Too good not to add here.

Hinkley has the 4th highest winning percentage of all current coaches, yet when you compare him to those around it's a stark contrast. Winning minor round games and having the equal worst 'make finals' percentage out of the lot.

4th - Hinkley, 0 GF's, 0 Flags, 3 prelims, 5/10 finals series

1st - McRae is new but on track for 100% finals series and prelims.
2nd - Scott, 3 GF's, 2 Flags, 8 Prelims, 11/12 final series
3rd - Longmire, 4 GF's, 1 Flag, 5 prelims, 10/12 finals
5th - Clarkson, 5 GF's, 4 Flags, 6 prelims, 10/17 finals
6th - Lyon, 4 GF's, 0 Flags (1 draw), 5 prelims, 8/13 finals
7th - Goodwin, 1 GF, 1 Flag, 2 prelims, 3/6 finals
8th - Simpson, 2 GF's, 1 Flag, 2 prelims, 6/9 finals
9th - Hardwick, 3 GF's, 3 Flags, 4 prelims, 8/13 Finals

Goodwin will make it 4/7 finals this year, which would make Hinkley outright last in making finals percentage, even if Hinkley makes the finals.

This is great. Have never thought of it this way.

After 11 seasons, Hinkley's claim to fame is winning 2 Qualifying Finals and 1 Semi Final

Bill Stephen coached at Fitzroy in the 1950s and 60s when they were hopeless then Essendon in the 70s, and then back to Fitzroy in 1979-80 and coached in 258 games and no GF. He had a win % of just under 33%.

Terry Wallace is 247 games at 2 clubs and no GF.

I didn't quite make myself clear in explaining the coaching stats I have laid down.
These coaching stats are not based on the overall number of games a coach has coached over their career without a preliminary final.

I was interested in the amount of games a club an administration would get to before they pulled the pin on a particular coach without some type of finals success. So it is about a run of games at a club not their overall career if that makes sense.

Like you said, Bill Stephen coached the hapless Fitzroy Boys three times and also Essendon. I am not interested in the overall games coached but the amount of games during one stay at a club before he got the Lemonade and Sars. So Bill Stephen coached Fitzroy for 53 games and left, came back and coached them for 115 games, went to Essendon for 44 games and then back for a short stint with Fitzroy for 46 games.

You will see Terry Wallace twice on the list that equals to the 247 games overall.

The stats are more of an indictment on poor administration than poor coaching.
That is why it is quite embarrassing to see Ken Hinkley way on top.
It shows the poor administration of Koch to allow this poor coaching to continue to fester.
That it is quite abnormal for a coach without some level of finals success to go past 150 games.

The coaches in bold are those still coaching.

Ken Hinkley has coached the most games at one club for no Grand Final appearances.
Ken Hinkley has coached the 3rd most games for no Grand Final appearances.
Ken Hinkley is 6 games away from outright 2nd on the previous stat, which is week 2 of finals should we make it that far. He's also 17 games away from being outright 1st, something he can't achieve this year but with an extension he could achieve this as early as Round 14 next year (assuming we play 3 finals).
We're less than a year from needing to say "at one club" in the first sentence. Man...
