Ruck - Hannath, Sandi, Griffin, Clarke, Moller
Ideally you should have 3 rucks with a good age spread plus maybe 1 rookie.

Hannath should be delisted, we don't have another ruck under 25 and we have two rucks 30 or older.

Then we have been reported looking at Luenburger. Surely these are not serious, as adding a ruck makes no sense. Ideally I would like to trade two of the rucks out to create some list space and then draft a young ruck.

All these players are trying to play in 1 position, and Sandi will always get first crack.

The only one of htese guys that has potential as a forward is Moller and he is 1 year away at best.

KPD's - Silvagni, Johnson, Dawson, Smith, A Pearce.

5 players trying to fit into 2-3 positions. If we draft one this year, then we have the balance correct. Some concerns on quality, but this is ok.

KPF's - Pavlich, Apeness, Taberner
Ideally we should be playing two key forwards and a ruck\fwd and we have 3 players to choose from.

I do not understand how a professional club can find itself in this position. We have 2 rucks too many, and are two KPF's short.

Playing Griffin or Clarke as a forward has worked to some extent but this is just hiding a massive hole in our list.

Solution

Trade out 1 or 2 of the 4 rucks (not counting Moller). If you trade out 2, draft a young ruck.

Copy the crows 2011 trade period:

2011 - Josh Jenkins traded by Essendon for pick No.31 (Jackson Merrett); Lewis Johnston traded by Sydney for Tony Armstrong and pick No.35 (Daniel Markworth) and No.68 (on-traded to St Kilda for Beau Wilkes); Tom Lynch traded by St Kilda for pick No.37 (Jack Newnes)

We simply must pick apart other clubs list, and offer more cash to KPF's and Forwards who can ruck, not rucks who can stand in the forward line.

Key Back: (at round 1 next season)
Michael Johnson - 31
Zac Dawson - 28
Alex Silvani - 28
Alex Pearce - 20
Tanner Smith - 22

There is a huge gap between our three oldest key backs and the next, we need a 24/25/26 year old

McCarthy is a start.
Black in my eyes is a step back but could play a role.

Jack Watts or Jeremy Howe. Mobile forwards, weak as piss but could they provide short term solutions.

Dixon. I think he'd still on the agenda, wouldn't surprise me if this one gets more momentum, but doubt he'd come.

Playing Clarke, Sandilands and Griffin with one of them a stay at home forward, likely Griffin and the other 2 rotating forward?

Hmmm who knows be sure as hell need something.

Pav one more season and Fyfe forward another 2 solutions.

Yeah, we is f@#$ed

There is a gap but that's not a bad thing as the older guys have still got 2-3 years left in them so they can take the bigger bodies for that period and there is a good transition from there.

Can't remember if Rendell was still at the club then, but I wouldn't be upset whatsoever if the Steves managed to bring him west. He was an excellent recruiter/list manager and seemed to have a really good eye for tall talent in particular.

Yeah Rendell was still at the club then. He is working at Collingwood as a part time ruck coach.

Fyfe's too much of a beast around the ground to play him forward.

We really need to go hard this trade period. The more I think about it I get the feeling we won't be able to snare McCarthy. Based on his contract, they will talk him into staying.

If Pav retires we are in the shit. Only positive out of Pav retiring is his pay packet can be used at trade period. But if this is the case, he will need to retire before the trade period as I assume it would be illegal to offer Pav's salary on the basis that if we land someone big to cover his role he will retire.

Fyfe has to be used forward.

Take him out the midfield we still do alright, but look at our forward options and its clear he could become a no 1 forward.

As I said many times. Tanner Smith and Alex Pearce should play 10 games each next season as 3rd talls. With McPharlin gone, It is what freo should do next season.

As for our ruck stocks, we should keep Hannath. If Sandi retires at the end of 2016, we have Griffin, Hannath and Clarke and Apeness. As for our tall forwards. Hope Pav signs on for 2016. I Hope Apeness becomes our Josh Jenkins type ruck forward that kicks 30 or 40 goals a season. as much as I want McCarthy, I don't think we will get him, not this season anyway. I don't want to pay too much for McCarthy. I rather get Mason Shaw with a late pick and use our 1st round pick on a tall that can play both ends like Alex Pearce or Westoff.

I actually thought hannath wad pretty good a couple of years ago. Ruckman do take a long time to mature so I don't think delisting him is a must. There is potential there.

I agree. People tend to forget we had 2 of our 4 rucks out injured at the start of 2013.

This may be off the subject a bit. When I've watched Tanner Smith play, you can tell he gives his total ALL.

But I think we can get more development into Tanner Smith to become a better reliable backman by playing him forward for awhile... When playing back, he seems to get led to the ball and be a bit behind and not in position.. By playing him forward, it will teach him to follow the ball better and not just the player.. I think that's one of the missed secrets to Luke's success as a backman.. As he played as a Forward as a young bloke.

How is the Irish guy, Hurley shaping up?
I see he played a few league games with Peel this year.

No way we change the position of the best player in the game. That said he will play significantly more minutes forward next year given the lower rotations. Instead of going off he'll rest up front. If he played 70/30 mid/fwd that would be awesome IMO.

I know is off topic but just curious to ask since A.Pearce play in back and forward this year if we sign him any trial at midfield during off season, no harm have a look. If we got all player that can interchange position with sub rule gone. Might be handy with match up during game.

I think our KPP stocks are far too bare to allow us to use one of the few good ones we have anywhere that isn't a key position.

Probably a major discussion point is around SuperMac's retirement and what is going to happen as a result of that.

I had thought that what we would see is A Pearce stepping into the role on a much more full time basis. Lyon has made a mockery of that idea, perhaps in response to Pearce being injured. Instead we are looking at Dawson discovering kicking which is a novel idea of Donald Trump proportions in itself. But wait, there is more! He has also thrown up the notion that the rampaging Morabito could become a scud missile firing from defense.

Incredibly we also seem to have picked up two likely lads in Uber and Collins. These guys have impressed, and don't seem to be as far off as their draft position suggests, many pundits tipping debuts in their first year, although Uber is a Rookie List.

Other surprising things at the start of the preseason include Smith doing well and Sylvagni having a rare uninjured phase. Hughes and Hurley threaten to be considered at some stage too.

I personally think we are well covered.

I think we should play Johnson in McPharlin's role and introduce a creator to replace him. I would use Mundy personally.

Johnson is proven in the role having performed it well when McPharlin has been injured. Mundy is an excellent user of the ball and previously played as a defender.

Example:

Ibbotson A Pearce Sutcliffe
Mundy Johnson Sheridan
