No way to Ratten.

Apart from any other reasons, as he said this morning.

He's been at the Carlton club for 24 years so his exposure to other influences and thinking is next to zero.

The PAFC needs a fresher mind with broad based experience(s).

So Ratten gets sacked and is as good as installed immediately as favorite for the Port job, because.....?

Well, we're Port and we should be expected to take any old reject who might be prepared to coach us....

.....And Ratten is from Carlton and, well, who in their right mind wouldn't want an ex-Carlton coach no matter how bad he might be.

I can't speak highly enough for Rocket!! And I can't say how tragic it was, for all of us, when we unceremoniously dumped him. I've never really doubted our Administration until that moment.

He brings a certain charisma, a real personality to the face of the club. We've always been a hard team to notice in Melbourne, but with him in control he tried his heart out to make us 'relevant'.

Before he took us up, people always forget that we were a list of 'potential' in some areas and utter garbage in others.

He extracted the ABSOLUTE BEST out of every-one of our players. He made our poor list look far, far better than it actually was. He was claiming we were top 4, before the football world had the opinion of us even escaping the BOTTOM 4.

And continued that opinion despite us having a shocking end to 2007 (injury, poor form, bad luck), that he turned POSITIVE where he deliberately 'put the defence into the fire' and played MAN on MAN and super-developed our backline into top 3 of the competition for years to come. He has an ability to consistently turn flawed rookies into star players.

To the few players he didn't get along with, they eventually left/were traded out and they haven't proven to be successful at all in the AFL.

Good luck in the future, and enjoy a great Rodney Eade era should you choose him for the future!!

Agree with other poster's concerns about Ratten but also wonder about the culture he allowed to develop there. Chris Judd is a bloody good footballer and may be a good on-field captain as in leading by example, but he is capable of some pretty unsportsman-like stuff as well.

Looking at the issues that developed at both WCE and Carlton, I'm not convinced about his off-field captaincy either.

Would definitely prefer Eade, Burns, Bassett etc. over Ratten.

I don't know if it's online but in today's paper Nathan Buckley endorsed Rodney Eade for the Port job in a round about way.

"I have spoken to Rocket, if only to offer support and make sure he understands that whatever he needs to do or wants to do, we're more than welcome for him to do".

"I think the main thing for me has been having that old head, with all due respect, to bounce things off - not just for me but for the assistant coaches, they go to him often".

No others are worthy
I noticed on AFL360 that David King was asked if he was in for the Port coaching job - he didn't dismiss it outright. He is good analytically, but I'm not sure of his results as an assistant at a couple of clubs (I think from memory).

Is he on the same level as Burns/Bassett/Cameron with an Eade senior coach ticket?

Gotta say that my observations of Eade's time at the Bulldogs from an outsider's perspective are consistent with what you describe and why I think he'd be a good fit for us.

We do desperately need to get respect back to the club. Some of that might be achievable with off-field appointments like Bucky as president, and most will require better on-field results. But there is also something to be said for having a no-nonsense, respected, mostly proven coach in charge of the playing group. The players need to believe fully in what they are doing. Draftees need to come to us believing that they will get a great opportunity to develop and excel in our system. Potential trade targets, hell even assistant coaches, the same. Eade would bring this quality IMO. Normally, I'm not one for outside perceptions being that important, but our brand and reputation have taken such a hit over the past 5-6 years that we need to consolidate our image nation-wide as a sound, reliable and professional institution. Whether you like him or not, Neil Craig seemed to do this during his time at the Crows and as your post indicates, Eade achieved this at the Bulldogs and before that at Sydney.

The other thing about your post that rings loudly for me, is that he got great results from a large chunk of the playing group and that he was able to turn the perception of the Bulldogs around from bottom four / hopeless to consistent finals threats. Some of that rubs off on the players, the fans and indeed the opposition. We could have had some different results in the past two years if the opposition feared/respected us a bit more. I'm sick of us looking in awe at other clubs and teams. Time for us to puff our chests out and take pride that we are setting benchmarks of excellence.

The thing about Carlton is that they will identify who they want - Malthouse - and go out and get him. No sub-committees. No special consultants. Just go and get your man.

Its pretty clear that Rocket is the best candidate out there. Kinda wish PAFC would go and do the same...

Ratten.....you have to be joking, this would be a worse move than Primus.
There is only two names that should be in the hat...Eade or Burns, the rest you can throw away!
For Gods sake don't duck this up Port

I'd take Don King, Rodney King, Martin Luther King, Billie-Jean King, King Arthur, King Kong or Wayne King before David King at the PAFC.

I'll give Ratten the benefit of the doubt, he didn't leave Carlton in a shit place like Eade did.
OK midfield based around a star nearing 30, no KPPs worth mentioning, a zillion flankers?

Not that I'm putting all that on Ratten, but IMO Carlton aren't in great shape to win premierships under any coach.

pretty much my thoughts exactly

dream scenario = eade/burns (unlikely)

next best - eade/bassett

then - burns/senior assistant (harvey, ratten, pagan, whoever)

after that - cameron, simpson, or another untried 1st timer with potential

dead last - ratten.

Yet most of your supporters want Rodney Eade? He's far more damaged a good than Ratten.
Brett Ratten took over a club with all the resources in the world, three No. 1 draft picks and Chris Judd. He took them to one semi final.

Rodney Eade took over one of the most underresourced clubs in the AFL, one No. 1 draft pick and no Chris Judd. He took them to three preliminary finals.

Did Lyon actually say that? Pretty poor if he did. I guess by saying he inherited a "basket case" it would make any level of success he has as appearing extra special and make him look a coaching genius.
Ross Lyon is a snake-oil salesman wanker of the highest order. He's Terry Wallace with a better list.
