I recall Dermie running through a Demons bloke at Waverley one day and I'm not sure if he played another game. Maybe he did.....maybe he just wasn't very good. Still, it was a big hit.

Was tagging Platts I think....Dean Chiron?

Tony Modra was never the same after Worsfold's gutless hit.

On a gutless scale how would you rate Woosha's eyes-on-the-footy-running-back-with-the-flight effort againts Ricciuto's shoulder/head hit on an unsuspecting Kemp? Hint - I think the discrepancy in the modern MRP assessment would be about 6-8 weeks..

Dipper on Kevin Walsh.

Fans went from not being overly enamoured with Walsh to absolutely loving the bloke..and he finished with over 200 games and representing Victoria - made his career.

Dipper on Alan Stoneham.

Sadly for Alan, Dipper's hit on him 1983 probably ended what had been a pretty good career at Footscray and Essendon.

The Breust incident is one the AFL needs to address as clubs are holding players back on the bench, then allowing them to enter the arena when the ball is in the area. It is a very dangerous practice, and thankfully Breust wasn't seriously injured.

Totally agree, very dangerous, Bruest had no idea someone ran off the i/c, thought he was in the clear, and was the only reason he was running with the flight of the ball.

Hall on Staker
I don't understand this one. Staker left the Eagles after the Hall hit, went to the Lions and then had his best ever season from an SC output perspective. It's probably perception that he's finished because he hasn't played in over a year due to a knee reco, so it's a case of out of sight, out of mind. But it's certainly not from the Hall incident.

Gia on Kosi really jumps at me because I really rated him before he got the shizzle knocked out of him

Plenty of nominations for Knocks that destroyed a players career. Any that made a player?

I dare argue Jarrad Harbrow's ridiculous hit on Jordan Lewis! Seems to be playing career best footy as of 2011

I thought the same when I saw Staker's name. I also remember his debut season at Brisbane being career best, Barry probably made him more infamous but the ACL definitely did more damage to his footy career.

Harbrow on Lewis was the most sickening I've seen live. being at the ground, the sound that came from that collision was ridiculous. I was on level 3 and it was still really loud.
Amazed he came back on to the ground after that.

John Greening is an obvious one - albeit done to death. Neil Sachse ended up in a wheelchair. There are the 2 that come to mind first - liteally career destroying. Greening came back but aside from a great comeback game was never close to the player he was before the hit and has had issues ever since.

Duncan Write's hit on John Somerville ended his own career. He never played another game being dumped by Collingwood and I believe the umpire never got another senior game either.

A few outside the AFL.

Grave Danger was known for his work on the ground.

Also there was a young West Perth ruckman, all legs and arms who came across Stephen Hooper, the number 1 draft pick, albeit average and the young West Perth ruckman ended up a crumpled mess.

Shed no tears for the young West Perth ruckman though. His football career career over, a young Basil Zempilas entered TV broadcasting and can now be seen on the football coverage earning significantly more than if he played 200 games of WAFL football.

Hooper got Basil in the throat , nearly destroyed his larynx . Speaking of Basil's , Basil Campbell of South Freo was a human wrecking ball , also remember when the supposedly soft Graham Moss destroyed Ron Boucher , Boucher was never his bullying self again after that .

Ben Johnson knocked out Daniel Bell cold in 2007, round 19 I think. Bell never really seemed to recover, which is a shame because he looked to be developing into a pretty good player.

Lewie reckons the only thing that hurt after that hit was his shoulder. True story.

Greening, Sachse the obvious ones, done to death, a young North bloke by the name of Brian Johnson (I think) lost sight in one eye thanks to an incident in the 60s.

Milburn on SOS, don't think it influenced either's career as SOS was probably going to retire anyway but Milbrun ended up going another 10 years - the Carlton fans wanted his blood when he knocked SOS out.

And well... Johnny Bourke. Got his name out there by doing this but cost him 10 years of footy.

Scott Direen was a solid young backman for the Swans in the mid 90's, probably the best I've seen in bringing the ball back in after a behind. Brilliant kick. He was cleaned up, fairly, by Mark Merenda at Waverley in '96 after a hospital pass from Troy Gray left him vulnerable. He got back later in the year but was NEVER the same player, moving to Norwood to finish his career in the SANFL a few years later...

From One In A Hundred, the diary of the 1996 season...

Sydney defender Scott Direen is kept in hospital for observation after suffering spinal concussion during the previous day's match against Richmond at Waverley Park.

Anyway, Krummel, Direen incidents and a lot more here...

I was on level 2, only a few rows away from where the two clubs officiandos sit, and when Lewis went down(the sound was horrible, and the crowd gasped), there were both Hawks and Dogs fans yelling out "Stop the game! Stop the game!".
I don't know why it took the umpires so long to call a stop to play, even a blind man could've known that Lewis was in serious trouble.
