There's that bit in Aliens where things turn to shit and Lt. Gorman is just stuttering and stammering in his command console unable to make the squad (or what remained of them) extract themselves under pressure.

Loved the Aliens reference:thumbsu:...who is Hudson screaming "game over maaan"?

NBL or SEABL days?

I've been following the team since their inclusion in SEABL so I've seen a few captains in Adam Lamont, Jarrod Leonard, Braith Cox, Jamie Medved and now Nathan Herbert.

I thought you were referring to the Cecil Exum days at first but then realised you may not be as old as me.:D

It possibly looked like a loose zone, garding grass and the like on TV but at the ground it was none of that, we were simply scorched for pace by the Suns that ran and ran in waves to get to space and their ball handling and use in general put us to shame,if your looking to lay the blame on Scott for this one your barking up the wrong tree.
Fact is our leg speed is snail pace all over the ground and that was our undoing.

Who else would encourage the zone though? Scarlett and Enright definitely never played that style of defense. It actually doesn't even restrict scoring when we do it.

Paul Roos highlighted our default defensive structure on the team announcement show on Thursday showing clips of Geelong players running away from the bloke with the ball or the mark and not at them to close down space.
Case in point was one where a ball was kicked to Pendlebury about 10mtrs outside of 50, I think Lonners was just inside the 50 but instead of running at him to man the mark he actually ran back towards goal (guarding grass/space) which allowed Pendlebury to waltz into the 50 and kick an easy goal under no pressure.
My dad and I have had a joke about it for about 3-4 years now but I think our H and A wins have been masking this big crack that get exposed come finals.
That said I think we have a fairly decent team but we need an overhaul of some players/structures to compete in modern finals type footy.

It's infuriating and this is the best example of it. MAN THE FRICKIN MARK.

And this is why we are losing finals....

It was probably a combo of both... from a free kick when we have time to set up you can't blame leg speed on a giant red head finding miles of free space again and again

I actually think zone defence works. BUT, someone has to hunt the opposition ball carrier at the same time. We are peeling off the ball carrier which makes the zone pretty much useless. Our defenders are getting smashed because there's absolutely no pressure on the opponent and therefor the kicks are just too good going into the middle, and then into the forward line.

Seriously Willo,Lonners and Harry looked like they were ready for the knackery and combine that with some terrific ball inside 50 and it was just two easy,on the way home we discussed how Tom Hawkins might have have gone against that defence, with that delivery and 2mtr as the second forward, all but one thought he'd have kicked 6.The odd one out was me.

If anyone can explain the thinking behind this I'd love to hear it.

Guarding non-dangerous space.

Standing 5m off your opponent inside 50m.

Not manning the mark properly.

Getting sucked into the contest leaving loose men on the goal side.

:mad::thumbsdown::fire:

Open Space: Kicks,0 Handpasses,0, Goals, 0, Tackles,0 Hitouts,0 TOG 100%

I rest my case.

Hahaha...did lol at the giant redhead bit.
My mate who i was watching the game with last night was tearing his hair out at our lack of accountability, especially inside our defensive 50.

Watching Taylor fall twice in pusuit of Lynch reminded me of double dropping to the bass at the Room 99 #putrid.
To be fair, Taylor was covering for Lonergan who had either already fallen over or was lagging by 10m.

And have you noticed how our short passes by hand and foot take the highest possible arc at the slowest possible speed?
Doms and Blitz are specialists at this, both hang the ball in the air far too much

I find it hard to believe they would promote it, and that Scarlett would bite his tongue.

But then I didn't think CS would tolerate softness and people squibbing it after the way he played, so.........
