To show you how skewed the party is this guy is considered a “moderate”

He was interviewed by the SMH where they quoted him as a senior “moderate”:

I endorse this idea from Rowan!

(As a sure-fire way to send the Liberals into oblivion)

Is he the craziest of the Sky News crew?

IMO, he's definitely the most smug and insufferable, and next to someone like Peta Credlin that's saying a great deal.

they all have their moments - who stands out on any given day would depends on the issue bunching their panties

on dean .... sees himself as the smartest in the room ...... and in possession of a razor sharp wit [neither of which is true of course but the poodle is not for turning] ..... he would be a painful dinner guest

He comes across as one of those egotistical douchebags who overestimates his intelligence.

Such people get on your nerves sooner or later, and they rarely understand that unless someone metaphorically (or literally) slaps them in the face.

Then they get offended but try to hide that fact because their ego won't let them admit that other people can affect them.

It’s worth reposting. Paul Kelly is a Murdoch gronk but even he can see the Liberals need to moderate to ever have hope of governing again. They are going further right with every pick.

I watched him on Q&A this week.

I found myself, for the large part, agreeing with what he said.

I'm concerned for myself. :)

There was a brutal period on the Sky Election Panel where someone suggested the result marked the end of the culture wars and the Liberals needed to pivot back to the centre to become relevant. Peta scowled and said there were not enough culture wars and the Liberals needed to further right. You could literally hear a pin drop

Has anyone got a link to the Sky election night livestream? Want to enjoy those tears again!

Wasn't it so great watching them going through 6 of the 7 stages of grief: shock, denial, anger, bargaining, depression and testing. Acceptance proving well beyond their intellectual capacity.

And for those who can choose where they sit (qld lnp and clp of NT) does it really matter?
It does not matter in the slightest. It's like arguing whether a zebra is white with black stripes or black with white stripes. It's still a zebra either way.

We can't be too far away from a big re-arrangement of the Liberal/National agreement. If the Libs are stealing Nats while counting is still going on, surely the Nats can't take this lying down.

Maybe they should demand the Leader of the Opposition tag?

Anyone know what the caucus split is? It's got to be pretty tight. And most Qld LNPs are probably far more aligned with Bob Katter than Tim Wilson.
Isn't there rumblings of it now?

As much as I’m a fan of the cookers being unceremoniously ejected, we do actually need an effective opposition to question and provide an alternate perspective so that better legislation is passed.

Your political party naturally has a focus on its constituents and will often not see the unintentional harm some legislation will inflict on those outside of its traditional base.

We are seeing this in WA with a nonexistent opposition - there’s legislation being written by city folk who don’t get the country and that feral animals are killed in their millions by volunteers and we are still struggling to keep the numbers down.

They are ratcheting gun laws that are already as strict as they need to be - SFA people are killed by guns in Australia.

In WA 52 people died in gun deaths from 2010-2022 - half of which were suicides.

The new unnecessary parts of the gun laws are just going to cause feral numbers to explode.

Then ten years down the track they will spend hundreds of millions getting professionals to shoot what amateurs did for free.

By all means tighten up on DV etc. But it seems the intent is to reduce gun ownership to nil by the boa constrictor method.

Albo is praising the gods or the stars or the Leprechauns or whatever at the moment. The Coalition just keep on delivering wins for him
All this will be forgotten by the next election.

Depends if the Libs can get disciplined and on message, we haven't seen much of the former yet and I'm not sure they even know what the latter is anymore.
This current kerfuffle might be "3 leaders ago" by the time of the next election.

I'm sure there will be a new crisis to capture public attention.

Interesting to see what happens in Victoria next year... last two times that a deeply unpopular Labor Premier had their work cut out for them has resulted in them winning twice as many seats as the Coalition.

With absolutely nothing known about the LNP team going up against them (hello Amelia Hamer in Hawthorn, Michael Sukkar in Bayswater and Keith Wolahan in Ringwood?), the stench of the Commonwealth Games fiasco being a few years old, a number of major infrastructure projects completed by then (including West Gate Tunnel and Metro Tunnel) and perhaps the Suburban Rail Loop not being quite as unpopular as they think (Libs have promised to scrap it in the 2022 state and 2025 Federal elections and been absolutely thrashed in Victoria), I wouldn't be betting against Labor getting up again.

All this will be forgotten by the next election.

It’s not the pre-selection battles, it’s the atrocious team that’s going to be the LNP leadership. Taylor? Ley? Price? Canavan? I doubt whether Jacinta will be renouncing her MAGAness in 3 years time

There’s a lot of pro gun lobby propaganda being put out to act as if these WA laws are “too restrictive” - here are the facts.

Hunters are still allowed 5 guns each, primary producers 10.

Mental and physical health checks will be conducted to obtain a licence

Guns will be taken off those holding restraining orders

Stronger gun safes monitored by CCTV

Restrictions on rifles and magazine capacities.

Farmers will still be to shoot pests, they just are being restricted from the next Port Arthur. 52 dead is still 52 too many.

Btw I’d have a think about this bit:

there’s legislation being written by city folk who don’t get the country

I assume you’re in rural WA? The LNP has been wiped out in cities for a reason. I put a part of it in WA down to the extremely arrogant and at times racist “Keep the Sheep” campaign. Rural folk telling city folk to vote according to the wishes of country folk without any persuasion. It’s that kind of arrogance that puts a strong distaste of country people in the mouths of city people, and pretending “country folk know better”. Well you obviously don’t. We live in a democracy and you in the bush are in a minority, and a shrinking one at that. The majority of this state don’t want depressed farmers grabbing unsecured rapid fire rifles with large magazines and taking it out on society. That’s the decision of the majority and you rural types will have to live with that.

Pre Selection is crucial because candidates will be heavily skewed in terms of who the members of the party select as The Punter has alluded to normal conservative folk appear to be outnumbered by the religious freaks and far right nutters taking the party further away from the centre than ever. In doing so an already splintered party ( a long way away from Howard’s “Broad Church”) now openly rips itself into 3 or 4 groups on the right side of the divide.

Unless more grass roots small l liberals get involved at Branch level the goose is well and truly cooked

True, but not really relevant to the post-election blood-letting. It will be just noise by the time they do/say something else stupid

Angus and Ley definitely don't have the juice to rein in Canavan and Price.

It'd be a disaster if that's who makes up the core of the leadership team.

Their best bet is to be low-key, think long term and be disciplined. That way if Albo et al stumble or fail to deliver then the Libs can market themselves as the "sensible" alternative. It may not be enough to win in 2028, but it's how you rebuild the party and take back significant ground.

Howard's middle class welfare his morphed into corporate socialism and while economic austerity for everyone else is a default setting regardless of circumstances it's a hard sell.
