Re: I hate to say it.....

2007, the highest amount of contested marks from opposition disposals...Tom Harley.

You guys are an absolute joke, wouldn't expect anything less from you MartyK

1. Harley always goes for marks... far more than any other defender I've ever seen so he takes more.

2. Most of them are in a pack when he is 3rd man to a contest. He seldum takes them one on one.

This stat doesn't show the other aspects of a defenders game. Speed, quality of disposal, tackling etc, etc. Harley sucks at all these. So what??

When its 2 onto 1 and he's third man up he should mark them.. How about when he doesn't mark them but does have an opponent who crumbs the goal.. Is that someone elses fault?

Re: It wasn't just the loss...

not panic time yet but we have a few issues ,firstly I want to say that player for player we are the best side by a long way

1.mooney and hawkins are not performing as well as mooney and nathan last year ,is nathan being missed ?

2.Johnson is performing no where near the level he was last year

3.taylor is not as good as egan was last year, that is a loss their

4.Ottens is a massive loss to us, he was the player of the finals series last year, we will be a 4 goal better side with him in .

5 WE ARE STILL GOING TO WIN THIS PREMIERSHIP

Re: I hate to say it.....

Not one player earned their pay tonight. Ling was clearly not fit and whoever the idiot was that let him play should be shot. SJ needs a firm talking to about his efforts tonight. Why does he keep trying to evade the player on the mark instead of concentrating on kicking the ball to a target? F*ck me that guy can be so frustrating sometimes. I could tell in the first quarter it was going to be a long night. The boys just couldn't grab the ball first time, in particular Ling.

Next week will be interesting.

Re: I hate to say it.....

Wow, the knives are out and they go for the captain... Interesting...

He hasn't been that bad this year, tonight he was ordinary, but backman always look ordinary in a big loss.... Even more so with no midfield pressure...

Other than GAJ there wasn't a player on the ground that looked up to speed with the game to single out Harley is easy, you couldn't go for Taylor because even a moron can figure it's his first year, you couldn't go for Milburn or Scarlett for obvious reasons so it's Captain Harleys time to hang up the boots?

These forums really are a haven for the uneducated to have an opinion...

Do your research. I've been on Harley for a long time. The captaincy keeps him in the team my friend. Ever heard of a bloke named Vandenberg? Dumping his arse was the best move Hawthorn EVER did!! Consolation garbage games because he's captain... not professional!

Re: The Loss we had to have??

Just A Shit Team

Thanks Mods.

Yeah, I still don't believe in 'losses we had to have' but I suppose given the way we've been going, a bit of a wake-up call is in order. Our calling card last year was that we put in four quarters, or close to it, and that is why we won many games by large margins, and also put teams away in the closing parts of the game. This year it seems we've been coasting, getting by with a quarter or even 15 minutes of great footy. Collingwood tonight showed that it wont be enough against the top sides.

A wake up call for all of us, fans included. Our boys are human and every now and again will put in a shocker, but hopefully it will be kick up the arse they need to at least play the four quarters from now on.

Re: The Loss we had to have??

Tonight was a embarrasment, I realise its only 1 lost, but by that margin was deplorable. For the past few weeks we have been playiong ordinary football against sides that are struggling. Here is a list of players in which I thinks needs to be targeted:
Mooney is shot, the amount of drop marks he did tonight was dismall, I feel he has not got the presents he has had during the past 2 seasons.
Bartel: Cant fire, he kicking effeciancy was way off the mark.
Blake: Did we give him a sympathy vote by keeping him; he is no good. Cant run. Cant kick. 2nd rate ruckman.
Taylor: Has been playing some good footy at times, BUT his attack at the footy and pulling out of contests made me wince.
Stokes: He got the ball but didn't do anything.
Hawkins: We need a power forward to step up in big games, but he failed to produce when it counted. Handballing out of bands.....dumb...
Some of the players are living off last year.

This lost having been brewing for quite some time, I am a realist and a passionate supporter. We won it last year, but the way we have been playing over the past month will not win the Geelong Football Club another flag. I am not saying we dont have the talent Im just saying some players have to pull their fingers out of their arses and have a go.
WE HAVE THEN TALENT TO DO SOMETHING SPECIAL.....BUT UNTIL THE BLOKES HAVE A GO AND NOT WAIT TILL HALF TIME.......the start of the year will only be a memory.

Excellent post Catter. Agree 100% :thumbsu: They need to start showing up to 4 quarters of football and not content with just 1. A better reality check they will not get.

Fair dinkum, take it easy. We got belted but you can't honestly tell me that Ablett, at least, didn't try his guts out. Same for Hunt, Enright and Joel Corey. They mostly got beaten but they at least put in.

Didn't we win the flag last year, or was that my imagination?

Re: I hate to say it.....

Ahh this is more like the geelong fans I know. For christsake everyone take a bex and lie down, you'll all do your phoofer valves at this rate. We were gonna loose a game eventually, if we loose the next three start puttin the shit on, w***ers.

Re: Is this what we have needed ?????

I think tonight was exactly what we needed. Not necessarily the margin, but definitely the result. Maybe we believed we just had to turn it on for 20-30min and win, as that is what it seemed to take in the last few weeks.

Scarlett was spot on after the game too, when he said when they don't play as a team, the players look average. Can hardly remember one guy shepherding for a teammate tonight. Very ordinary, un-Geelong like effort tonight. :thumbsd:

These are just pathetic excuses. As the OP said, the boys who were out there tonight were certainly capable of matching it with the Pies in terms of intensity and passion but there wasn't any of that. They were slow and dismal. It didn't matter to me that much that we lost tonight. It was how we played... utterly insipid.

He plays on the small forwards because he regularly beats them in the air. Collingwoods disposal into their forward line is shocking but they run their guts out and put themselves in a position to shoot a goal.
The stats don't lie young fella, he was a key in the best defensive unit last year and breaking out the knives after one ordinary game (along with everyone else in the side) just shows how little you know about team sport.

Re: I hate to say it.....

Ah how correct you are... Why not just have the guy sitting on the bench in the coaching staff if he's such a "great leader". His use ON the ground has been incredibly limited for much longer than people are willing to realise.

If he gives a dam about the side he'll retire and let Taylor take his role in '09. Otherwise he's slowing the teams progression.

Belittling his contribution because he is third man up is laughable. It actually shows how hard he works to get across and help out his team mates....thats leadership. He certainly isn't our best player, but I think he deserves his spot easily. I questioned his appointment last year, but i think it has been the right move, and continues to be so.

When the cream doesnt rise to the top as usual, the shit floats up instead.

I don't have a problem about losing a game, only an idiot would believe a team can go through undefeated. But why oh why did it had to be against colonwood? Even losing to the dawks would be more bearable. And the margin :o:o:o:o:o:o:o

Nothing wrong with improving the team. Next year when Egan is playing, Harley must go, simple as that. Taylor is developing well and already has Harley covered in many areas. Tom 'Deadwood' Harley rode to the flag as a passenger..

Have you all forgotten that Thompson actually tore shred off Harley after his perfromance in the prelim in '07? Well documented. This is the captain we are talking about. Not good enough.

Re: Ouch!!

You're gonna have a bunch of supporters saying "Oh no, season over" and I hate that. You had a single loss, and one off night... and my boys really did come at you hard (which is something no one really saw coming, not to that degree).

You're still the reigning premiers. You're still an awesome side. And even though Hawks are probably the flag favourites now, you still have a chance to change that when you play them later in the year.

Just put this behind you and move on.

Actually I think the margin was a good thing, if there was any complacency creeping in (IF) then that will defintely snap them out of it.
Will agree with the shepherding observation as well although the way the pies play it's hard to keep the game plan going.

Ok...who do we replace him with?
