Yeah, that bizarre stuff about Toumpas has been going on within the MB for quite some time now, of course. Always nice to see someone from outside our club who's also prepared to push back against militantly asinine nonsense of that kind when it happens with some of our young players, as it so often does.

The idea that you can just declare a player to be somehow a 'bust' after less than half a dozen games is the height of absurdity, but all too common on BF, and certainly not just with Melbourne players, of course.

Well Toumpas reminds me of Sidebottom a bit. Who would probably struggle now to have the same impact at Melbourne as he does at Collingwood, let alone a first year version.

Still, I'm not sure why Neeld plays him when he's clearly not ready. What happened to Tom Couch?

Jamar, Watts, Frawley, Garland, Davey, Bail, Blease, Grimes, Sylvia, Jones and that's just off the top of my head. That's nearly half your current best 22 right there.

His losing margins this year are 79, 148, 94, 28, 61, 60, 34, 90, 95, and 83 points, with an average of just over 77. If he stays all season he'll set some sort of record. FMD, what does he have to do to get sacked?

In his defense, this is what tanking can do to a club. You can't just turn performance off and on at the elite level - it takes extraordinary effort by a club just to maintain elite performance, let alone improve it, and and soon as players get a sniff that performance isn't important it can do long term damage.

Out of those players, how many played in the games we supposedly tanked in?

Blease had issues with a broken leg for the better part of three years, didn't play until 2011.
Bail played in one game in 2009 against north Melbourne, and had one kick before injuring himself
Frawley and Jamar made AA the following year I agree they've gone backwards but I don't think it's due to events in 2009.
Sylvia has been a selfish frontrunner since day one.
Don't think I need to say much for Jones.
Grimes has had plenty of injury but is a solid contributor to the club.
Davey has had injuries dog him around that time and hasn't looked the same player since.
Watts has been poorly coached, mismanaged as a player and lacks mongrel. In my opinion he's the worst developed player in the league.

My point is that this idea that 'tanking' is the major factor as to why Melbourne are still struggling is a pretty naive one. I find it far more likely that the players have been mismanaged by two coaching departments over a long period of time who didn't have the tools or know-how to get the list to play AFL standard football. Let alone their own brands of football.

Couch is on the rookie list and is a very very solid vfl player but from every stint in the AFL he's shown (to be fair it's like four games) leaves me thinking he just doesn't have the talent required.

He's only getting games for marketing. Not bashing down the door based on Casey form and not playing well enough to justify playing at AFL level.

Look at Nathan Hrovat; played two games with an average disposal count of 16, average clearances of 4 and average tackles of 3.5. This is a player that is just as young and taken later in the draft.

I'd say the only reason he's getting games is because in our best 22 about eight or so players on our list who don't deserve a spot based on any form, but no one in VFL deserves to take it from them. So we have this constant rotation of four players coming in and going out of the side because they're not good enough, but the ones we bring in aren't good enough so we bring in the ones we just dropped because they weren't good enough. It's maddening.

Fair enough I guess, especially if he's on the rookie list and hasn't been elevated. But Couch and Magner ran riot on our VFL team on the weekend.

If 40 odd possession performances won't convince Neeld that they deserve a game ahead of spuds like McKenzie or kids like Toumpas, I wonder what on earth do they actually need to do.

Agreed it's a mexican stand off, no one wants to be there but the $$$ involved means he has to stick until he gets knifed or they negotiate a settlement. Based upon what has been reported the Board can't do anything until Peter Jackson goes to the Commission next week to get approval for his plan - whatever that is.

I went to the game today and to say the least i wasn't impressed. There was no atmosphere it was boring and felt like a waste of time. Melbourne players can "play" a lot of these guys were the best in the TAC cup and now the worst in the AFL.

Structures.

Collingwood were able to just move up and down the ground without any resistance. Melbourne players are surely generally fit and have the ability to chase and tackle. But it was non existent. They had no idea what to do and were just drawn towards the ball instead of zoning of into space.

Neeld has to go. Im sorry but he just doesn't have the ability.


Collingwoods backline at one stage was

Seedsman (18 games) Ben Sinclair (29) Kyle Martin (3 games)
Shaw, Reid , Marley Williams (7 games)
And Melbourne were lucky to score 39. Yes they were killed in the midfield but Collingwood have a very very weak side out with Oxley, Thomas, Kennedy, Martin with barely any experience between them and took care of Melbourne without any fuss.

Players have gone backwards for Melbourne.

Neeld shouldn't be making excuses for these players he is saying its "OK" to play like this. It feels like a win for Melbourne if they stop a team beating them by 100. Its pathetic and they need to change.
