Movie The Irishman

It's a masterpiece that looks absolutely dreadful thanks to piss poor CGI, seriously it's this bad:
They spent millions and millions on the CGI, which is what blew out the budget. They lost me with the CGI when they gave Deniro blue eyes in his earlier years, for no apparent reason. WTF?

I would like to think I knew a fair bit about JH before watching the movie in my opinion they made him out to be a whining, complaining character almost a bitch at times, anyone get this side of the character?

Special mention Ray Romano was pretty good aswell.

Slightly better than the purple middle age eyes but yeah.

Felt more like one of Scorsese's religious films than his crime ones in it's contemplative sort of approach. I found this one eminently watchable and interesting but I was after a bit more flair. I also found the believability of the aging a bit hard to swallow. It probably worked a bit better for DeNiro in Once Upon a Time in America! Despite this I enjoyed the performances and found the story quite fascinating. Great seeing Joe Pesci and he put in a great performance I thought 7.5/10

I think BEEG has said it best

Enjoyable film that could have been better with a different stable of actors. Its not that the acting was terrible , it wasnt - it was quite good. Ray Romano and Joe Pesci and especially Steve Graham were very good.

De Niro played De Niro playing a goombah.

I felt as a bio-pic they could have focussed on a few years either side to convey a lot more and leave the actors ages less of a distraction

The real problem with putting a 35 year old head on a 75 year old body is the movement, when he was kicking the crap out of the store owner he kicked him the way your grandpa would kick someone, not like a man in his prime, it just looked off! A younger face for Pacino does nothing for his 79 year old hunch body either.

Long films like that are less about urinating and more about discomfort.

Indeed.

Just finished it, spread over 2 nights, from the comfort of my recliner, no freaking way I'm sitting through 3+ hours in a cinema, wouldn't walk right for a week.

Thought it was great once I got past the age issue, which took some doing and as pointed out above, the kicking scene was all sorts of ridiculous. But there's plenty to like here, Pesci especially good, looking forward to re watching it already.

If it didn't have the actors it did, reckon people like myself wouldn't have lasted the 3 hours.

The scenes in isolation were good, but put together as an coherent narative...especially over 3 hours? not IMO.

Was like the movie didn't know if it was a biopic or a condensed season of True Detective from the crook's side. The time jumps back and forward were overdone something shocking.

Seeing as it's based on real events, would have been better served being stretched out as a limited series or tightened up as film. As I said, the scenes in isolation were good but repeated themes throughout didn't really serve to push the narrative along, so the long runtime wasn't justified IMO.

This wasn't a horrible movie by any stretch, but felt more compelled to Google search the people the film is based on, rather than being glued to the TV.

So im 1.5hrs in - turned it off out of boredom - ill probably watch the rest later this week or next week. So slow and an 1.5 hrs in nothing has really happened. Im not holding out much hope for the last 2 hrs.

I dont get it most of the time (what ages are these blokes supposed to be at different times of the movie?)- when deniro's truck breaks down, how old is he supposed to be? Pesci calls him 'kid' yet de niro looks 50 haha, so dumb.

If you are going to cast a 70 yr old, you cant play him for all the parts - just looks stupid.

Scorsese is a gem, Goodfellas and The Wolf of Wall Street would be up there in my all time faves.

This one is boring and middling at best. I just didn't enjoy it. A shame given the build-up and expectations I had.

De Niro also moved far too nimbly for however old he was supposed to be in the epilogue scenes.

Having said that, people are placing far too much focus on CGI. A sign of the times, I suppose. Maybe Scorsese was right.

There's a simple rule with CGI, if it doesn't look right don't do it.

For me it was more the disjointed feel between their facial & vocal expression. The voice in many instances (old ailing actors) is just wrong for the facial CGI portrayed. It's not the bodily movement, but the voice. They aren't talking with the vigour and sharpness of middle-aged men.

If you've seen a few recent Pacino movies, you can hear what he was really like behind the face (and laughable hair). In his case, it actually helped his performance, shrouding his doddery reality a bit. In some other cases, it just feels mismatched and muddies things a bit. I didn't mind it too much with Pesci and Keitel, because they play sinister quiet types who keep fairly still, but in the case of De Niro it undermines his performance. It is a relief when we can just see him plain.

Like if you were casting an animated film, you wouldn't choose an actor of the vintage of Robert Duvall or Jack Thompson to play the fortysomething Dad. It just wouldn't sound right in most cases.

Underwhelming.

I'll expand a little. I didn't find it underwhelming for anything from a technical perspective, I just didn't find it a particularly interesting movie.

Maybe the straight out gangster genre is in a bit of a hiatus. I could watch the likes of the first two Godfathers and Goodfellas until the cows came home (I found Casino too long, but liked it) but this one just did nothing for me. Maybe it was my time working in Barwon Prison and the tendency of the media to glorify the lifestyle. I ended up watching over the end result and they really were dregs, nothing glamorous or romantic about it at all.

I liked it but wouldn't classify it as a classic or one of Scorsese's best movies. The characters even with CGI all looked old when they were suppose to be younger. Last 30 mins seemed a bit of waste of time.

All that said it's more likely to be better than any other dross that gets released these days and the acting was superb as you would expect from De Niro - Pacino and Pesci. Agree with other posters who said its hard to imagine De Niro as Irish.

Good movie worth watching and enjoying but not in the same class as The Departed - Goodfellas - Casino - Gangs of New York - Colour of Money.

I liked it, but yeah, about 5 or 6 Scorsese films I like more. The movie should've been made 10 years ago, cut down to 3 hours, and had livelier, explosive moments like in his old classics. Just because it's based on a true story doesn't mean it can't be over-dramatised a bit. Still, I was expecting a more subdued tone given their age.

I think the only scene that felt like an legit ‘Marty’ mob moment was the confrontation between Jimmy Hoffa and a beach clad Tony Pro.

Solid I thought. Frankly reckon De Niro seems like a pretty ordinary human being so it hurts me to say it but he was good in this and in Joker a few months back.

CGI was a bit obvious in some scenes but didn’t trouble me much. Seems absurd they would go to that much expense. I mean, Elias Koteas is a dead ringer for a younger De Niro, or any number of other young actors could have filled in. For what it’s worth I thought he never looked younger than 50 odd anyway.

Anyway, was worth a watch and it’s a lot better than a lot of the other Netflix exclusives which are often big budget misfires that couldn’t find a distributor. Pesci was great.

Do you know how many arseholes you get if you give fame, fortune and power to a 100 random people?
