Brett Ratten took over a club with all the resources in the world, three No. 1 draft picks and Chris Judd. He took them to one semi final.

Rodney Eade took over one of the most underresourced clubs in the AFL, one No. 1 draft pick and no Chris Judd. He took them to three preliminary finals.
And he managed to turn spuds into serviceable players

...Ross Lyon is a snake-oil salesman Moo of the highest order. He's Terry Wallace with a better list.
He might be that, but he gets blokes to play good defensive footy. Lyon was a dirty hard bastard when he played and he is a hard bastard of a coach. He's boring, his sides play boring footy, but he gets his blokes not to backdown.

Where is all the money for Hocking coming from? May as well put a tenner on Cahill.

OK midfield based around a star nearing 30, no KPPs worth mentioning, a zillion flankers?

Not that I'm putting all that on Ratten, but IMO Carlton aren't in great shape to win premierships under any coach.
I reckon Jamison and Waite are quality to be honest...

Ratten took over a club that had been perennial bottom dwellers. He took charge of a team that was copping regular 100 pt hidings. From the very first game he turned the team around. I'm not here to advocate for Ratten as your coach, as he definitely has weaknesses, but there's equally no point in undervaluing the contributions he made at the Blues. The sad thing is that next year, Ratten would have been better as coach than any other time previously. What he endured this year would have only made him stronger.

And I reckon Primus may still be in a job had we been compensated with similar players to Murphy, Gibbs and Kreuzer in consecutive years.

Why? Kreuzer hasn't really done much. Gibbs didn't do much this year and Murphy was out nearly half the season with injury. I am not comparing Ratten to anyone, but suggestions that anyone could have done what he did are just ignorant IMO.

The thing about Carlton is that they will identify who they want - Malthouse - and go out and get him. No sub-committees. No special consultants. Just go and get your man.

Its pretty clear that Rocket is the best candidate out there. Kinda wish PAFC would go and do the same...
Sadly given our financial position and the fact we have sacked our last two coaches while still under contract we need to be seen as showing due diligence even though the obvious is staring us in the face.

All 3 are absolute quality and a major cog in your line up. I'm not talking about this year in particular. We'd be much improved with players of that ilk...

Ive softened a little, but not sold at this stage.

Basically the amount of high picks and judd visy money he had to work with without nailing it is the concern given we have neither.

Murphy was great last year and average the year before from preseason hip surgery. Gibbs has been consistently good until this season. Krezuer has had nothing but drama since doing his knee. Nonetheless, given you were talking about Primus' sacking, I thought the year in which both coaches were sacked would be more relevant and really, Murphy had a bit part, while Gibbs and Kreuzer were really nothing special.

Ultimately, you can say the same about every coach. Would Bomber have won the flag with Geelong without Bartel, Scarlett & Chapman. Would Malthouse without Daisy, Sidebottom or Pendlebury? Just seems like a cop out to me that ignores too many facets of what these coaches do.

When all is said and done, I dont mind him. He's just not for us...
The thing that worries me about Ratten for Port more than his actual coaching is that Port are a "bad news" club at the moment and Ratten, despite being a former premiership player and captain at the Blues, was never really able to mobilize that supporter base to get behind him. I worry how he would fare in this regard at Port.

To me Carlton's real problems have been getting their key backs and forwards right ie they haven't. They have been stiff with injury, but to get into the top 4 and be a series contender they needed the right KPP's.

Waite's knee injury have stuffed them up, he isn't the player he was pre injury, but they haven't recruited the right blokes. Fevola being the dill that he is has stuffed them up as well, but they have tried Hampson, Kruezer, Warnock and Setanta as Key Forwards but they just aren't good enough to play there long term against the best sides.

They should have hung onto to Jacobs and given up one or both of Hampson and Warnock.

Their key backs haven't been big enough against the real big key forwards and they get monstered. Jamison is a good footballer but physically can't beat the big beast forwards. Same goes for Brett Thornton. Jeremy Laidler is another good player who probably isn't big enough and a long term injury has got him. Watson looks like a good size but he is still a few years away.

Ratten can coach, but some bad luck this year with injuries has hurt him. Do I want him at Port? Not in front of Eade. I thought he was pretty impressive at his presser today. Left the pressser to take the boys for training, that took a bit of guts.
