If that was the case we'd have little to lose by playing hard ball and letting him sit in the 2s next year

People need to see this situation for what it is. It’s a bloke that packed it in with the club a long time ago and has been having a gap year and a club that has put him in the too hard basket and will take a salary dump to move him on.

He’s a Connors client. It’s really not so different from Smith’s gap year last year. He’s probably going to get back to playing AFL at his next club from the start of pre-season and the trade value will look like peanuts very quickly.

Unfortunately, there is still one other remaining Connors client of note at the club and that is the only Tassie kid that hasn’t extended at their current club, Ryley Sanders.

Agree with the above.

Fortunately, Sanders ain’t the next Bont. He might be a ‘good’ player, but it is pretty clear to me his skill set is limited. As I said last year, he reminds me of Mitch Wallis before he broke his leg. A good footballer, but not a rockstar.

Take the Sir Alex Ferguson approach in the JUH case send him to a club you won’t be competing against in finals and finals spot and strengthen the opposition too much eg Westcoast Eagle not Geelong type

Just accept we are going ro get bent over for a contracted player ... lets send a draft pick with that salary dump

He is believed to be on 800-900k next year. Obviously whoever gets JUH next year pays the full salary.

In saying that, St Kilda didn’t want him last year after looking under a few rocks, ST KILDA!!

I cannot think of a team who would take him on- a bloke of big coin who hasn’t played in a year and is rumoured to be in all sorts of bad stuff with very unlucky cars etc.

I think there is every chance that no one will be chasing him next year.

I think given the lack of key forwards available someone would take a chance, but we’d be talking about the very late pick in return.

Yes, I think accepting that the trade return will be peanuts is better than sucking down hopium that he’s coming back or the club he’s going to will volunteer a great pick for him. The latter two are just setting yourself up for disappointment.

I prefer to see the club as something other than a doormat for outgoing players

Players not Father and sons who have signed contracts 3 years or greater over the last couple of years:
Richards
Naughts
Bont
Weightman
English
Dale
Williams

All of our father sons

Buss and Garcia backed themselves in

In fact all of the top 11 in last years best and fairest all at some stage were on a 3 plus year contract.

Yes we have lost 2 quality players in the last 3 seasons one of whom was a premiership player.

But to say we are a doormat for outgoing players is utter rubbish

We will view it as a salary dump and send him to Sydney for not much. The writing on the wall is at Bailey Smith levels.

You lose the leverage when you’re actively pushing a player out.

Collingwood and Treloar, us publicly “sacking” and trading Stringer two relevant examples.

If we were serious about being willing to keep him in 2026 this might change things, but if the whole footy world knows we’re trying to get rid of him…there will be some very disappointing returns coming back. And I think we all know with Bevo running the shots, once that bridge is burnt, you don’t come back.

I don’t expect us do well with JUH as an asset, the circumstances are bizarre though. In most cases you’re better off trading a player with a foot out the door before they’re out of contract - but it might on paper be the better play? If the club is willing to eat that 800k after paying him that much to do nothing this year.

Tbh I think the salary is inconsequential. It's not like we gonna land any big money recruits that we could use that money for. Might as well pay JUH to go do his boxing training instagram stuff.
This is partly true. If we don't land a big fish this year like Butters then it's unlikely we need JUH's $800K next year. And he only has one year anyway so there is only 1 year's salary to dump.

You are missing the point.. potentially pushing 2 quality players out and accepting other team's scraps. One of those players becomes one of the best players in their team, the other being JUH who could end up the same.

Hard to point to too many teams that have lost similar quality. Not many numbers yes, but high quality.

Or we re-adjust current players salaries, like Richards, Bont, Naughton and Darcy - who we know are hanging around, to be more front loaded, giving us more room to target a CHB (or Butters) in the years to come. Freeing up 900k I imagine would give us room to more in 1-2 years.

Paid a lot for JUH and this board is putting him in the too hard basket on unsubstantiated rumours. Noone here has any idea what is going on but plenty pretend they do.
Doggy - do you see JUH pulling on the boots for the dogs next year?

JUH for Butters seems fair. Win win. Get it done Sam.

PS I am a bonafide Bulldogs supporter who recently got a 15 year trophy. I see they were given out to people who hadn’t visited BF for 15 years. I didn’t realise it was that long since I was last here. Anyway that is probably why you don’t recognise me but I am a legit poster

Your point is rubbish. No player has been pushed out. We actually picked up as good a quality in Trealor who was pushed out

Stringer and Smith weren't pushed out? Regardless of reasoning

You're rewriting history now
Stringer yes, and that really bit us hard didn't it.

Smith absolutely not, a narcissistic who wanted to promote himself.

Your rewriting not only history but seem to revel in victimhood

Wrong answer again.

Offer to Smith was 2 years. If we honestly wanted to keep him we'd have offered longer. Perhaps look at this board during that time with that being the prevailing thought

We need to get JUHs salary off the books. $800k may end up paying for someone like Silvagni who will actually contribute to the team and we don't need 3 A grade KPFs anyhow. Not sure how Darcy, Naughton and JUH would be any better than what we are seeing right now. Especially if we trade in a small forward and Weightman gets fit.

It's the sunk cost fallacy to suggest that we can't trade him given we used an entire draft hand to get him and he MIGHT be AA in the future. Yes, we probably won't get a lot for him but we would be making $800k sapace in the salary cap. More than worth it given there is no guarantee of anything.

I'd rather McNeil in the team rather than JUH. He may be limited but at least he is busting his ar$e for the team.
