As an Essendon supporter, I'll nominate Collingwood in 1990 as the last pure premiership win.

No lead up tribunal nonsense, no salary cap questions, no behind play hits, no drugs, just a coach who aspired to the romantic notion of leading Collingwood to an enventual premiership.

May have forgotten something that happened during 1990 but which premiership really does stands without questionable conduct or ethics.

2005 Hall suspension, 2004 good win but the coach post match tainted it, 2003,2002, 2001 salary cap concession questions, 2000 Chirs Grant's goal, 1999 Kennett making Essendon footballers vote on prelim final day, 1998 1997 Adelaide being supported by Adelaide supporters, 1996 reasonably pure, 1995 salary cap, 1994 silly finals system (applies to a few other years), 1993 Silvagni touched it, 1992 Ben Cousins barracked for them, 1991 not played at the MCG
Ridiculous post, but i feel i must reply.

1 - 1990 was not pure. The insane drawn game replay rule was still in play. Incredibly disadvantageous to the WCE, who had to travel to Melbourne 2 weeks in a row to play the same team. Plus it meant Essendon had 2 weeks off instead of 1 in the finals which threw them out of whack.

2 - See highlighted point above. Read Brian Taylor's book or speak to any Collingwood player from the late 1980's or early 1990's and you will find that there were certain players at the Pies getting a bit of assistance in the weights room.

3 - North Melbournes flags in 1996 and 1999 were as pure as you can get.

4 - Essendon 2000. Nothing wrong with that either IMO. Chris Grant's goal happened in a Home & Away game, had nothing to do with the GF.

5 - 1993 (Ess) and 1995 (Carl). In both these years the AFL cleared the club of breaching the salary cap. I believe Carlton's breach occurred in the early 2000's. To speculate that they may have been over in 1995 is just that....speculation!

There was a bit of a bar lift with Chris Grant's goal.

Wrecked a perfect season. What a year it was yet that little taint of losing one game.

But 1999. Can you really expect footballers to vote and play on the same day.

The funny story was the Essendon president underwent surgery on the day. When he came to he was told Kennet lost and Carlton won. Thought he was being having a lend of.

Bet Kouta and SOS didn't front the booths the way they played.

I was wondering what Chris has to do with the 2000 Grand Final considering we got thumped in the first week of the finals :)
