Fellow Blues Supporters,

Today we were heavily out-marked on both sides of the ground. The loss hurts. Over the next week we're going to face numerous trolls on this board and the Bay, and the doubts may set in.

But here is my response:

  • We were outmarked, but Waite and a fit Jamison should rectify this on either side of the ground.
  • The previous weeks have been earmarked as games that would prove whether we were a legitimate Top4 team. We won those games, and today's loss should not change anything. No loss should be accepted, but our aim is to peak in The Finals; and a game against WCE really means nothing.
  • We missed our inside ball-winners today (and blocking for Judd), and it showed in the clearances. Robinson and Curnow really help Judd out, and they'll come in over the next few weeks.
  • Certain Best 22 Inclusions over the next few weeks include: Jamison, Waite, Laidler, Duigan, Robinson...as well as Bower, Curnow and Mclean.

These are not excuses, they are reasons...reasons not to panic, and to keep faith.

I put this loss down to naivety that our game plan will cover their talls and our lack of intensity around the ground and the packs.

Really dissapointed with today.

Allowed them to spread way too quickly, way to many uncontested marks to Eagles players all day long.

Yeah losing Jamo hurt, and not having Waite and Duigan was a blow, that reduced us to a pack of dwarves and Robinson, Curnow and Hampson would have been handy inclusions.

Still, they beat us on the rebound.

Lynch will get three weeks. At least. He's gone twice (both for cleaning up Murphy).

  • Our lack of quality talls will see us get found out in September.

Injuries have exposed us badly. Today was the first real test of our supposed depth, and we failed miserably. We have overpaid terribly in the Warnock and McLean trades. Pick 11, 24, and 56. One of the key reasons our depth is suspect.

Henderson is neither a forward nor a backman.

We had too much hype surrounding us - happy for everyone to now dismiss our chances, as we quietly build for a big finals showing for the rest of the year.

Got good players to come back in, we've shown that our best is right up there, we've shown consistency, we've shown that we will overcome challenges - losses happen, what more is there to say...

Spot on. The dirty attention and borderline-sniping treatment Murphy is receiving this year really sickens me. It's a credit to him that he appears unphased; but gee it gets me ****in angry.

Every team has a shit day, today we were shit, and WCE to their credit played to their full potential. Losing 5,6 players in one week is going to really affect team chemistry especially when that group had been playing together collectively practically all season.

I look forward to see how we respond next week

We are the only team in the top six without a core of proven, experience premiership players. Today's game really shows up the magnitude of Carlton are trying to achieve. We are starting from scratch, building a side around Judd. The rest of them just need to add a few players here and there from draft, to complement their proven quality, and they are away.

The Eagles have built an incredible list in less time than us purely because of that quality core of players. We, on the other hand, are relying on Murph and Krueze to play that role. And they are basically kids. Come finals time, this discrepancy is only going to be magnified.

Still, there's not much we can do except keep pumping games into them, teaching them, hoping to unearth some more gems like Duigan and Laidler.

We need to be trading for proven players come draft time. No more kids. We have too many.

We also have a bloke called Judd, pretty handy player ;).
Simmo and Scotto are also solid players.
The reason the Eagles won is becasue they had there best side playing and they wanted it more. We also had no hope in covering their talls.

Disagree. I hope he turns out a forward but he will be a very good player in either position. He's over 2 years younger than Josh Kennedy, and has shown signs at least as good as JK had at this age. (Remember last few rounds of last year?)

As a 2nd forward to Waite, he'll be very effective. (Making Kreuzer even better).

And in the 2nd half, he played CHB quite well against JK.

Today Kreuzer was needed everywhere, and so at times 1AW had to be our no.1 contested marking option in the FWD line. It's not going to happen. Henderson FWD would've made a lot of difference.

Jamison and Waite will provide a huge ripple-effect, so be patient. We've waited 5 years, what's another 2 weeks?

Yeah, totally agree.

But the i find amazing is the speed with which WCE have rebuilt. It has taken us 4 years to get to this level. They made it in two. It's that quality core that we lack.

I think we'll get a similar result against the Hawks and Pies. But we'll probably win most of our other games and finish 5th. I'll be happy with that, as long as we win that first final.

Today was the first real test of our supposed depth

Really?

Our depth was tested more against Richmond than today and we won.

Hawks have been praised for their depth after beating Bombers, we were criticized for not beating Richmond more convincingly - not sure how the two don't compare...

Having depth doesn't mean you must beat top 5 teams to prove it - if we were capable of doing that, we would be premiership favorites clearly.

That first one (the elbow to the face) will be at least reckless, head high, moderate impact.

The second one at least negligent, head high, low impact.

Combined he's looking at three weeks with a guilty plea if lucky.

Murphs gonna have a busy night this week.

We learnt today how many injuries we are away from mediocrity. That won't last forever.

Take Mitch And The Doctor's no-doubt footy away and we look decidedly pedestrian around stoppages.

The Eagles set up well today. Couldn't penetrate their press with any system, their spare man down back worked much better than ours, and their talls killed us on the rebound.

The eagles finished 14th last year and we 8th, any team that has injuries to 5 to 6 key first team players playing against a top 8 side will struggle. I am telling you know OUR season will be determined by personnell, our young players are not good enough to step up when their are key outs. Henderson been in the system for waht 4 to 5 years not up to it simple. Austin injured all the time, Mclean recruited with pick 11, where is he should have played today. Warnock gone backwards. We have not enough QUALITY talls in the side to do well in September. We need Waite and Setanta the side, and what the hell has happenned to to Bower. Lucas ! top pick. Watson is not up to AFl standard at this stage. Luke Mitchell is out for the season.

OUR season like most sides will be determined by injuries simple. Unless your Hawthorn!

????

Please dont use Richmond as a measure to justify our depth.

It's a low starting point

It was either Cox or Lynch who cleaned up Smurph in the third quarter I think... it was definitely Lynch who nailed him in the last.

Yeah, the form of Austin was a huge disappointment.

Really need a tall, big fella like him down back but he doesnt look like the one to take that role. Maybe he will continue to develop now he is injury free. Don't like his chances of making the cut, however. Delisted, I imagine.

Irish is not in the mix and McLean is, but just.

Can't see why all that worry, really.
We were always going to lose another couple leading into finals, and taking 30% off your starting personnel out of the equation will invariably rock the boat.

My only concern is that we didn't use our main weapon today: Speed.
Whether we slowed down intentionally or were just forced into it, we were just too stop/start.

We got away with the lack of height against Adelaide, yet this time around we had even less experience down back and suffered accordingly.
Must say Austin just didn't look likley at any point at all. Shame.

+1

Speed didnt kill today and thats our game. WC took us off our game and we lost.

Aussie needs to keep his eye on the game, i think he overthinks things. He berates himself for losing a contest and the WC player runs around him and snags a goal. Not a smart player.

It'd be nice if we actually went up for marks or at least crashed the packs a few times. It's embarrassing seeing a whole pack of players gathering around an airborne ball only to see a WCE player take an unconstested mark :o. It hurts to see that happen. Not hard to time a decent run at the ball....
