At what stage do we give him a deadline and say sign by this date otr we will start talking to other clubs about trades.
******** that.

If he 'chooses' Carlton, we're screwed over. I would be very patient with him, we will eventually get what we want.

Thats if he wants to play for the blues. How long do you wait? The trade period finishes in 15 days.

You can see what's happening now – media hype about other clubs circling with outrageous offers, the list grows to Carlton, Collingwood and the Kangaroos.

All the while his manager’s telling Geelong he can get up to $150,000 elsewhere.

Why sign now? Pressure is building on Geelong by the day and Bartel has the trump card up his sleeve - other clubs bidding for him, in particular Carlton with first pick in the PSD. It’s not even as though Geelong can tell him, “fine, that’s it, we’ll see what trades we can get for you” because he can just walk into the arms of Carlton through the PSD.

From what Brian Cook said the offer is the last one. We are at 99.98% of the salary cap. There is no more money left, unless we trade a few guys off for draft picks, which I doubt.

Absolutely!

It's so frustrating when we have other blokes like Joel Corey who are so committed to the club that they sign without fuss and without hesitation mid-season when he could get far more on the open market at this time of year.

It's a lot just for a 2 year contract. I understand it's the logical thing for a club to do these days - sign a player for 2 years and not 3 or 4 - but we're only going to have the same problem when he's 23-24 and in his prime. Especially if he performs as expected.

I imagine we'd still have a bit of wiggle room in the cap, but Cook would rather make people believe we're at our absolute limit.

I agree with the final offer thing with Bartel. We can't let his manager extort more from us, if our offer isn't enough for him then hurry up and tell us so we can work out a trade.

I will be gutted if Jimmy leaves but agreed, hurry up and make your mind up.

Ling, Chappy, Corey etc re-signed with minimum fuss. Yes, Jimmy's an important part of our team but I'd argue that the other 3 are just as important.

My gut feeling is that he'll stay: I think his manager's trying to milk everything he can from GFC by bandying the names of other clubs around, but that once the club is firm and final on their offer, he'll accept. He better.

150,000 on top of what. The way I look at these deals is a pecenatge of the SCap because the dollars are just too unreal for me to gauge what some one is worth.Worth is realtive to the total pool of dollars and that is around 6.0M
How much of our TPP, our SCap would we be prepaired to pay Jimmy?.No more than 5.5% for mine($330,000), that would have around our top 12 players at around 66% of the cap.Basically it would leave only 2.0M for the rest, barely enough, probably borderline. If Jimmy must go , he must go but its more important that we keep our payment schedule fair so that in 1,2 or 3 years somebody doesnt get pushed out the door because of excessive deals

What we must aviod is losing him for zilch to Carton.

The more this thing drags out the more we should be realising that JB will not be part of our team next year and will probably end up at Carlton/Collingwood, we should be working out now what we are to get for him and not end up like PA with Nick Stevens and get SFA!

Each day that passes makes me more nervous...
I initially didn't believe that the Jim would leave....but now I'm starting to doubt whether Captain Courageous is going to be running around in the hoops this year... :(
i honestly think theyll up the ante with what hes asking for and therefore other players will be pushed out or is everyone else contracted,if so i think hell leave

I couldn't see our club doing that.

Brian Cook is the best in the business, he's not going to cause problems for the club just to accomodate Jim Bartel.

If it was Gary Jnr. then perhaps he'd make those sacrifices, but not for Bartel.

If the club folds and pays Bartel 50-100k more than Corey and Kelly, what message does this send out to his team mates who signed with a minimum of fuss?

It is very divisive and it is starting to pis$ me off.

Carlton have #1 pick so Jim may have no say in where he goes (should he nominate for the draft that is)
It won't get to that. If he goes he'll have a club in mind and then we'd have to get the deal done, ala the Colbert deal.

Exactly.

I trust Cook to stand firm on this, he has to.

I dont know why are you are all getting so worked up, there is no way he will leave. For gods sake it is just a bit of contractual wrangling and he has every right to get the most he can get. It will all be sorted out soon enough. Calm down, all of you.

How are we to know that for sure?

You can't blame supporters for getting anxious when one of your best young talents hasn't signed.
