shit drafting, players are skinnier than ours and no structure to how they play.

Would other clubs try to poach people from our football dept?

Pass.

how do you think Ratten would be a good fit for us?
We were terrible when Ratten took over, and he built us into a good team.
Reckon you guys need someone with good senior experience. You're not going to get Malthouse or Roos, pretty much leaves Eade and Ratts.

Really??? I mean yeah you improved over the 06/07 version but do you really believe with the resources you have, the list you have, you are a good team?

I reckon you might be getting sucked into believing that improvement is the basis of judging how good you are.

It's the 'Big 4 Syndrome'. Prime time television coverage, even when the quality of your football is rubbish, gives you an inflated sense of self worth. Remember when Collingwood were really hopeless and still believed the competition revolved completely around them? Being hyped can often blur perception and reality in supporters minds.

It's only 2nd hand knowledge, but the brother of a very prominent Carlton player told me the players didn't rate Ratten's coaching AT ALL. I wasn't impressed with what I'd seen of Ratten anyway, but that's his death knell as a candidate for me personally.

Weren't Carlton close to Premiership favorites just prior to the season starting? Sure they've had injuries .......
So Ratten will do a lot better at Port where we have been able to get our best 22 on the park every week thanks to our superior fitness program.

.... What will Ratten bring to our club? .....
If he can bring Chris Judd with him I'd consider him for the coaching job.
