mail say fat sam has left crystal palace.
Jason Burt from the Telegraph has confirmed.

Apparently he will retire as well and not look for another role in management.

Think Palace probably told him they weren't going to spend much in the off-season, since they spent a fair bit last season, and Fat Sam didn't want to stay on in those circumstances.

Be interesting to see where Palace go from here really.

Pretty easy choice though, go manage the biggest team in your home country or take a job with a club where they sack the manager every season...
Yeah but the top 3 leagues is where he belongs and what he needs to take the next step. I'm sure he'll win trophies at Porto and get a good future job down the line. But I feel that he could have been another Poch if he stayed in the league and did well with a mid table club. Could have seen him ready for a big job within 1-2 seasons

Full statement from Allardyce:

"In some ways, this has been a very difficult decision to make but in others it has been a simple one.

"I will always be grateful to Crystal Palace and Steve Parish for giving me the opportunity to go out with my head held high having helped keep the club in the Premier League.

"More than that, they gave me a chance of rebuilding my reputation after what happened with England. I felt I needed another shot at being a Premier League manager and showing that I still had the ability to achieve something significant. As I said last weekend, Palace gave me the chance of rehabilitation.

"That's why it's hard walking away now. I believe the club are heading in the right direction with a hugely supportive board of directors, a great squad of players and some of the most passionate fans I've ever met.

"But there comes a time when you have to take stock of what direction you want your life to take - and that's been the simple part for me.

"I want to be able to savour life while I'm still relatively young and when I'm still relatively healthy, even if I'm beginning to feel all my 62 years.

"While I've got the energy, I want to travel and also spend more time with my family and grandchildren without the huge pressure that comes with being a football manager. I owe that to my wife and family.

"This is the right time for me, I know that in my heart. I have no ambitions to take another job, I simply want to be able to enjoy all the things you cannot really enjoy with the 24/7 demands of managing any football club, let alone one in the Premier League.

"Steve Parish has been superb during our conversations today. I know it came as a shock to him that I would walk away but our discussions have been incredibly civilised with no recriminations and no fall-out.

"This is not about transfer targets, club finances or anything along those lines. This is me taking the decision I believe is right for my family and myself.

"I would like to thank everybody for their messages of support since the news broke. I've no doubt I will miss management but I certainly have no regrets at this decision. It's been a privilege to have worked for them for the past five months."

Both paths could work out for him - success at Porto could lead to a plum Spanish job, say for example if Zidane has a run of poor results at some stage...

If he does well at Porto, he'll be in demand anywhere really.

Thought Southampton might have been where he would have gone if he stayed in England though.

It's not as though Kewell killed them though. I don't remember the transfer at the time but was it a big deal then?

I was 12 when that transfer went through so we're in the same boat but I know a Leeds fan and the he said considering 'Arry was a player when their two fans got stabbed you'd think that sort of thing would and what everyone at Leeds went through over it would override wanting a bigger payday. Apparently not.

Am shocked with Big Sam's departure from palace.

Hope he sticks with his "retirement" plans and doesn't turn up at a team in trouble come Christmas time.

Hats off to him for keeping us up though. Don't know where we will go from here.........

That seems like a very honourable statement from fat Sam. I'd have no problem with it if I were a Palace fan. If he breaks his word though (and lets face it this is Allardyce we are talking about) then I'd be pretty livid.

Sounds like he wants a break at the very least. Palace probably gave him a nice footnote to potentially end his career on after the England debacle.

Personally I reckon he'll make a return one day but time will tell. For now, probably will try his hand at baking pies or making gum.
