I think a lot of the media realise that Neeld is not the problem here as much as the playing group themselves are.

I think you're talking about a game that happened weeks before today, not the one which just happened. Or the two games which preceded this one, for that matter.

The fact our workrate was so obviously there, while our skills and decision making aren't, can be nobody else's fault except the coaches.

We still have a good solid backline and forward setup, while our midfield continues to be the worst in the competition.

And aside from ball-use, ineffective tackling has been commonplace for many weeks before now. Over and over again in weeks gone by, our tackles have been continuously shaken off because of poor technique, although that's improved since.

It's all too clear now that the only solution is for Neeld to be replaced, along with at least two of our assistant coaches (Royal and Rawlings), perhaps more, as I've often said previously.

They wont get smashed next week. It's their grand final next week, they will actually put some effort in, and only go down by about 30-40 points.

So Neeld will last till at least after the bye.

news just mentioned meeting tomorrow. I think they will announce it before Queens birthday, perfect time for them to start the renewal process if they can bring in a name from outside the club in a caretaker capacity.

Kind of like the Swans did with Barrassi.

I'm sick of people talking about shit like that like it was 'improvement'. We were flogged by 90-100 points for much of last year. We're getting flogged by similar margins again. That is not 'improvement'. That is getting flogged. Constantly.

The fact that we won the 3rd quarter against Hawthorn means ****-all when you only kicked one goal in the first half.

Sack him.

Do you think today's effort levels were acceptable?
I watched a stretch of the second quarter and the ease with which the ball transitioned from defence to attack for Hawthorn was deplorable. I'm sure some Melbourne players try but the fact they weren't able to force one contest (and the fact Hawthorn kicked three goals in a matter of minutes with Melbourne barely laying a finger on the ball) points to a lack of effort. If they were trying the Hawks would win but they would at least be taking some of their shots under pressure.

Seems like he inherited a list that was going nowhere from the outset and will likely have his future coaching aspirations seriously damaged due to rthe inept culture and list he inherited. Despite making positive changes he has been hindered by the toxic internal dealings of the club much like Matt Knights was at the bombers. Hopefully if he goes he is given another chance to coach somewhere else like Knights and succeeds.

Obviously I think the endeavour was acceptable enough, otherwise I wouldn't have said so, would I?

It's our skill level and our decision-making that's deplorable. The fact we keep getting utterly screwed up whenever we go into a zone defence, for instance, is further proof of that. If our decision-making was up to scratch, we wouldn't continually be caught out guarding space while forwards charge through the gaps, for example.

If our tackling technique was right, we wouldn't have logged up such a hideous quantity of ineffective tackles so many weeks before today. If our ball-use was at the level required, we wouldn't turn the ball over umpty-million times a match. And so on.

I never hold back on a chance to bag out the Dees.
But, they were serviceable today.
100 points is a good result for them.

They had a kid Kent, he is a jet, think Neeld keeps him in the VFL and tells him to work hard.
I wonder how many others sit in their VFL thanks to Neeld.

I will say something about Mark Neeld, the bloke has NO idea - I mean ZERO - idea about how to coach a football side and he should be no where near an AFL list.

The Dees weren't too bad today, Jones was GREAT, Dawes the best forward on the ground, killed it.
So, I will hold back on potting Melbourne, as I have done all week.
I think they need to get a coach in, Neeld is useless.

No, he's getting a paid a lot of money to do a job only a small group of people in the history of the country get the chance to do. And when he's sacked he will get a slightly less paying assistant role at another club and probably live happily ever after.

If I wanted to feel sorry for people I'm sure there are others out there who deserve my pity a lot more.

Kent played Round's 6 and 7, averaged 3.5 touches in 6 quarters. He went back to the 2's for a few weeks, and played very well today.

100 points is never a good result.

Sacking the coach and installing a caretaker is still the best move they have before October. Re-energizing the club with a caretaker could convince want-away players to stay and some battling performances at the end of the year might get the club a better commercial draw next year.
Letting this go on every week for the rest of the year is nonsensical. There is just no clear or obvious proof that the guy was a good hiring or worth persisting with. The club is already down to the diehards. Nobody is jumping off because Neeld gets sacked.

I'm not going to argue that it won't happen, and soon - because the club will want to be seen as doing something rather than just keep bleeding out every week to the tune of 100 points, but whoever they get in mid-season is unlikely to get this list performing any better than their predecessor without some really long and carefully considered strategic changes.

He'll be sacked tomorrow, one would imagine.

When was the last time an outsider was brought in to coach out a season? Reason I ask is, Choco Williams seems like the perfect candidate to take over the reigns (and I'm guessing he'd be willing to take it on). It's not going to take 11 weeks for the board to reach this conclusion - but I can't remember the last time a coach was hired before the year was out..

Neil Craig did pretty well at Adelaide as caretaker so I'd assume he'll coach out the year. Choco in for 2014.

LOL... toxic internal dealings... like what, being given a lucrative contract extension?

Why would bother at this stage? Who would you get as caretaker? Craig, Viney and Rawlings are already there, aren't they part of the problem?

Neeld is exactly what happens when a club doesn't do its due diligence. They sacked Bailey because the board were under the impression they had a squad capable of playing finals. Neeld even repeated the message. All of a sudden after a horrible start to last season, all of a sudden the 'we need to rebuild' line was wheeled out. So like most people I was WTF? Neeld clearly has no support from the playing group, they look like they don't give a shit and worse playing like it. I think he should either resign or be sacked come 9am Monday morning. He sold the big one at his employment presentation yet the board seem to be too gutless to do anything.

Viney should be given the opportunity.
