Still think we should have sent him to the draft and let him end up wherever.

Sure, that makes perfect sense in the world of bigfooty where we invariably overvalue players and demand all sorts of ridiculous draft compensation. But trades tend to bend back towards what is achievable given the constraints placed upon teams with their draft hand. Of course Geelong could've strengthened their hand and sweetened the deal. But they knew months in advance that Smith had agreed to their terms thus removing all incentive to trade in good faith.

Im pretty sure that the most common refrain in the post trade wash up across bigfooty when elite talent moves clubs is that one party got hosed and the other made out like a bandit.

Top end trades are rarely equitable

I hope Hynes has a great career but it was so far off Smiths value, we could have sent a message.

The message would've been completely hollow though. Clubs just cannot sit out opportunities to get into the top end of the draft to prove a point to recalcitrant players and the opportunist clubs that they have been colluding with. Neither party could give a **** about our principled stance. They'd just see it as an opportunity to weaken an opponent who stupidly decided to forego a valuable 1st round draft pick.

We made the best of a shit sandwich and moved on.

If only our fans could do the same when it came to Bailey Smith.

Lets revisit this at the end of the season when Zac Butters nominates the Bulldogs and we don't offer Port anything like fair compensation for one of the best mids in the game.

Look at what Geelong demanded for Ratagolea and Tim Kelly. Somehow they always have leverage to get better value no matter what the scenario.

The cats have screwed so many clubs over there should be pact to not deal with them. It would force them into fair trades. I have heard the dogs will not deal with them gain unless the deal strongly favours us.

A phone call would have already been made to Port to understand what they would want in a trade scenario. Butters will only ask for a trade if the club can get it done.

3 firsts and $1.5M/yr is a lot of resources into one player. I'd be stoked to have him but that cost makes me nervous
How much we are paying him is not really an issue. We'll be paying Bont more. It's the trade capital required.

Not sure what the trade price will be but perhaps a couple of players (either directly or onshipping picks - perhaps JUH, Garcia or someone else) will lessen the blow.

Think he’ll definitely play AFL again but I’m just hoping it’s with us…
Morris mentioned the Swans again.
Its just shit tbh He is our number 1 pick a young key forward that we develop in our academy and he is contracted till 2026 where not gonna give him up for nothing

At a guess, he did his rehab in Sydney there could be a correlation and they are desperate for a star forward. Love him stay but would hate to get screwed again on a trade.

Pretty sure he went to Qld not Sydney for rehab

I'm agnostic on this.

I've heard rumours from other sources, as probably many here have. I'm not prepared to repeat them because they are just that ... rumours. Unsubstantiated.

Who knows what's correct? Some here might. Most don't. It's obviously complex, unusual. Maybe unique. For my part, I'd prefer to hold fire until there are some official announcements but I can understand the angst of fans when it appears very possible we will lose a highly talented young player who we put years into as a teenager and effectively mortgaged our 2020 draft hand for. This coming right on top of the disturbing Bailey Smith saga.

The plain fact is we can't restrain ourselves from speculating, commenting, fulminating. Pointing fingers. There were over 160 posts in the 10 hours between 9:30 and 7:30pm today and I reckon 90% of them were about JUH. One every 3-4 minutes. And that's just in the Trades/List Management thread. There would have been plenty elsewhere I'm sure. And the footy media remains latched on so there's no escaping it.

It's making this board borderline unreadable.

Since we're so obsessed here's an overdue thread to let it all out. And hopefully to allow us some breathing space to discuss other topics in our regular threads.

Fire away. It'd be nice if you could keep all your JUH discussion to this thread.
