Ah, good ol s 18, the provision the wannabe lawyers spout out on whirlpool every time someone is wronged. Undue influence is a good one, I quite enjoy that; Bester; Allcard etc..

Going okay, sitting on 82%, exam is out of 70, so I'd like to score 80% in it to stay above the HD line. How are you going? I do enjoy it so I will be taking it a step further and doing remedies as an elective next semester.

Yer Allcard is interesting, sitting on 88% atm, have you done tort law? im looking forward too that sounds interesting. Is it hard?

Yeah done torts mate. Doing a full time load on top of working full time hard work but ****ed if I wanna take 7 or 8 years to finish the bugger. As long as I finish with high 70's or over 80 im happy.

Depth is about as good as our midfield. I had some cohort email me and ask whether an executory contract is one that is executed by an executive of a company.

How important are marks early on in the degree? Fairly sure I'm going to have failed a couple of subjects by the end of 2nd year (5 year course combined with Arts), and my other marks are nothing to write home about. I figure I can explain them away easily enough in an interview as long as I lift my game from here on.

Finishing off my 4th year out of 5 atm. Last exam on Friday being Native Title. Pretty much the only subject that i'm still WTF is this shit a day out before the exam.

Off to Hong Kong to do a certificate in Chinese Business Law in January so that should be interesting!

Didn't get offered any clerkships out of 15-16 applications this year so i'll a little apprehensive going into my final year.

I've been finished law school now 12 months and know probably one person who got a grad job without having a clerkship and they didn't stay long past admission because the place was a pretty terrible environmnet.

A few of my mates though that are still studying and have had periods of poor marks have managed to get offers for clerkships given there work in the industry while they have been studying and things like study abroad. So grades aren't everything, although obviously higher is better, there is a diminishing return with them once over a certain point it seems.

I work top tier, and we only hire grads who have done a vac clerkship with us, and the only way to get past HR to get a vac clerkship, is good grades (or knowing a partner, lol)

Also, as you've mentioned, people who've done clerkships, tend to get offered more clerkships!

HR are terrible people..... Tell them that next time you see them for me.

The other way is through working at the firm while studying, essentially in the mail room at the bigger firms, but that's connected to knowing a partner or someone who can minimise the controll of HR.

The other advice I would give is to have an idea of what you actually like. It's incredibly hard to write a decent cover letter when you have no passion at all for the work the particular company does (this is made more difficult if you have certain political views.... when I was applying for VAC work Freehills had just drafted Work Choices).

Pretty pleased, Torts II I did bugger all work for this semester, so I am content with the 74.

Little worried though, my marks are not the greatest heading into my final year as a mature age student. Been volunteering at a community legal centre for the last 6 months so hopefully that can take some of the pressure off the grades.

The other advice I would give is to have an idea of what you actually like. It's incredibly hard to write a decent cover letter when you have no passion at all for the work the particular company does (this is made more difficult if you have certain political views.... when I was applying for VAC work Freehills had just drafted Work Choices).

You won't know what you actually like until you start doing it.

Keep your personal political views off your cover letter too.

Firms like HSF do a huge range of legal work. If you can't find an area they practise in that you like, you're boxing yourself in pretty tightly in a buyer's market.

try and get some commercial experience. even if it's just in a suburban firm doing conveyancing, sales of business and preparing trust deeds etc.
