The more I think about this situation the more it feels like Jamarrah considers this to be his gap year.

But instead of doing as I and countless others have done before we become somewhat fully formed adults by debauching our way through foreign climes. He's doing much the same but in the full glare of a nonplussed football club, media pack and the insatiable appetite of people who cant wrap their head around how he seems on the precipice of throwing it all away.

The last of which dont seem to be able to factor in the reality that he just may not want it enough.

It shouldn't really come as a surprise that a guy who has spent most of his life on a rail towards being a professional footballer. Should at some point rebel against it and take time to assess whether or not he actually wants to spend the rest of his life actually doing that. Or whether he should leave it all behind and become a footnote in a very long line of unfulfilled talent lost to the game for the quiet life of a jobbing civilian where in time nobody cares what he does or who he does it with. Like the rest of us.

The only thing that seems certain is that the ball is now entirely in his court.

Id still bank on his returning to the game.

Whether thats at the Bulldogs or not remains too be seen.

Like, sure, not a lot to disagree with here, but it begs the obvious question of the fact that he's getting paid.

Jamarra's very entitled to retire and not get paid and then come out of retirement and get paid.

Is it a footy club? It's a business/work place that engages in a business a lot of people are interested in buying into.

I grapple with the traditional club being super-imposed on what this actually is. A bloody good movie with paid actors. We have our favourites.

It's quite an interesting topic for thought. What actually is professional sport? It's a heady mixture of money, entertainment, allegiances, loyalties, hope, vicarious fulfilment .... sport .... that evolved from a traditional club setting, yet is far from that now.

It's quite an interesting topic for thought. What actually is professional sport? It's a heady mixture of money, entertainment, allegiances, loyalties, hope, vicarious fulfilment .... sport .... that evolved from a traditional club setting, yet is far from that now.

It is, and there's quite a distance between the perceptions of the sport/club/players by the fans, and by those playing and organising. Fans demand the same level of loyalty towards a club by players, coaches etc, as they themselves have, but will never get, which is often frustrating and upsetting. Commitment by players to a club can only ever be temporary, as the club will not hesitate to discard them if they want to. It's the fans that want to keep the "traditional" aspect alive and those involved pay lip service to it to keep the fans happy.

Yes I agree. I choose to surrender to the irrational nature of following a team. Nailing one's colours as it were. But I know I'm doing it.

The players, in my view, are employees who all we can ask of is that they put their best foot forward and do their best as long as they wear the colours. Dunkley cops a bit of stick occasionally but I have no axe to grind with him. He played for us to the last game and he's respected as a professional, as he should be.

There are others in our recent past who don't come close to that standard and are unworthy.

I'm curious about this. I'm more positive about aspects of the situation, mostly that he's now distant from the club and it allows each party to go about their challenges without interfering with one another. I support the Bulldogs, not Jamarra the individual, so from a clubs point of view I think him being distanced is going to have positive results on the club as a whole, but that doesn't do a lot for Jamarra the individual.

I still want the best for him, for sure, and if he comes back into the club eventually then that's great - but surely it's a bit too early for there to be any great advancements in his own personal situation?

He isn't a bad person he is just dumb and young long way to come back from but he isn't potting the club or the playing group so can come back from it with time

I too Support the club firstly and most greatly but I also support our people and young people more generally.
I don't think we can expect any news or significant steps involving both Marra and club.
However he has made significant strides in the last three weeks and I for one don't down play how hard those initial steps are to take and he certainly has a long ways to go. He will have many more difficult times ahead and it's a long road but atleast it's underway.

Yeah as per my post was referring to the AFL's sessions. Great to hear he's attending them all

A scenario. I'm keen on your thoughts.

1. JUH tells his management team that he is committed to the WB and motivated to being the best possible player he can be in the AFL for as long as his body and mind allows him.

2. His management team provides an update to Baines, Watson-Wheeler, Bevo & Luke Darcy that his client is committed to playing out his career for the WB at a highly professional standard.

3. A discussion is held between JUH's management team and the key four figures mentioned above about the next steps involved in allowing JUH to return through the front doors of Whitten Oval.

4. With all his teammates and coaches in the Whitten Oval auditorium, Bevo addresses the room and provides them with an update in relation to the positive steps forward JUH has taken. He briefly touches on the conversations he's had with JUH's management team.

5. With JUH waiting outside behind closed doors, Bevo invites the former #1 draft pick into the room. This is likely to be welcomed with a round of applause.

6. JUH then addresses his teammates and coaches, firstly taking ownership of his previous poor work ethic. He explains he now realises how much everyone in this room means to him, how much the footy club means to him, and how much he loves being an AFL player at the Bulldogs. He mentions that he realises he will have to earn back any respect he has lost and will be super motivated to earn that respect back.

7. JUH not only returns to committing himself to every training session, functions, social events, etc, but he works his ass of like he has never done previously. He does extras. He even becomes a role model for the first and second year players. Takes the time to provide them with feedback and advice even in his own time. He shows that he cares for his younger teammates and this can simply be messaging them after a game, congratulating them on a great performance and telling them that he's proud of them. He even limits his social media use and most definitely doesn't post or upload anything controversial again.

I'm almost certain that if it plays out like that, any burnt bridges that may currently exist will be rebuilt.

While the above may seem unlikely, it's certainly possible. We can only hope.

It isn't hard. The lad has to get fit, earn his spot, take the odd speckie but when that isn't working, chase, fight, tackle, stop pointing at others, get in, win the ball and give it to others.
