dont want to ba a hater, but I do not agree with alot of your assessments....

I highlighted what I think is plain wrong

C. Smith is a highly rated midfielder from QLD and is still just a lad at 18. I don't think he has even been given the chance to develop as of yet... to early to boot him.

The word "in our best 22" didn't figure too many times -10 and two AA's

Oh dear !

The legacy that Connnoly and cam have left as the journey unfolded was one of short term goals.

Oh no, it's all doom and gloom jarman doesn't rate some of the players

Solly one more year?? The guy has been one of the best players this year and by some distance might I add

soloman 1 more year? the guy has been our most physical player for the year gets in and gives a real contest. he has more than that in him.

Gilly has been great for us this season, last week he was just about the only shining light he gives it everything each week.

Smith is just 18! his first year. the kid looks real good with lots of potential. great size for his age and has speed! some people on here have called for him to be elevated at the end of the year.

Duffield well i reckon he will be ok has not had alot of afl games but with more of ago he will be ok. but once again not very old.

While I agree with many of your views I couldn't not comment on 3 of them.
1. Crowley - Is not a depth player!!!! When we had our run of 9 in a row last year he was consistently in our best 3 or 4 and it was no coincidence that when we had our best win against Adelaide a couple of weeks ago it was Crowley who was in the top 3 on the ground.
2. Dunn - whilst I agree he has had a horror run of injuries, he is still a top 10 pick and was a dual AA in under age footy. You dont de-list a player of his quality. He may get traded but he certainly wont get de-listed for someone else to pick up for nothing! He is a keeper for mine.
3. Smith - Not sure if you've seen this guy play or not but he is very highly regarded at Freo. He has put on a lot of muscle since he has been in WA and will be a very good tagger if not a midfielder. He will be a very good player. Also (I think)you cannot de-list an interstate rookie after 1 year (you have to have them on your list for at least 2 years)

You call it doom and gloom - I call it being realistic. You might also not forget that we are sitting 13th position on the ladder and please tell me where the improvement is going to come from with this squad to get us into top 8 and let alone top 4 and a chance at a GF in 2008.

I just think we are going to struggle for a few years until the next crop of youngsters come through but that is going to take time. Our midfield is slow and gets thrashed. We did not keep an eye on the future when we traded away our draft picks.

I would love to be wrong but here we are again - another one of the many failed seasons.

Accept that I could be wrong about Smith - that is great news that we may have a young bloke who may have the goods. Bloody hope so.

Campbell- Needs to be traded. Get a good pick while we can.
Crowley- Best 22
Duffield- Needs more game time.
Gilmore- Needs to be in our best 22 has alot of potential.
Headland- Has had his best year at Freo til date. Gets heavily tagged.
Sandilands- Should have had surgury earlier.
Thornton- Not a depth player should be traded to Brisbane or Richmond
Webster- Definately keep. CC should give a better task not a defensive foward.

Solomon has been a standout this year. '1 more year' is laughable. Try 4 more years, please.:thumbsu:

Gilmore has shown plenty lately, and that's coming for a serial Gilmore bagger.:D

Same goes for Headland. 2007 has been his best year at Freo, EASILY. (not saying much, he he)

It's no surprise that when Freo was up and running, Crowley was up and running. He's had an indifferent year, but take a look at the tape of the derby from round 21 last year. ;)

On the other hand, how can you say that CC 'ruined' Murphy? I was as stoked as anyone when he dominated in the semi final against Melbourne last year, but he has done VERY LITTLE since. OK, so Tarrant's arrival didn't help, but he's had chances to prove himself. 2008 will be a defining year for Spud.

Here are some 'marquee' players who have been inconsistent in 2007 (IMO):

M Johnson - looks like a million dollars when things are going well, goes missing when they aren't. Also makes some bad decisions.

McPharlin - still gets a heap of it, but his kicking has gone from 'a bit dodgy' to 'poor.' Stuffs around with it way too much, IMO.

Mundy - I'm a Mundy fan but some of the shine has come off this year, for sure.:thumbsd:

Crowley - hasn't looked the same player. More than a depth player, but will need to improve in 08.

Ok lets looks,

Johnson not getting rubbed out for 4 weeks for something that now doesn't even get a suspension. During that time we went 1-3

Farmer not being rubbed out for 12 weeks due to complete stupidity.

Schammer actually participating in a pre-season campaign, I'm suprised he has even played this year.

Peake actually stringing games together, 2 collar bones in one year the guy has had no hope at all.

Sandilands has not been fit at all over the last 7 weeks and it has shown, blooding Warnock will be a huge bonus for the club next year and beyond.

Thornton's run from the backline was missing early, as was Black not getting a full pre-season in due to injury.

I have no doubt that there are several players in the WAFL who will step up and Ibbo is one of them. I still also feel Murphy has a lot more to offer the club and will really cement his spot in the next few weeks.

Gilmore has shown he has what it takes at the top level, hopefully he can build on it from now and develop into a midfielder/wing type player.

Most of all, the results of this season will drive the team on. Nothing hurts more than putting in a season like the Fremantle 07 or Geelong 06.

A new coach and some fire under the players will also be a bonus.

This team is considered slow, throw in Schammer, Peake & Ibbo with the likes of Headland & Black who I still believe should be in the midfield and the pace is there to break the lines. Hayden and Johnson can handle the run off the backline with Thornton.

I'm also still laughing at your assesment of Headland.

2. Dunn - whilst I agree he has had a horror run of injuries, he is still a top 10 pick and was a dual AA in under age footy. You dont de-list a player of his quality. He may get traded but he certainly wont get de-listed for someone else to pick up for nothing! He is a keeper for mine.

Dunn is contracted for next season, so he'll be on our list unless someone offers a 2nd round pick for him. Next year will be his 5th year as an AFL player though, and if he doesn't prove that he is up to it in 2008 he will certainly be delisted.

Campbell- Needs to be traded. Get a good pick while we can.

Thornton- Not a depth player should be traded to Brisbane or Richmond

Webster- Definately keep. CC should give a better task not a defensive foward.

In all likelyhood that "good pick" wouldn't be in the top 20 if we traded Campbell. If a good trade was offered I'd jump at the chance but there's no point trading a handy player for a late 2nd round pick.

Thornton has crohn's disease and can't gain wait or train fully over summer. This reduces his trade value to close to zero so we might aswell keep him.

What other role could Webster play? Doesn't win enough of the ball to play in the middle, doesn't have the pace to play on the wing and we have a dozen half back flanks.

Solomon has been very good, but Essendon only offered him a one year deal because they thought he had lost a yard of pace. Hopefully he can carry his form into 2008, but I'll be angry if he is re-signed before the end of the 2008 season.

Crowley's knee injury in Ireland has really hurt us this year. Easily in our best 18 for 2008.

Campbell worth a number a 2nd round pick prob better than we choose him at. Richmond or Carlton would go for it. Richo getting to old. Fevola seeking a move to West Coast.
Thornton well Richmond need a running defender. As does Brisbane.
Webster can be a good clearence player in the midfield. Has a good long direct kick. Can be used as another tall foward. IE Watch 2003 elimation final against Essendon second half. And 06 highlights. Its just a waste having him defending in the foward line. Can also tag if needed.

I won't comment on your rankings, however if they are at all correct it shows how bad a year (as it's in our recent memory) or how poor our list really is. To have numbers 3-5 our backline (Rog, Dodd and Grover) and number 7 the so called broken down old man Soloman tells a story. No midfield and not really a strong spine except Pav.

i think we may need to trade murphy for a young midfielder. perhaps we can look at farren ray. we will also probably add matthew moody from brisbane, a tall wingman who hasnt settled in well in queensland

hypothetically if we added these 2 to our midfield plus whoever we pick up in the draft it starts to look a lot better. i dont think we are that far away and we certainly dont need to rebuild

Using the OP's player descriptions I have grouped by importance/rank. Players are not ranked within the groups but the (number) on the right shows how little depth we have got. Not too much past 22. Next year we need a good few draftees or young players to really step up.

Star/Absolute keeper
Bell – great again but will he play next year??? (1)
Farmer – one more year (2)
Hayden – one of our best and maybe AA (3)
Pavlich – our best and all AA (4)

Solid Performer

J.Carr – slow as midfielders go but in our best 22. (6)
Crowley – ok as depth player (7)
Dodd – in our best 22 (8)

Hasleby – great when not injured (10)
Headland –not a fan as he is too inconsistent.Gets lost to easily but keep.(11)
Johnson – in our best 22. (12)
McPharlin – in our best 22 but needs more consistency (13)
Sandilands – awesome physically but should have done better. (14)
Solomon – one more season. (15)
Tarrant – keep as in our best 22 and need to get something in return. (16)

Developing and looking AFL standard or near
Campbell – needs opportunities. (17)
Drum – keep, develop and give him opportunities. (18)
Mundy – in our best 22 (19)
Murphy – ruined by CC. Needs coach to give him a go. (20)
Peake–one with real pace.Keep and give him opportunities & responsibility (21)

C.Smith ® – not up to AFL standard (29)

Depth Player
M Carr – too slow & past it. (30)
Gilmore – not sure about him. Maybe Ok as backup (31)
Walker – had his day. (32)
Webster – limited opportunities. Just not sure if we should keep. (33)

Unsure, leaning towards not a long term prospect
Browne – injury prone. Is he going to string some games together?? (34)
Duffield – I don’t know if he has it. (35)
Haddrill – will he get back???? (36)
O’Brien – keep and develop. (37)
Thornton – just not sure on him, maybe keep as depth player (38)

Gone
Cook – cult figure but past his best (39)
Copping ® – de-list, not to AFL standard (40)
Longmuir – injury and gone (41)
McManus – cult figure but had his day (42)
Parker – been great for the lub but had his day (43)
Rumble ® – not up to AFL standard. (44)

There is no way we could keep Browne on our list next year. Though knowing us we'll sign him to a 4 year contract.

The thing is, guys like Walker/McManus have been almost delisted 2 years in a row.. yet you could make a case for them staying. We've gone nowhere.

Just a couple of comments.

Headland would be rated higher than most have on here, certainly higher than Peake or Crowley for example.

Farmer should be in the possible retire section. He is carrying a huge weight of points against him if/when he infringes again, not to mention that it should spell the end of his career if he does any off-field activities of the type he has been prone to do of late. The reality is that we should not expect a full season from him, nor build a structure that relies apon him, which means, develop Collard.

This is our list and the way I see it. IMO the kitchen cupboards are a bit bare. What do you guys think?
I'd be interested to see you assess some other clubs list to know whether you're as ruthless and uncompromising on all clubs or just your own.

There is a pretty cynical view being expressed here.

For example, Scotty Thornton would be a walk-up start for most teams. Reads the game well. good overhead, keeps his feet, and fantastic closing speed, and solid disposal by foot and hand. Has towelled up some very good players in the past.

Solomon has been a revelation this season and is only 26. He has another 5 years at least.

You massively overrate Thornton. He didn't play well in the WAFL and would be lucky to get a game elsewhere.. gets pushed off the ball too easily which means the only role he can actually play is the running defender. His disposal isn't great either. Cuddles can probably attest to his shit kicking at goal.

Solomon was a brilliant pick up, and he has gotten no press at all. We got him for a song, and he has been a great contributor. People talk about Freo's shithouse trading record... well we definately got a bargain in solomon.

Our rookies do not look good, thats just a fact. When a guy is barely getting a game in the reserves you know he is shit. We need a good 10 new players on our list next season, we're heading to rebuilding land if not next year, then the year after. Any team who has guys like Walker still on their list, and probably will next year as "depth" should know they are in trouble.

AGREED on Thornton and Solomon
I personally think this years Draft will be better than the hype surronding last years. Freo choose well in last years Draft is just that they have a policy on playing youth(CC). Many from this years selection will be a certain starter next season providing no injuries or form slump. I personally think Freo new about some of this up and coming talent for this years Draft hence the position they are in. Freo certainally didnt stuff up last year in the Draft and Trade period.

I think Thornton is a good player, remember he is only 9 games back from missing a whole year and he was in great form up until his injury. He was excellent against Adelaide for a low confidence player who the previous match could have saved CC's job, it would be ridiculous to get rid of him at this stage.

The problem is he is too slight to play in a proper defensive role. We can't put him on anyone with decent strength, because he'll get man handled in any marking comp. He got absolutely towelled up by Brad Johnson. He maybe a decent player for us, but to say he'd get a run at most other clubs is incorrect.
