The Liberal Party - How long? - Part 2

In a bizarre twist (not that anything is bizarre with the Liberals in SA these days) disgraced former SA Liberal leader and convicted cocaine supplier David Speirs threatened to return to contest his former southern suburbs seat of Black as an Independent, where he remains popular, if Hurn did not get elected as party leader. Probably reflective of his seeming resentment over the role Tarzia played in his downfall prior to his dug convictions.

Speirs was the one who convinced Hurn to run as a Liberal candidate when she first considered entering politics as an independent.
Spiers clearly wants to get back into Parliament, given how he keeps popping up the media talking about issues such as the Algal Bloom - my prediction is he's hoping Rushton will back him to run as the Liberal candidate for the seat.

That's bizarre. You'd think that footage of him snorting a substance in his kitchen; then claiming it was a deep fake; and then making a youtube video claiming he was the victim of a Deep-State conspiracy involving the SA Police; and then pleading guilty to two charges of supplying an illicit substance would kill any chance of him making a comeback to public life.

Apparently not. We live in strange times.

Sadly but 100% on brand, the freshly minted leader of the SA Liberals has outlined her first policy..

If elected the Liberals will throw out legislation enacted by the Malinauskas government to give SA indigenous peoples a Voice to SA Parliament.

Now I too have issues about the effectiveness of this body and the reasons for its creation in the lead up to the national referendum but fancy being so bereft of a vision for the state that you make an attack on Indigenous South Australians the opening announcement of your leadership.

Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss

Barrosa Valley nepo kid.

Just needs someone who is good at it to get a foothold.
I honestly read this as ‘hold a football’.

Embarrassingly I didn’t raise an eyebrow - just assumed you were making some kind of astute point or an analogy with the football or something, and didn’t want to admit that I didn’t understand it.

I was working a function recently and John Howard was there. He’s not far off the nursing home. Still walking, and without even the aid of a stick, but he’s aging at a dramatic rate.

Not that it was doing them any good anyway, but I doubt we’ll see the Libs wheeling him out in any future election campaigns.

Janette was looking sprightly though, so maybe she can step up to the plate.

He is 86 years old.

Here's some more age comparison stuff to give you pause on a Thursday morning:

Sussan Ley's age: 64 on Sunday
John Howard's age at 2001 election: 62
Malcolm Fraser's age at 1983 election: 52

Sounds the right age to run for President of the USA.

Howard is 3 years older than Biden and 7 years older than Trump.

Trump, George W Bush and Bill Clinton were are all born in a 3 month period in 1946. Their date of first election as President?

Clinton: 1992
Bush: 2000
Trump: 2016

Fairly solid trend happening there.

Monday's expert.
one of the things i admire about gillard is that after leaving politics, she pretty much stfu. the mad monk, after being sent packing by his party, then his electorate, remains all over the media spouting his ill-informed, rejected drivel.

Not sure if there’s a point you’re making mate, or just adding some fun facts?

I was simply saying that Howard has aged dramatically in recent times. It’s years since I previously saw him in person, but just going on what I’d seen on TV in last couple of years compared to in the flesh now, the aging process is doing that accelerating thing quite markedly.

Mostly interesting facts. I had mentioned the Howard/Ley thing a little while ago, but then I was reminded about how young Fraser was when he lost in 1983, so I just wanted to mention that.

Howard is Australia's oldest living PM. By the sounds of things, plenty should start preparing their trenches for when he passes away and his legacy becomes an item for discussion once more.

Howard's legacy will become a Liberal Litmus test. Like Reagan to Republicans.

They will all lay claim to him being their spiritual or economic leader and lionise his leadership as the last great PM and completely overlook the damage he did in both of those areas to the fabric of Australia. Whether it is the division he sought or the profligate spending he baked into the budget. And they'll completely overlook that he even lost his own seat.

Just for clarification, if I don't claim him to be my spiritual leader, have I proven you wrong?

Also "the fabric of Australia" has all the same meaningfulness as "Australian culture".

The really smart ones will suggest his premiership was a waste and largely inconsequential. They will also be wrong.

It wasn't inconsequential. It was what led the Liberal Party on the path to where it is today, both socially and economically.

Short-term populism which has made inequality (socially and economically) a lot worse for the majority while favouring a minority. As the minority becomes more minor, the Liberals struggle to hold on to a constituency.

Short-term populism is not an entirely easy case to make stick. IR Reform, Telstra sale, Gun reforms, taking tax reform to an election, Iraq War... a lot of not very popular policy decisions.

Yes, yes, the baby bonus and tax cuts for PAYE income earners. There was some sugar to make the medicine go down.
