Neeld is exactly what happens when a club doesn't do its due diligence. They sacked Bailey because the board were under the impression they had a squad capable of playing finals. Neeld even repeated the message. All of a sudden after a horrible start to last season, all of a sudden the 'we need to rebuild' line was wheeled out. So like most people I was WTF? Neeld clearly has no support from the playing group, they look like they don't give a shit and worse playing like it. I think he should either resign or be sacked come 9am Monday morning. He sold the big one at his employment presentation yet the board seem to be two gutless to do anything.

Viney should be given the opportunity.
What was wrong with Neale Daniher?

Oh, and Grant Thomas should be the one to coach Melbourne. He's shown at St. Kilda that he knows how to build a club culture.

He'll be sacked tomorrow, one would imagine.

When was the last time an outsider was brought in to coach out a season? Reason I ask is, Choco Williams seems like the perfect candidate to take over the reigns (and I'm guessing he'd be willing to take it on). It's not going to take 11 weeks for the board to reach this conclusion - but I can't remember the last time a coach was hired before the year was out..

Neil Craig did pretty well at Adelaide as caretaker so I'd assume he'll coach out the year. Choco in for 2014.

No rush if they do pull the trigger, can it get any worse?

No one in their right mind is going to go anywhere near the place unless the get carte blanche authourity to bring in ther own people and start afresh and get a long term deal. The Board need all there ducks in a row before they get to that point.

One of the common criticisms I have read of Neeld is that while he is a good strategist and tactician he's is very poor with people management.

If indeed that is the case, its a savage indictment on the selection panel that they chose him in the first place.

I don't think the Melbourne job would be THAT unappealing really. Sure, for someone like Paul Roos or John Worsfold (two names that have been thrown around) there's absolutely no reason why they'd leave their current employment to take on the mess.. but for someone like Rocket Eade or Choco Williams (my personal favourite) who probably still have the desire there's enough to work with:

- Pillars at both ends of the ground. Hogan will easily make an impact next year, plus Dawes (superb today), Clark, possibly Watts up forward. Howe. Frawley and Garland down back.
- Nate Jones should receive more support from Viney, Toumpas, probably another early pick (Aish?), plus a few smokies like Kent and Taggert in 2014.

I'm not suggesting finals footy is around the corner, but get a coach with a semblance of a game-plan, a bit of self-belief in the players and some wiser decisions at the recruiting table (Pederson? Rodan? Gillies? really Mark?) and the old faithful will start turning up again.

I don't think another no-name assistant will cut it after the Bailey and Neeld failures. Has to be Choco Williams for mine.

True Sylvia Saint, they can't go down the same path. Also I think supporters will then have to realistic that the next coach is not just rebuilding the team but the culture/mindset. So a bit of patience to some unusual tactics/strategies will be needed.

It sounds like he's more suited to the behind the scenes type role. He should be relegated to assistant and have Neil Craig coach out the rest of the season.

Gary Ayres would step up and take the job for minimum wage. Melbourne would still look the other way though.

I thought Neeld was a real douche the way he came in the club with his tough persona but who will replace him when they give him the chop? Another highly rated assistant coach? No experienced coach will go near that train wreck. And the people that keep putting up the names of Roos and Worsfold have go to get off the drugs.

Ling calling for Neeld to be guaranteed the rest of the year. I don't think I've ever seen a dead coach walking get such ardent support from the media. In theory they should be baying for blood but there just seems to be no thrill of the chase for the hounds when it comes to Neeld.

I took it more as Ling saying its crunch time, you either sack him tomorrow or guarantee him the full season.

Obviously I think the endeavour was acceptable enough, otherwise I wouldn't have said so, would I?
< snip >.

Wow, just wow.

I'm lost for words, if supporters are happy with that " endeavour ", then...........................

I ment it more that who ever takes it on is doomed. Melbourne's current problems run much deeper than their coach and getting rid of Neeld is just a way of papering over the cracks.
He has helped those cracks open up, so he needs to take responsibility in some shape or form
