4 hours is about the absolute limit in cinemas before your butt becomes dead tissue. I've sat through a couple 4 hour films in cinemas.

Muted expectations for this. My Scorsese ranking:

4. The Aviator 9/10
5. The King of Comedy 9/10
6. Goodfellas 9/10
7. The Departed 8.5/10
8. Casino 8/10
9. Shutter Island 8/10
10. The Last Waltz 8/10

11. Mean Streets 7.5/10
12. The Last Temptation of Christ 7.5/10
13. Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore 7.5/10
14. The Wolf of Wall Street 7.5/10
15. Life Lessons (New York Stories) 7.5/10
16. The Age of Innocence 7.5/10
17. Cape Fear 7.5/10
18. Bringing Out the Dead 7/10
19. Kundun 7/10
20. Hugo 7/10

21. Silence 7/10
22. Gangs of New York 7/10
23. New York, New York 6/10

Still need to see: Color of Money, Boxcar Bertha, Who's That Knocking at My Door, The Irishman

No. 8 through 22 are fairly close in quality, so I regard that whole chunk as standard Scorsese, my typical level of expectations.

You do realise by all accounts from those who have seen it, The Irishman is a ******* masterpiece, and Scorsese’s best work since Goodfellas?

Strongly encourage you to see Color of Money....underrated gem 👍🏻

I'll believe it when I see it, but count me skeptical for now. I'd be happy with another 7-8/10. There are some reviewers who'll praise anything Scorsese from experience, or pull out the "best since Goodfellas" tag which usually means they haven't seen everything since Goodfellas.

I do love The Hustler, I expect I'll enjoy Color of Money well enough when I eventually get the opportunity.

Color of Money is one of those that’s slipped under the radar in Scorsese’s body of work, but just on Paul Newman’s performance of an aging but still wily Eddie Felson, it’s easily in my top ten.

Glad to see we agree on The Aviator. If you haven't already, I recommend After Hours, which is one of his most impressive films.

I've found Color of Money fairly hard to track down, which is weird given it was a sequel to a famous film, had a Best Actor Oscar, and also Tom Cruise during his early stardom.
 
Watched it on Saturday night at Lido in Hawthorn.

There was applause after it but that was mainly from the crowd behind us they were drinking just of beer. Never been in a theatre with such a noisy crowd before. Anyway, thought it went for way too long and me and my partner were sleeping in each other at stages throughout the movie.

It was good, but not great. Don’t know why it’s odds are so short to take out best picture Oscar.

This might be better on Netflix if it’s broken up into 3 episodes.

While I love all the actors, Pacino, De Niro, Pesci...I don’t think they worked, they looked way too old for the roles they were meant to portray. Were they meant to be in their 20’s during part of the film, because they came off being in their 50’s. I think younger actors would have worked better.

I don’t think De Niro as a hit man worked either. He just didn’t seem like someone you’d be scared of or would do the horrendous things he did.
the scene where he beat up the shop keeper was not realistic at all. He looked like an old man that could barely lift his leg to kick or stomp the guy in the street. Lucky he had guns in the remainder of the film I guess.

The film tried to be part comedy, part gangster film. The comedy seemed like it worked judging by the crowd reaction in our cinema but when you think about the subject matter, the gruesome murders and the shady characters back in that era, I don’t know what there is to laugh about.

Not one of Scorsese’s best.

Any Best Picture odds at this point would be purely speculative. At least a third of the potential candidates wouldn't have even been seen yet. I think Irishman and OUATIH will likely miss out on most of the big nominations, or at least not contend.

Marriage Story and The Two Popes are sounder prospects for mine at this stage. If they start to gather some momentum, they'll be hard to stop. As long as the Baumbach is toned down enough for general audiences, that might be his moment, whilst the Two Popes will push hard for an Actor win and Supp. Actor nomination, and likely do well at the Globes.
 
10/10 for me. Had no qualms sitting near 4hrs in a cinema seeing the best of the best put on an absolute show. Pesci was the most impressive i thought. Real measured, restrained performance but with one look, could let deniros character know he wanted blood. Everyone brought their A game and i loved Steven Graham as Tony Pro. Sits comfortably next to Goodfellas and Casino.

Cant wait to watch again when out on Netflix.
