I feel sorry for Neeld more than anything. Whilst I appreciate that the board can't exactly come out and say "yeah we're looking at alternatives" - it must have been ridiculously tough for him to come out with these constant messages of enjoying the board's full support one week then suddenly getting shafted.
Obviously his record was very poor, but this decision reeks of scapegoat.

I'm sure the payout will make him feel better. Not that he deserves any of it based on performance. Anyone who feels sorry for him has gotta be joking. He failed plain and simple.

If Craig doesn't at least pull off a win by round 19 (versus Western Sydney) will he be given the arse as well? I hope for Melbourne's sake they can get a win on the board against someone. It's not a pleasant experience watching a side go down the toilet like this.

So Melbourne ask for 5 mill from the AFL, use $600k to get rid of Neeld, another $200k-$300k for new assistant coaches (depending on contract status) and then another $3-$5 million on Roos (depending on the length of the contract, but he would surely be on $1 mill/year).

I wonder how much money Melbourne will be asking for next year .........:p

If i was Neeld, I dont even get why he would give a shit.. getting paid 600k to get out of jail! It is amazing just how much money is floating around in the AFL and to think a club like Melbourne that has as much money as Zimbabwe can afford to sack a coach knowing it will cost them 600k, When nothing is really going to change whether its *insert name of best coach here* coaching or Danny Frawley coaching...

Actually, They should get a panel of senior coaches... Danny Frawley, Damian Drum and Tony Shaw! and Terry Wallace as the CEO

Take the money and relax Neeld. Bloke may have made some errors, but he never really stood a chance.
Yep, anybody thinking the failings at Melbourne are all down to him is so, so wrong. The culture is stuffed and he was on a hiding to nothing.
The guy is probably better off getting a nice big payout and can take up a position as assistant somewhere next year which by all reports he is very good at.

For the love of god Melbourne, DO NOT let Gary Lyon be involved in the hiring of the new coach again under any circumstances.

Best coach you'd had for 30 years.

Not sure why people are feeling sorry for Neeld.

He gets $600k+ and he gets relieved of his duties.

Nobody liked getting sacked from a job they love and put all their hard work into.

He will be hurting, regardless of his contract payout

So that means you are either picking the wrong players or not developing them properly or not getting the most out of them. The coach has been sacked 3 times now, so I am assuming it is one of the first two, probably both.

Mark Williams would be a good coach for Melbourne for 5 years.

Yes, or Worsfold or Roos. They must appoint a senior coach with years of experience or they are done for.

Seems strange to do this now. Why this week and not two weeks ago? Or were they waiting on confirmation from the AFL that they will subsidise Neeld's exit fee before going through with it?

Will Garry Lyon appoint the new coach?

He'll appoint himself coach and then deny all responsibility for the clubs performances, while sinking the boots into the Dogs at every turn....

Absoluteluy disgraceful and disgusting decision by the Demons. They wonder why they have been poor for so long and it is the raft of rash short term decisions such as these. There have been other cancers at the club such as Schwab (others behind the scene such as Lyon) that have damaged the club and the ability for Neeld to function effectively.

I feel ssorry for Neeld as the shit loser culture at Melbourne has wrecked his coaching career and ability due to the long standing dysfunctional programs at Melbourne well before he was appointed. This reminds me exactly of Wayne Brittain and Carlton. It is no wonder Melbourne are an absolute joke. I hope they fail for longer and realise that there are others at the club who need to either put up or shut up as they are causing the problems like David Schwarz and Garry Lyon. The club has little to no integrity at the moment.

Don't deny our club is a joke but so is this post. Can people stop thinking Neeld has been hard done by!

Everyone's known since R1 this season that Neeld is dead man walking, whether it was now or seasons end. However, given our current performances how can anything other than drastic action be taken? Thrashings for 18 months without a glimmer of hope. Fans are walking away in droves and who can blame. There needs to be a change even if there is no affect. Can't tolerate this all seasons otherwise there will be a mass exodus of players and members.

Your post is purely vitriolic and has no point other than to sink to the boots further into our club.

<tinfoilhat>It's an AFL plot to screw St Kilda, they waited until we were playing them</tinfoilhat>

You have to feel for Melbourne supporters. They finally get a week free from football and its associated bad news but still it keeps following them around.

Neil Craig, if he is interim coach (contrary to the Roos rumours that are flying around on SEN), and he wins 6 or 7 games to the end of the year... will they be forced to give him the job?

It's an interesting question to ponder, but I don't think it's anyone's really going to have to answer it

True... but it's always the risk with an interim coach. What if they have to keep him?

Similarly, why appoint a coach if he's a 0% chance of becoming the senior coach?

Sorry but people at the club for long periods off time had been questioning the impulsive decisions to sack coaches in the past when they were really not underperforming and secondly when the back room men were having a toxic influence on the club. Danaher who is probably your best coach in the last 30 years was sacked for missing finals. Bailey was sacked on the back of his poor seasons when you were tanking and then makes the list improve drastically yet still goes. If Neeld was a dead man walking at the start of the year then what was the point? Neeld is not responsible for the fact that you have a unch of carless players on your list who are there for money and nothing else and secondly that all your best players are wanting to leave to either expansion clubs or free agency. There is much more going on at Melbourne than Neeld is responsible for.
