JUH was a kid from an impoverished Indigenous township who moved to the big smoke, became comparatively incredibly wealthy, and suddenly had huge media pressure on him at 18. He went off the rails and hasn’t been able to get back onto them yet. It’s an enormous amount to deal with and I don’t think him going off the rails is about his character.

Its a bit much to make it sound like the first time he had contact with the big smoke was when he joined the Dogs, he boarded at Scotch College from Year 9 so probably spent 90% of his school time socializing and hanging out in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne before he joined the Dogs 3 or 4 years later.

JUH has never said a bad word about the club as far as I'm aware. I think it was always his intention to stay but its likely that we've told him that the situation is untenable - fool me once etc.

I don't care that he's become a "distressed asset" or what he cost us. He's a person, not a commodity. His options at this point are Gold Coast or retire. I wish him well for his life and football career except when he's playing against us. It doesn't have to be a toxic breakup. Smith I will always despise because he treated our club with contempt at every stage of his exit.

One other thing is that an entire year out of the game and not training at that age is hard to come back from. Not like he was in rehab and committing every day, attending team activities etc

Cam McCarthy looked like he would be a gun at GWS but after sitting out for a season he never showed even a glimpse of the talent in display before the break

I probably wouldn’t have had a major problem with Max Holmes dressing up as me on Mad Monday, but I did have a problem with Smith’s social media post, and judging from the response that’s followed, I wasn’t alone.

I'm about 80% of the way there on this view.

The other 20% does hold a grudge against someone who, whilst having obvious problems that he was dealing with, could still manage to maintain a very active social life and commit to a regular fitness regime outside of the club.

I just can't reconcile that with not showing up for work and continuing to accept a wage from the club.

I'll continue trying to work on that 20%.

Personally I think most of the excuses players give for leaving are just a smokescreen for one of 3 basic things : money, getting a game, or pissing off your teammates.
