He has had 8 games in 45 with multiple goals in a generally winning team. Kingsley Hunter did it 10 times in his second season and 24 times in 41 games.

This is his 5th year on the list, Pav is gone. If he can't keep Shane Kersten (14 times multiple goals from 37games) out of the side then he is done.

He is a good size and is hardly slow or cumbersome, but has all the hallmarks of a great trainer never cutting it at the level.
I will give him another two years to prove himself. With the likes of b.hill , Langdon ,weller ,tucker running in front of him to receive his handball if he been push to the wing.

I don't think Ross/Bond will give him any more years if he isn't cemented in the team after this year and either presenting hard on the wing (6-8 marks and 39 goals) or kicking 35-40 goals.

I think you setting a pretty high standard , so no matter what he do, he must score 37 goal .

Tabs only needs to compete against the opponents now, not opponents + team mate (the ole kick it to Pav problem Tabs had). It is do or die time, he needs a 30+ season to stay out of the magoos, but to lock in he really needs 40+ as the expectation from tall forwards is that they are targets for team mates and need to rain goals with that supply of ball given to them.

He isn't so easy to push off balance as he used to be, averaged 4.8 marks per game last year (buddy averaged 6) and should get more of the ball without everyone ignoring his leads and putting the ball on Pavs head instead. I hope that he owns 2017 and has a break out year.

Totally agree. Massive year for Tabs. Basically needs to mark everything (not his strong suit) and kick a few from general play. We know he has the goods when he gets it all together (V Bris he was terrific). Just needs to do it 23 times in a row.

Tabs will kick 50. Our 3 twin towers [emoji23] [emoji23] will be the new meta in AFL forwardline setups.

Good luck stopping the Tabernator!!

I've seen Tabs at training and he just looks so slow below his knees. If you can't catch and you can't pick the ball up off your toes then do you have the tools to play AFL?

He also goes missing for periods during games. It is the same problem Vickery has.

McCarthy certainly doesn't have those problems you have outlined and along with Kersten and Apeness hopefully we have enough variety to still cause some problems.

Tabs appeared to do better when he went up the ground and was able to use that tank of his. Some of his best games were when he was making multiple leads to the wing and not attempting to mark in a pack situation. Anyhow, obvious comment, but play them to their strengths and as it seems that McCarthy and Kersten are the best kicks for goal hopefully they are the ones playing closest to goal.

There is going to be a lot more competition for the key position forward spots this year so whoever is in the side will need to perform because there is likely to be someone knocking on the door constantly. If tabs can't take his grabs and play his part in the team he will be out however He did show last year in patches that he looked to be improving. Jonathan brown even thought he looked a good forward and just needed to improve his marking to be a solid player. For me he and McCarthy are the top two key forwards at the moment and the likes of apeness, kersten are biting at their heals.

That's true but key forwards don't develop over night. He has taking a bit longer than probably we would all like though
True, they don't. But they generally show a 20+ goal season in their 1st 4-5 seasons. See Cam McCarthy.

If he can't stay in and crack the 20 goal mark this year, i'd prefer we turned to the tall draft and maybe trade him if he has any currency. Slightly morbid, yes.. But he also doesn't have the versatility to play a serviceable key back role ala. Hamling who eventually found his niche after a failed stint up forward.

I think we all know it's more than likely that Taberner never becomes one of the best key forwards in the AFL but do we necessarily need him to be? Surround him with other talented forwards like McCarthy, Walters and I daresay Bennell, maybe even Ballantyne for a year or so he doesn't need to be anything more than a 30 goal a year forward IMO. Same goes with Apeness especially if he does play that second ruck role. Can't remember who kicked 40+ goals for the dogs last year at all but it wasn't Tom Boyd who was their only semi-decent KPF if I'm going to be perfectly honest.

Anyway point I'm getting at is this is in no way the last chance for Taberner. I don't really see any obvious options to replace him on the list given we probably play Apeness, McCarthy and Kersten together if he doesn't play which tbh I think he will first up. Even if he spuds up this year big time he's kept for depth IMO.

Cam McCarthy had a lot of other tall forwards around him at fed like Patton and Cameron for example. McCarthy would of had the third tall defender. Tabener has basically only had pav and that's it. I don't mind the idea of trading tabener though if he doesn't show any more improvement for a good deal

Don't think Cam and Patton have played that much together. Cam was generally the 2nd tall for GWS but given it was his first real season, there were some amazing signs. I think GWS lobbying so hard to keep Cam (far more so than any other GWS player that has hinted at leaving) gives us a clue to his potential worth. He might just end up having a more well rounded game than Cameron.

Boyd the list just keeps going

Yep.

Tabs has improved every year and finished the year in the Top 20 for contested marks.... something nobody on this board would have thought possible two years ago. His goal average has increased every year he has been on our list:

All we need him to do is keep improving his game and ability to impact over 4qtrs.

I am hopefully that he can get to around the 30-35 goal mark this season. If we can get Walters/McCarthy/Tabs/Kersten/Ballas all around the 30 goal mark we'd be going very well. We don't have a superstar up forward, what we need is an even contribution.

That 1.1 average was also when the team was at its worst so that's something else to consider

If he continues with the growth from 2015 -> 2016 -> 2017, it should see him at around 30 goals for 22 games, which is about where you'd expect him to be

I'm hoping for mid-30s but 30 would be solid (providing Walters, McCarthy, Ballas, Kersten are all getting at least a couple a game - with Walters and McCarthy getting 3-4+)

Tom Boyd was playing for the Western Bulldogs in 2015.
McCarthy had the year off last year. My point is tabener has had less of a quality key forward group around him for his time in the afl than McCarthy for example. Now that he is getting quality guys around him there isn't a reason why he can't step up and show what he can do if he isn't getting a quality key defender on him

Taberner has all the tools. It just may "click" for him. He is currently not in my best 22 however history is littered with players that all of a sudden come good. Realising that you belong at the level should not be understated.

It was good to hear him swearing at someone at training as he has looked too timid from afar. While he has been steadily improving (although I felt he went backwards in 2015), it is probably not at the rate some of us expect.

He probably has 2 years to establish himself.

at that rate he will take another 10 years at AFL level to be a serviceable forward.
????
What do you consider serviceable?

I would say 30 goals a year or 1.4 goals a game is serviceable. He's not that far off that now. Fingers crossed he reaches 40 goals a season.

Plenty of top teams have 1 or 2 players that kick the majority of their goals and then rest kick in the 20's and under. I think our best bet as a team is to have a more even spread.
