Did we almost pay the ultimate price for 'keeping the lid on it' as a club last Friday night? For the first time in many weeks Geelong didn't appear to play instinctively. Now that we've made the Grand Final I believe it's time to take an unfettered approach into the game and just PLAY!

Our best is better than their best. Play instinctively Geelong! :thumbsu:

Re: Memo Geelong FC: Just PLAY!

they scared me so much when they stopped attacking in the last qtr on friday. i know they had to ice the game, but thats the geelong of old, the way we used to lose games!

the boys have played attacking all year, so i say, keep doing it and play the way that has bought the team success

Re: Curses & Omens

I was just going through the History books, and came up with a few interesting points about previous Finals & Brownlow Medalists for the Cats. All Grand Final appearances by Geelong since 1951 ('52, '63, '67, '89, '92, '94, '95) have been played on different dates in September, and in one instance October, none have been played on the same date (Saturday 29th Sept.). We have had a previous Brownlow Medalist in Paul Couch who went on to play in the Grand Final, 1989, and unfortunately for us we lost.
But in 1951 Bernie Smith won the Brownlow Medal, and we went on to win the Grand Final, and the date of that Grand Final was the 29th September, 1951.
Jimmy Bartel wins Brownlow and then goes on to play in the Grand Final, 29th September, 2007. And let's hope that the outcome is just the same.:thumbsu:

Talking about omens, the fact we've lost our last 5 grand finals, some where we were the favourites, won't come into play of course ;)

Re: Curses & Omens

I had so many omens last week it was weird. Everywhere I went I saw stacks of AFL figures, whereas normally I don't see any. For instance I saw Mickey O sitting in the Qantas club in Canberra, on the plane sitting behind me was Simon Crean (former Dons #1 ticket holder), and in the taxi from the airport to my house I saw David Neitz.

Kevin Rudd's cat came back, and it made national news (for some reason) - omen.

Finally there was the cocky mascot - the Magpie mascot was kicking around a small Geelong bear. I always reckon the cocky mascot is a killer omen which rarely fails.

There were stacks of others. A very odd week.

Fight Fire With Fire !!!!

Seems to me to me that as we Geelong supporters get closer to the big stage we are almost taking a back seat to Port in terms of arrogance and confidence. Not suggesting we resort to the crap that Mark Williams Chad Cornes and Co have been dribbling but I certainly think we should be more confident than many posters on here appear to be.

fact: we're the #1 attacking side in the afl
fact: we're the #1 defensive side in the afl
fact: we're one of the best clearance sides in the afl
fact: we're one of the best tackling sides in the afl
fact: we have arguably the best 2-3 midfielders on form (ablett - bartel - corey dominated brownlow voting over the 22 weeks)
fact: bookies have us red hot favouries $1.30 to Port $3.50 (they can't have the market framed that poorly)
fact: yes - Port have a slight advantage with Brogan and Lade but it was only worth a narrow victory a few weeks back.
fact: in that same game we were missing a brownlow medallist - all australian and the 2007 rising star (and propably 80+ quality stats) and got beaten with the last kick of the day)

I honestly think we played our grand final last week in terms of some players being over-awed by the occasion. You can't tell me that Ling Chapman Selwood Mackie and others will play 2 games like that in a row.

That Pies game is arguably the best hitout we could have had - whereas Port were running around high fiving each other from after half time. Both sides come from a "fish-bowl" environment where the weight of expectation is massive - so I don't subscribe to Chad Cornes theory that we have more to lose (it's a grand final for gods sake) You don't honestly thing at the 20 minute mark of the final qtr Gary Ablett Jnr will be thinking about what Gary Ablett Snr did out there in 1989 ?????

I think Port can argue a slight advantage in the ruck and 10 players with premiership experience - as for the latter, once the first 5 minutes are out of the way it's irrelavent.

So please - can we see more positive commentary from our own and let's not get sucked into the mind games before the ball is even bounced.

Something horrible will have to go wrong for us not to be very excited come 5.30pm on Saturday.

:):):):):):):)

This is the most nervous I have been coming into a Grand Final, because this time we are undisputed favourites and this time it really would be a choke if we did not win!

The last Grand Final I attended was 1995 when I was 11. Needless to say having having been to the 92 and 94 GFs I expected us to lose by then. This time I really am expecting us to win, and I we don't...I really don't want to think about it. But never having experienced a win I'm not sure what that would be like either, there's certainly a great unknown as to how I will be feeling at 5:30pm this Saturday.

On a personal note a couple of weeks back my team lost the Grand Final by 1 point after losing just one game all season prior to that. That was devastating. I can only imagine the devastation if these boys don't get over the line.

After the game last night this Grand Final has come just in time. My heart needs a rest. Very excited and very nervous is how I'm feeling

No Doubt

Lets all get the if's, butt's and maybe's out of our system/ posts and replace them with when, how we, how good will it be, how goos was it, how good have we been this year etc.
don't ever loose the faith, and belief that gets you through crappy years when you really know that deep down your team is the best one going around.
We got there by disecting each other supporters included.
Reviewing everyone that has "any" influnce.
Changed things.
Got fitter.
In the process as a whole (club , admin & supporters) Become as one with a resilience that hasn't been seen before.
Our historyu has nothing to do with us and is superstitional at best as it has no real tangabile relevancy that can prove anything.
We are the best .
We all belive it.
We are all mature enough to not be cocky FIGJAM's about it.
Have leadership oozing out os us.
And most of all an underlying need to prove ourselves to our mates not ANYBODY ELSE!

WE ARE THE BEST.

Spot on! If you play for your mates and do everything like we have done all year, like play on at all costs ALL THE TIME the guys don't have a lot to worry about. If they they start worrying about the consequences of this game, that's when they will choke

My prediction for the game, Cats thrash port by 10 goals+, Port shows off it's sportsmanship by criticising the umpires in their speech (Adelaide Utd style).

For what it's worth I think you guys will win.

If we hadn't had some key injuries we'd be there to beat you though.

We all know the Eagles eat pussies (esp in GF's).

Speaking of Omens, a few weeks ago after the Q final I noticed a lot of dead roos on the roadside. Last week on the way down to Melbourne we noticed a couple of dead magpies on the roadside. I suggested to my brother we pull over a grab one and tie it to the aerial and drive through melbourne with it. He suggested that was a silly idea unless I wanted every side panel of the car kicked in.
This week I'm hoping for the South Australian Electricity grid to fall over, now that would be the mother of all omens.

It's GF week - no need for the lid now.

Let's carve up those turkeys from Port Adelaide.
Sorry guys, but I've seen all 4 losing Grand Finals (plus the 4 night Grand Finals we lost also), so for me, the lid stays on until 5.30pm Saturday. That was the date I set way earlier in the season and I ain't changing it now!

Re: Fight Fire With Fire !!!!

Unless Port kick 3 goals in the first 5 minutes.
Unless they are the last 3 goals you kickfor the quarter......and we pile on a lazy half dozen.
anyway - we had our finals tempo experience game last week. you had a training run. like two weeks off really. and i belive we flogged the roos by more than you anyway...........
this week nerves are gone. focus is set. bring it on.

Completely agree about the experience part. In some ways having a game like that in the Preliminary Final - playing poorly, struggling, but still winning - could be the perfect preparation. They know what's required, and they know they have to improve on last week.

The next 3 days can't pass soon enough.
