Obviously you know a lot more about the situation, but just to clarify:
He wants to play, but doesn’t really want to train? So he feels like a place in the side is a right, and not a privilege?
It just makes it harder to understand considering he’s only down to training on a very limited basis, time granted away to train on his own and all that. If that was the case, surely he’d want to get down to training more and more each week, until he’s full time again and ready for selection.
The fact that the opposite is happening tells me it’s already completely over.
I started writing something very similar but didn't post (That's not at all to say that you shouldn't have!).
I definitely agree, but addiction is a funny thing.
Sure, the social media posts are all smiles, but I can certainly see a world where he feels lonely, lost, sad, angry...
A spiral (be it up or (more often of course) downwards) can be very hard to pull out of.
There's a very real chance that he wants to play footy, but the dopamine keeps saying, "hit me!".
(100% agree, that there has to come a point where we cut ties tho).
