What do you consider serviceable?

I would say 30 goals a year or 1.4 goals a game is serviceable. He's not that far off that now. Fingers crossed he reaches 40 goals a season.

Plenty of top teams have 1 or 2 players that kick the majority of their goals and then rest kick in the 20's and under. I think our best bet as a team is to have a more even spread.

Lots of midfielders on those lists as well. I'd be expecting Fyfe and maybe even Bennell (if he plays enough games)to be in our top five goal kicker tbh.

1.4 goals is serviceable for a small forward which all the guys on those lists are.

if anything it shows me there is only space for 1 tall forward to be kicking goals and they need to be kicking 2-3 a game.

It'd be great if Tabs could kick 1-2 goals a game but he tends to have a blinder, kicking 3, and then do nothing for the next 2+ games. His ability is obviously there but consistency is definitely not.

Taberner has all the tools. It just may "click" for him. He is currently not in my best 22 however history is littered with players that all of a sudden come good. Realising that you belong at the level should not be understated.

if you look at recent history there aren't that many players who suddenly come good. If you look at the successful forwards of recent history the only example would be Josh Kennedy as someone who struggled but came good.

Tab training form is so hard to predict , one day I would put him in my best 22, another day I will trade him if he got any value. I put him to not sure specimen. Don't mind kersten play ahead of him , if today training is the Tab he bring to the table.

I don't think we can expect Tabs to succeed as our primary tall forward target. He is 199cm and 97kg so he's a big boy and therefore will help stretch opposition defences - especially if he's teamed with Apeness. A forward line with those two and Cam Mac presents some interesting match ups for an opposition coach.

If you have Sonny, Ballas and Fyfe in the mix as well, then I think kicking a winning score is solely dependent on the volume and quality of supply.

Tabs dragging one of the two tallest defenders up the wings to free up McCarthy sounds like a good use for him. Apes takes the other tallest defender, leaving Macs to size up better on a 6'2 - 6'4 defender. Otherwise Macs is getting ragdolled by Rance or the like. Meanwhile, Tabs gets many of his contested marks on the wings anyway so provides a good option for bringing the ball forward.

I hope Tabs doesn't become the Mayne type in that he shows promise, has one good year that we all hang our hat on then spends 3/4 years not living up to expectations.

we used to always say that about Mayne "he'll take the pressure off Pav and draw the defender away" it never worked. See the 2013 GF.

Based on the top teams there is space for one tall fwd and one medium agile forward. I don't think Tabs has a spot.

So you're definition of a serviceable tall is 2-3 goals a game.

Let's average that out to 2.5 goals a game or 55 goals a season.

So you saying Tabs has to be in the top 6 goal scorers in the league to be classed as serviceable? Is that what you mean? Because top 6 in the league is star territory in my book.

Freo haven't had someone kick over 50 goals for a few years now. But for Tabs to be serviceable he will have to buck that trend straight away now that he's our number one?

All he needs to do is keep improving, and make sure he is doing enough so that the opposition backline can't leave him to double team McCarthy or whoever. I'm confident he'll kick 30+ and I think that will be seen as a good thing.

Mayne is 188cm though, if Tabs plays to his strengths, multiple long leads, his height, fitness, should create space
behind him for the other forwards to operate closer to goal.
Lets wait and see how our twin towers go before putting the boots in.

if he wants to play for us long term he needs to be able to produce those numbers since we should be a top 8 side .

If we want him to get to those numbers he has to play AFL regularly. It won't happen overnight or in one season. We have to hope that he improves every year which he has, and in the meantime is serviceable as a tall forward (30-35 goals).

How long do we wait for that good year?
This year and next year, yes Tab sometime erratic but until he reach 25 year old , is very hard to know whether he can make it or not.

We need to keep some perspective - Tabs was a rookie draft pick. He's 23 years old, he's played 45 games, kicked 41 goals and he's a work in progress. Last year he played in a team that struggled and that almost exclusively kicked to the other marking target (Pav).

I don't think Tabs will ever be a star but he could be a good second tall that might kick 30-35 goals a season. We will have to play a back up ruckman and looking at training Tabs won't be it. The most likely ruckman/forward is Apeness. Cam Mac and Kersten are mobile forwards who can play tall but aren't the guys we want competing one out with gorilla sized KPD.

Cam Mac is a lock. I expect Apeness will play as the second ruckman, I reckon Tabs will get first crack as the other tall. Given Kersten's interrupted pre-season, he might have to force his way in via Peel. Tabs and Kersten are probably competing for one spot.

Agree with all of that :thumbsu:

Only thing I'd add is that Tabs often managed to put himself in space for an uncontested mark and the ball was delivered to a double teamed Pav.
New forwards, new strategies and structures, can't see the point in suggesting a developing Tabs won't be in the mix.

I think you are correct about the timing, no coincidence we drafted Strnadica as a rookie. We have invested heavily into key positions, the pressure for spots, depth
to cover injury, has never been better, If only we had the choice in 2013.
Also Apeness has proven to be injury prone, sure Tabs is no superstar, I still hope he becomes like JPod at Geelong.

I think Kersten is comfortably more talented then Taberner. Taberner would not have got any games at Geelong imo. Taberner being a great back up option for injuries is a win from a rookie draft pick.

I disagree with comparison kersten vs Tab . both offer different value .much depend on set up.
